Cryptocurrency Cold Storage? A Beginners Guide (2020)

Ledger hardware wallets

I've been seeing a lot of posts about people getting Ledger hardware wallets and I just wanted to understand what they do and how they help.
Looking at their website, there's the Nano X with battery and bluetooth and the Nano S that is just a USB device.
Does it just make a new wallet and store the private key(s) on the device? Is there a way to retrieve the private key(s) other than the "24 words" thing?
I also see there's an app and the Nano X has bluetooth. Can you send/receive from the Nano X by itself? Do you need to have the Nano X with you and connected to the app to send/receive from there?
It sounds like the S is cold storage and the X is used as or with an active wallet, is that right? Is there other things eitheboth of these can do to benefit a Bitcoin owner? I see there are other applications you can install to the devices, but they seem to mainly be other currencies, I only hold BTC and don't have any intention of branching out right now.
Thanks for helping me understand these tools!

Choosing The Best Multi-Currency Wallet For Crypto in 2020

Crypto differs from fiat in terms of storage. It is saved not in some kind of virtual bank, but directly in the blockchain. The coins, information on the distribution of digital assets between users, transaction history – all this data is stored by the chain. Such data cannot be changed or erased in any way. And without a crypto wallet, you cannot manage your assets.

Let’s have a look at different types of crypto wallets.

A cryptocurrency wallet stores your “private” and “public” keys used to send and receive various crypto tokens. The interface and design of the programs help users to get all the necessary information about their digital savings.
There are two types of wallets:

How do cryptocurrency wallets work?

Cryptocurrency wallets are not designed to actually store digital assets; instead, they provide the tools necessary to interact with the blockchain network. The wallet includes a public address, which is an identifier in the form of a set of letters and numbers. This address is a kind of location on the blockchain where you can send coins. You can share your public address with another user to receive funds, but you should never show your private key to anyone.
A private key provides access to your cryptocurrencies, regardless of which wallet you use. Thus, even if your computer or smartphone was compromised, you can still access your funds from any other device, provided that you have the appropriate private key (or seed phrase).

Types of wallets

Web wallet

This type of wallet is suitable for beginners, since it does not require the purchase of devices, software installation, or downloading the blockchain. It is enough for the user to register on the site. Web wallets are simple and convenient to use, they do not take up space on the HDD and are constantly synchronized with the blockchain network, even when your computer is offline.
Cryptopay enables customers to transfer money directly between their Cryptopay wallet and SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) bank account, store their funds safely in a multi-coin portfolio, protected by two-factor authentication to increase security.
Coinbase is a trading service that many retailers use to receive digital currencies from sales. Private keys are stored on the server, and client funds are stored on a cold wallet. You can enable two-factor authentication and install the smartphone app.

Desktop wallet

The local wallet is installed on the hard drive and loaded with the operating system. Such wallets are divided into “thick” (full-node clients) and “thin” (light-node clients). Thick ones can take up to hundreds of gigabytes of hard drive space. Thin local wallet is actually a program that makes requests to the blockchain through a trusted site.
Bitcoin Core is a Bitcoin wallet created by the Bitcoin Foundation. If you want to get a truly secure place for your digital assets, choose this thick desktop wallet.
Exodus is a universal thin crypto wallet. It supports 100+ altcoins and has a built-in exchange service. Also, Exodus can interact with the Trezor Crypto Hardware Wallet.

Mobile phone and browser wallets

Mobile wallets are available through special applications. You can use them for shopping in real stores where crypto is accepted – just like ApplePay.
Benefits of Mobile Wallets:
Disadvantages of mobile wallets:
Coinomi is a multi-currency application with two integrated exchange services (Shapeshift and Changelly). The wallet supports 100+ virtual coins, the keys are stored exclusively in the application.
Browser wallet is an extension for Chrome and Opera browsers. It is very easy to use: you just enter seed phrases and get access to the savings.
The Jaxx extension for Chrome from the team of developers of the browser wallet KryptoKit, supports not only Bitcoin, but Ethereum as well.

Hardware wallet

This is the most reliable option for saving virtual assets. They look like ordinary USB flash drives. The user inserts a USB, logs on a wallet program by entering a password and thus gets access to the funds. All operations are performed not in the system, but directly on the flash drive itself, which eliminates extraneous access to data.
Trezor wallet supports most of the top coins, it can be synchronized with the MyEtherWallet online wallet, as well as Chrome and Firefox browsers to get access to crypto funds.
Ledger Nano S is miniature, safe, and easy to use and has several levels of protection. Asset management is performed through the Ledger Manager utility.

Paper wallet

A paper wallet is a piece of paper that usually has QR codes that can be quickly scanned to get the address to a crypto account. The main advantage of services like BitAddress and Bitcoin Paper Wallet is that the keys are actually stored offline, which makes them immune to hacker attacks. The main drawback, however, is that the paper wallet can be stolen or lost.

Which wallet is the safest?

An offline crypto wallet is the most reliable one. You can install a local wallet on a PC that is not connected to the Internet and store your digital assets on it, but this is not very convenient if you need to quickly complete a transaction.

Conclusion

The choice depends on how you plan to use your tokens. Small amounts of crypto can be stored on thin local or Internet wallets, and for long-term storage of large amounts, it is better to get thick or hardware wallets. In any case, remember to strictly observe all security measures.

Your Guide to Cryptocurrency Wallets

Your Guide to Cryptocurrency Wallets

In order to use cryptocurrencies, a potential user must have a cryptocurrency wallet. But what is a cryptocurrency wallet? What role does it play in securing your cryptocurrencies?
A cryptocurrency wallet, to put it simply, is a digital medium used to buy, send, receive and spend digital currencies, such as Bitcoin and any other supported altcoins or tokens. Users can view their cryptocurrency balances and make transactions using a cryptocurrency wallet.
How Does it Work?
Note that since cryptocurrencies are virtual currencies that runs on the blockchain, wallets are created not to contain or store cryptocurrencies but to act as a medium for the user to interact within the blockchain. A wallet generates and holds both private and public keys that allows users to access their cryptocurrencies conveniently.
Confused?
Imagine a vault. Storage vault helps secure things conveniently and securely. The same goes for a cryptocurrency wallet. It acts as a storage of both private and public keys, which are needed for any cryptocurrency transactions.
Each wallet gives its users a unique account number more popularly known as a wallet address. A public key is used to generate a unique wallet address. Wallet addresses are simplified versions of public keys and a combination of randomly generated upper and lowercase letters, and numbers. Just like normal bank accounts, a wallet address can be shared with other people to receive cryptocurrencies.
Sample of a BTC Address:
1A1zP1eP5QGefi2DMPTfTL5SLmv7DivfNa
Private keys, on the other hand, serves as the password or verification code of the user’s cryptocurrency transactions. It gives users access to the actual funds they have on the blockchain. Unlike public keys which can be shared publicly, private keys MUST ALWAYS be kept safely by the user. So, if the user unlucky losses his public key or address, it can always be retrieved given that he still has the private key.
Cryptocurrency wallets let users view their existing balances and move cryptocurrency funds (such as buying and selling cryptocurrencies) on the blockchain system using these keys. A public key is only tied to one private key, meaning only the user can verify the transactions within his or her wallet.
Types of Cryptocurrency Wallet
Wallets can be classified into two categories: hot wallets and cold wallets. A hot wallet is a wallet connected to the internet while cold wallets are not. Under these categories are various cryptocurrency wallet types, namely, paper wallets, hardware wallets, and software wallets.
Selecting a specific type of wallet depends on the needs of each individual as every wallet has different functions and features. Some wallets are made for only a single cryptocurrency, while some offer more than one coin or altcoins.
Paper Wallets
Paper wallets are cold wallets wherein public and private keys are printed out in a sheet of paper (usually in a QR code form). This is not connected to any servers, and the only way to access it is to enter the key into any software wallet or scan the QR code. Open source services are available online to create the keys locally on your computer or device. This means that the data is not sent over the internet, leaving it safe and secure (considering that your device is virus-free and malware-free). Since these wallets are printed out, users must keep it carefully to avoid any theft by losing it.
Hardware Wallets
Hardware wallets are dedicated electronic devices (like USB) that stores a user’s private and public keys. It uses a Random Number Generator (RNG) to generate public and private keys. Users need to plug-in their device in any computer or laptop with an installed program that lets users do transactions.
Software Wallets
This kind of wallet comes in three different forms, namely, web, desktop, and mobile wallets. The similarity with these forms is they are all connected to the internet.
Web Wallet
Web wallets allow users to access blockchains through the use of any web browser without installing anything. Though they are more convenient to access, it can be vulnerable to hacking attacks and theft.
Desktop Wallet
Desktop wallets are downloaded and installed on a specific computer or laptop. It gives users full control over their keys and funds. Ensuring that the computer is free from any viruses or malware before and during the wallet is installed helps remove the possibility of any malicious hacking attempts.
It is important to regularly backup the desktop wallet and private keys in order to access this wallet in case the computer or laptop in which the wallet is installed malfunctioned.
Mobile Wallet
Like its desktop counterpart, a mobile wallet runs in a smartphone using a mobile application. These are considered more convenient than the desktop wallet as it can technically be used anywhere and everywhere with the use of the mobile phone.
Most of the coins or tokens available in the market have their own wallet. In the case of Swipe Token (SXP), it has its very own Swipe Wallet app which runs on the Ethereum blockchain. The Swipe Wallet application supports multiple types of cryptocurrencies where users can buy, send, and spend it instantly within the app.
Having a cryptocurrency wallet is an essential part of managing cryptocurrency funds. By using a wallet, users can easily send and receive cryptocurrency funds. On which kind of wallet is safe to use, it really depends on the needs of each individual. Each type of wallet has a unique function which is why it is important to identify your needs before getting a specific type of wallet.

What Is Bitcoin Private Key: Beginner’s Guide

What Is Bitcoin Private Key: Beginner’s Guide
Most of the people in this sub probably already know what the Bitcoin private key is and how it works, but there are many newcomers who do not fully understand all the technical aspects of it. I hope you guys will find it useful.

Bitcoin Private Keys: The Basics

Let’s start with some main principles.
  • A private key is functionally similar to a password to your email account. Unlike your email address, you never share it.
  • You need your private key to be able to receive the crypto someone sends you and to have access to your funds.
  • The BTC network does not store your private keys, they are generated and stored by the wallet software. There are different types of wallets.
IMPORTANT: The private key concept does not apply exclusively to Bitcoin. Other cryptocurrencies use it too.
Now, let’s see how a private key looks and works.

Bitcoin Private Key Definition

Bitcoin private key is an alphanumeric piece of code. It includes letters and numbers, just like your public address.
However, while a public address is like your plastic card number, a private key is like your CVC. You know, those secret three digits on the back of a card?
A private address is created in a random manner when you get a cryptocurrency wallet. The possibility of creating two identical private keys is almost zero, due to the sophisticated encryption algorithm, we apply for the purpose.
In the BTC network, a private key contains 256 symbols, as we obtain it using the SHA256 encryption algorithm. This function always returns 256 symbols, no matter the input.

Bitcoin private key in various formats, including WIF.

Wallet Import Format (WIF)

Using such a long string of code is inconvenient, so a private key is often presented in WIF (Wallet Import Format). It’s a shortened version that includes only 51 characters (numbers from 0 to 9 and letters in the range of A-F) and begins with 5.
Here is a Bitcoin private key example in WIF:
5Kb8kLf9zgWQnogidDA76MzPL6TsZZY36hWXMssSzNydYXYB9KF
WIF has a few advantages over a full BTC private key version. As we have said, it’s shorter and more convenient to use. Also, it contains special pieces of code that serve to check the address for typos and correct them automatically.
WIF associates with only one private key and can be easily converted back into it, using an established algorithm.

Encrypting Private Keys

If a key looks like WIF but starts with 6, it is an encrypted version of a private key. People encrypt keys to ensure an extra layer of protection. To obtain such a string of code, we apply another algorithm. To decode (decrypt) the key we need to enter the password that we set when we were encrypting it.

How Bitcoin Private Key Works

You probably know Bitcoin as a digital payment system. To explain how it works, it would be better to compare it to a web-messenger, with massages transferring value. These ‘value messages’ are BTC transactions.
And what role a private key plays in sending these financial messages?
Let’s take a look at a real-life example.

https://preview.redd.it/fgtn8h63veu41.png?width=1261&format=png&auto=webp&s=9855f9aba70ebe7ca1f02b32c160ae78b2b42400

Using Private And Public Keys For a Transaction

Imagine you are sending 1 BTC to your friend Bill. You create a transaction and indicate yourself as the sender and Bill as the receiver of this amount. Then, you will broadcast the transaction to make the Bitcoin network aware of it.
  1. You start by choosing a private key. Using a special encryption algorithm, you derive a public key from it. You send this public key to Bill.
  2. You create a message for Bill and sign it with your digital signature. To obtain it, you pass your private key through a special encryption algorithm and attach the resulting code to the message. Every signature is unique, and you can use the same private address to produce an infinite number of them.
  3. Bill receives your message, public key, and signature and passes it through a signature algorithm. If it’s the message you sent, the algorithm returns ok.
Why we need a digital signature in the first place? There are three reasons. First, it tells the recipient that the message is from the sender he knows. Second, a digital signature makes it impossible for the sender to deny he sent the message. Third, it confirms that no one has altered the message in transit.
Unlike a traditional signature, a digital one cannot be forged. To produce it, you have to possess a secret private key.

Why Keeping Your Private Key Secret Is Important

As we have mentioned, anyone in possession of your private key can steal your funds anytime.
If your wicked colleague Alice gets your private key (because you carelessly left your paper wallet on your desk), she can use it to create a digital signature. She can then use that signature to sign a transaction that will look like yours for the network. For instance, Alice can send all your crypto to another address. You will never be able to cancel this transaction and you are highly unlikely to know that she made it.
For this reason, you should be very careful with your private keys. Never send it to anyone using a messenger, or an email client, or a social media channel. Don’t share photographs of your private key. Never store a private key in a Google Doc file.
Please note that some desktop wallet apps store your private key in a standard directory on your hard drive. This place is a honeypot for hackers who know you are a cryptocurrency user. That’s why it’s extremely important to have up-to-date anti-virus software installed on your device.
https://preview.redd.it/bg2zd50aveu41.png?width=723&format=png&auto=webp&s=0e692f5c73c7c68ea854342b7fbeaf6aaa62f71f
Also, you may encrypt this wallet file to make it immune to malware. Many wallet apps provide this option. You will have to set a password to decrypt the private key, and the hacker will have to break this password to do it. If the password is strong, it will be a really difficult and time-consuming task.

Where To Store Private Keys: Mobile, Desktop And Hardware Wallets

As we have mentioned, the Bitcoin network does not store these keys. Instead, wallet services do it.

Mobile Wallets

Some of them allow you to keep and protect your private key, others do it automatically, applying various safety measures like 2FA or encryption. Note that nobody is responsible for it, your bitcoins will be gone if the service is hacked.

Desktop Wallets

Desktop wallets may be a good option. They provide a BTC public and private keys in the format of a file that you can download and import. You can protect this file with a strong password and safely store it on a hard drive. Don’t forget about safe storage for this drive, too. For instance, use a bank vault for this purpose.

Cold (Hardware) Wallets

Hardware wallets are the safest ones. They are small USB devices designed to store your funds and private keys offline, away from anyone who could steal them. For this very reason, hardware (or cold) wallets are impossible to hack. If you accidentally lose, damage or destroy such a device, you can recover your BTC and private keys using a backup phrase. The best-selling models of hardware wallets are Tresor and Ledger Nano S, supporting several popular coins.

Paper Wallets

These wallets are sheets of paper with BTC private keys and public address printed on them. Paper wallets look pretty basic and not very innovational, but it’s a safe way to store your BTC-related sensitive data. The main reason is that they are not connected to the Internet and thus are unreachable for malware attacks. This format is also immune to many mishaps that can affect electronic devices. To create a paper wallet you use a special web service like WalletGenerator.

Groestlcoin 6th Anniversary Release

Introduction

Dear Groestlers, it goes without saying that 2020 has been a difficult time for millions of people worldwide. The groestlcoin team would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone our best to everyone coping with the direct and indirect effects of COVID-19. Let it bring out the best in us all and show that collectively, we can conquer anything.
The centralised banks and our national governments are facing unprecedented times with interest rates worldwide dropping to record lows in places. Rest assured that this can only strengthen the fundamentals of all decentralised cryptocurrencies and the vision that was seeded with Satoshi's Bitcoin whitepaper over 10 years ago. Despite everything that has been thrown at us this year, the show must go on and the team will still progress and advance to continue the momentum that we have developed over the past 6 years.
In addition to this, we'd like to remind you all that this is Groestlcoin's 6th Birthday release! In terms of price there have been some crazy highs and lows over the years (with highs of around $2.60 and lows of $0.000077!), but in terms of value– Groestlcoin just keeps getting more valuable! In these uncertain times, one thing remains clear – Groestlcoin will keep going and keep innovating regardless. On with what has been worked on and completed over the past few months.

UPDATED - Groestlcoin Core 2.18.2

This is a major release of Groestlcoin Core with many protocol level improvements and code optimizations, featuring the technical equivalent of Bitcoin v0.18.2 but with Groestlcoin-specific patches. On a general level, most of what is new is a new 'Groestlcoin-wallet' tool which is now distributed alongside Groestlcoin Core's other executables.
NOTE: The 'Account' API has been removed from this version which was typically used in some tip bots. Please ensure you check the release notes from 2.17.2 for details on replacing this functionality.

ALL NEW! – HODL GRS Android Wallet

HODL GRS connects directly to the Groestlcoin network using SPV mode and doesn't rely on servers that can be hacked or disabled.
HODL GRS utilizes AES hardware encryption, app sandboxing, and the latest security features to protect users from malware, browser security holes, and even physical theft. Private keys are stored only in the secure enclave of the user's phone, inaccessible to anyone other than the user.
Simplicity and ease-of-use is the core design principle of HODL GRS. A simple recovery phrase (which we call a Backup Recovery Key) is all that is needed to restore the user's wallet if they ever lose or replace their device. HODL GRS is deterministic, which means the user's balance and transaction history can be recovered just from the backup recovery key.

ALL NEW! – GroestlcoinSeed Savior

Groestlcoin Seed Savior is a tool for recovering BIP39 seed phrases.
This tool is meant to help users with recovering a slightly incorrect Groestlcoin mnemonic phrase (AKA backup or seed). You can enter an existing BIP39 mnemonic and get derived addresses in various formats.
To find out if one of the suggested addresses is the right one, you can click on the suggested address to check the address' transaction history on a block explorer.

ALL NEW! – Vanity Search Vanity Address Generator

NOTE: NVidia GPU or any CPU only. AMD graphics cards will not work with this address generator.
VanitySearch is a command-line Segwit-capable vanity Groestlcoin address generator. Add unique flair when you tell people to send Groestlcoin. Alternatively, VanitySearch can be used to generate random addresses offline.
If you're tired of the random, cryptic addresses generated by regular groestlcoin clients, then VanitySearch is the right choice for you to create a more personalized address.
VanitySearch is a groestlcoin address prefix finder. If you want to generate safe private keys, use the -s option to enter your passphrase which will be used for generating a base key as for BIP38 standard (VanitySearch.exe -s "My PassPhrase" FXPref). You can also use VanitySearch.exe -ps "My PassPhrase" which will add a crypto secure seed to your passphrase.
VanitySearch may not compute a good grid size for your GPU, so try different values using -g option in order to get the best performances. If you want to use GPUs and CPUs together, you may have best performances by keeping one CPU core for handling GPU(s)/CPU exchanges (use -t option to set the number of CPU threads).

ALL NEW! – Electrum Personal Server

Groestlcoin Electrum Personal Server aims to make using Electrum Groestlcoin wallet more secure and more private. It makes it easy to connect your Electrum-GRS wallet to your own full node.
It is an implementation of the Electrum-grs server protocol which fulfils the specific need of using the Electrum-grs wallet backed by a full node, but without the heavyweight server backend, for a single user. It allows the user to benefit from all Groestlcoin Core's resource-saving features like pruning, blocks only and disabled txindex. All Electrum-GRS's feature-richness like hardware wallet integration, multi-signature wallets, offline signing, seed recovery phrases, coin control and so on can still be used, but connected only to the user's own full node.
Full node wallets are important in Groestlcoin because they are a big part of what makes the system be trust-less. No longer do people have to trust a financial institution like a bank or PayPal, they can run software on their own computers. If Groestlcoin is digital gold, then a full node wallet is your own personal goldsmith who checks for you that received payments are genuine.
Full node wallets are also important for privacy. Using Electrum-GRS under default configuration requires it to send (hashes of) all your Groestlcoin addresses to some server. That server can then easily spy on your transactions. Full node wallets like Groestlcoin Electrum Personal Server would download the entire blockchain and scan it for the user's own addresses, and therefore don't reveal to anyone else which Groestlcoin addresses they are interested in.
Groestlcoin Electrum Personal Server can also broadcast transactions through Tor which improves privacy by resisting traffic analysis for broadcasted transactions which can link the IP address of the user to the transaction. If enabled this would happen transparently whenever the user simply clicks "Send" on a transaction in Electrum-grs wallet.
Note: Currently Groestlcoin Electrum Personal Server can only accept one connection at a time.

How secure is my plan: I want to generate a long-term cold storage wallet using Ian Colemans tool and regular dice

Hi there!
I have been into Bitcoin for a few years now, but I took a break from the topic and didn't keep up to date with the latest technology. When I was still active, paper wallets were still the hot new stuff!
I do own a Trezor Model T, but I want to be EXTRA paranoid and not trust the hardware wallet to generate a wallet for me. The chances of this are slim, but what if the hardware was modified to generate a wallet that another party has access to?
Now, I want to generate a highly secure long-term cold storage wallet for a relatively large amount of Bitcoin and only rely on myself. I already read quite a bit about the topic, but because of my inexperience I have a hard time understanding just how secure the method really is.
Then I found this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5nejoEGWFw
He generates the mnemonic by rolling dice and putting in the results as entropy into Ian Coleman's tool. From that, I created a plan that currently looks like this:
  1. How do I use the test vectors to validate Ian Colemans tool and where can I find them?
  2. Are regular dice rolls "secure enough" for this in terms of entropy and the guess of somebody guessing it?
  3. Does it make sense to use some more sources of randomness, like keyboard mashing and data from https://www.random.org that I have copied offline?
  4. Can I simply import the generated mnemonic into a hardware wallet like Trezor?
  5. Is the mnemonic (24 words) really enough to restore the wallet or do I need something else?
  6. Are change addresses handled with this or will some spare change be sent to other addresses I (maybe) dont control?
  7. Is there any way somebody could get access to my wallet if I only access it from the Trezor Wallet website and without exporting the private keys anywhere?
Thank you guys for your help, I really appreciate it! :)

How much would you dare to keep in a trezor for cold storage, knowing you would keep it in a safe for 5years?

im thinking of getting a trezor, i would put my btc in it, and put it in a safe, but, can it, like, deteriorate overtime, ie. memory looses the keys or something.
or is it designed more like, put 1btc in it and keep connecting it to a pc couple times a month to make some small payments?

Cold Storage

What Is Cold Storage?
Cold storage is an offline wallet provided for storing bitcoins. With cold storage, is stored on a platform that is not connected to the internet, thereby, protecting the wallet from unauthorized access, cyber hacks, and other vulnerabilities that a system connected to the internet is susceptible to.

Cold Storage Explained

When a checking, savings, account with a traditional bank has been compromised, the bank is able to refund the lost or stolen money back to the account holder. However, if your account or wallet has been compromised and your bitcoins stolen, the owner would be unable to recover his coins. Hence, the need for a safe and secure medium of storage
Stores the private keys of a bitcoin owner. The private key given to any bitcoin user is a unique string of alphanumeric characters required to access the user’s address. The address is the user’s unique ID that is required to make transactions and receive bitcoins from a sender. Two people making a transaction with bitcoin, where one is a seller and the other a buyer, will have to share their addresses with each other in order to complete the transaction. The buyer of the commodity or service sends the required number of bitcoins to the seller’s divulged address as payment, and the verifies the validity of the transaction and confirms that the buyer or sender really has those funds to send. Once the payment has been delivered to the address, the seller or receiver can only access the funds through his or her private key. It is, therefore, imperative for private keys to be kept secure because if stolen, the user’s bitcoins or altcoins could be unlocked and accessed from the address without authorization.

Protection From Theft

Private keys stored on a wallet connected to the internet are vulnerable to network-based theft. These wallets are known as hot wallets. With a hot wallet, all the functions required to complete a transaction are made from a single online device. The wallet generates and stores private keys; digitally signs transactions using private keys; and broadcasts the signed transaction to the network. The problem is that once the signed transactions have been broadcasted online, an attacker crawling the networks may become privy to the private key which was used to sign the transaction.
Cold storage resolves this issue by signing the transaction with the private keys in an offline environment. Any transaction initiated online is temporarily transferred to an offline wallet kept on a device such as a USB, CD, hard drive, paper, or offline computer, where it is then digitally signed before it is transmitted to the online network. Because the private key does not come into contact with a server connected online during the signing process, even if an online hacker comes across the transaction, s/he would not be able to access the private key used for it.
A paper wallet is simply a document that has the public and private keys written on it. The document is printed from the bitcoin paper wallet tool online with an offline printer. The paper wallet or document usually embedded on it so that it can easily be scanned and signed to make a transaction. The drawback to this medium is that if the paper is lost, rendered illegible or destroyed, the user will never be able to access his address where his funds are.
Another form of cold storage is a hardware wallet which uses an offline device or smartcard to generate private keys offline. The Ledger USB Wallet is an example of a hardware wallet that uses a smartcard to secure private keys. The device looks and functions like a USB, and a computer and chrome-based app are required to store the private keys offline. Like a paper wallet, it is essential to store this USB device and smartcard in a safe place, as any damage or loss could terminate access to the user’s bitcoins. Two other popular hardware wallets include TREZOR and KeepKey.
Finally, users looking for cold storage options can also opt for offline software wallets, which are quite similar to hardware wallets but are a more complex process for less technical users. An offline software wallet splits a wallet into two accessible platforms – an offline wallet which contains the private keys and an online wallet which has the public keys stored. The online wallet generates new unsigned transactions and sends the address of the user to the receiver or sender on the other end of the transaction. The unsigned transaction is moved to the offline wallet and signed with the private key. The signed transaction is then moved back to the online wallet which broadcasts it to the network. Because the offline wallet never gets connected to the internet, its stored private keys remain secure. Electrum and Armory are often quoted as the best offline software wallets in the cryptoeconomy.
Cryptocurrency users should ensure that the wallet of their choice is compatible with the coins they transact or trade in, as not all wallets support all cryptocurrencies.

Cold Storage: The Preferred Choice

Cold storage is the preferred storage method for everyone from long-term hodlers and Bitcoin proponents to institutional custody services like Ledger Vault — who holds millions of dollars in funds.Storage through a hardware wallet is the mechanism of choice because of the physical security layer afforded by decoupling the encrypted USB devices from the Internet. Malicious entities would need to have physical access to the device and subsequently bypass numerous protections like passphrases, PINs, and tampering authenticity signatures on the device. Not readily available with fiat currencies. Additionally, cold wallets are improvements over similar non-custodial wallets like software wallets . Despite a crowded field of competition, a few hardware wallet providers have stood out from the crowd — particularly Ledger. Ledger provides several of the most popular hardware devices. Depending on your storage, interface, and cost preferences, both are standards from which other cold wallet products can adequately be compared to give users context on the cold storage wallet market.

Bread Wallet Security

Hey, I have a little over half a bitcoin in a bread wallet at the moment. I've read a little bit about cold storage, paper wallets, etc but still don't know exactly what they are. My understanding is that they are a way of storing your bitcoins physically, correct? I'm just curious if Bread Wallet is the way to go, or if as I acquire more bitcoins it may be a good idea to switch over? Just wanted to get some feedback. Thanks!

[ELI5] How to send coins using Coinb.in

How to send coins from ANY wallet using https://coinb.in/#settings

Why?

Because cold wallets, such as those stored offline in a text file as I keep recommending in my standard advice below:
All you need is a text file to put your wallets in, like this example from https://walletgenerator.net/?currency=Dogecoin
1,"D7WBUpdgLRtG6WyPsqjhaKiJR65X8ZGnkZ","6KieLMW1poAzNVnmLuQZqA262gxEQ51eLGdDK8e2GL2B4LHCKKb" 2,"DM8LT16d49zHr8ByXbUwZb9UBXDGMaZRdc","6Ktgxdv6vN9v2bDHwcJBBb3oMRAgXJumESzBnxaXUSGFZoq6pWQ" 3,"D5UCa51AfxjtVHQ46oYXe2YfkctTeLXPhx","6L2WSPWadRYCwt2L1CxH6zC7PoTYY3KyjxdiUoCqi5eyq6hQKvj"
Use https://coinb.in/#settings to move coins. Download both sites and run them offline. Use https://bitinfocharts.com/dogecoin/ to check balances and transactions. See http://www.mocacinno.com/blog/create-sign-broadcast-transactions-using-coinb/ for coinb.in tutorial. And read the ELI5s (and my history) for more info.
Are without doubt THE SAFEST way to store your coins. Plus, they consume no resources. No bandwidth, no network stress for every node we have, no storage of 20Gb+ blockchains, no weeks of waiting for things to sync, no tearing your hair out and posting desperate pleas for help, and most importantly, no coins irretrievably lost because you or your client screwed up.

What?

Wallets, ALL WALLETS are nothing but numbers. Very large numbers, but fundamentally no different from “7”, “42”, “911” or a phone number. They cannot be created nor destroyed, and you either know them or you don’t. Anyone who knows a key can use it to spend any coins it controls. Anyone who doesn’t know it, can’t. Don’t be the guy who doesn’t know his own keys. Keep them safe. Make copies. Keep those safe. Don’t let your friends, kid brother or random burglar find them, but don’t lose them either.
The only other thing you need for a fully functional wallet is a way to spend coins. Coinb.in is such a way. There are others, such as DogeCoinMultiSig.org which tomcarbon built.
Oh, and you can and should download it and run it locally.

Where?

The default entry point for coinb.in is https://coinb.in/#settings because this settings page is very well hidden. Its in the tiny gear wheel on the Broadcast page.
Looking across the top of the page, you can see
  • + New
  • Verify
  • Sign
  • Broadcast
  • Wallet
  • About
We’re only going to use three of these. New, Sign, Broadcast.
Now, keep in mind that coinb.in is an old Bitcoin tool which tomcarbon added Dogecoin to. Sometimes it thinks its dealing with Bitcoin still, so if you see anything odd, go and make sure you’ve selected Dogecoin in the Settings page.

When?

This tool should be the only place you spend coins. Sure, some clients may look more convenient, but they all suffer from a very big coin-losing flaw. Whenever you split a UTXO, they create a new wallet to send the change to. And they DON’T TELL YOU! This means unless you back up after every transaction, you run a high risk of finding all your coins have ‘disappeared’ from your wallet, and you don’t recognise where they went.
So if you use a client for the convenience as well as a text list of your wallets, you won’t know to add a new wallet to your masterfile. Its best to ditch the clients entirely.

How?

Now we come to the nitty-gritty. Lets use those three wallets above and assume that #1 is the source, #2 the destination and #3 the change wallet. Note that these won’t actually work, as none of them have ever been used, but they will do as examples.
New Transaction
Located at the bottom of the New menu, this will give you a page to enter your wallets and amounts.
In the top field, you enter your source address or Key. If you use the key, it will calculate the address when you click the Load button, which should match what you expected. Note that Load only brings in the first 100 UTXOs. This is so that you can retrieve coins from high-volume wallets which would kill any client. Coinb.in is in fact the ONLY WAY to do this, as even QT falls over around 600 UTXOs.
You will see the total balance that was loaded in the Transaction Fee field. And also in the Inputs tab, where you can go to adjust which UTXOs to spend.
Now you need to add the wallet(s) and amounts to send to them. Lets suppose the source contained a single UTXO for 1,000 Doge. You want to send 500 of them. So you would enter the #2 address in the Address field, and 500 in the Amount field. The Fee now changes to 500, which is not what you want.
So you click the + button to bring up a new line, enter the change address and the other 500, making the fee zero.
And you’re done. Check that the Fee is indeed zero. Check that the amounts shown in the Outputs and Inputs tabs match exactly.

THIS IS CRITICAL!

There is a bug which will send all the coins to the miners if the Outputs exceed the Inputs. I would have expected the Fee to show as negative in such a situation, but it doesn’t. BE WARNED!
Once everything looks right, hit the Submit button.
This will give you a block of hex code. Copy it.
Sign
Go to the Sign tab and paste it. Add your private key for the source wallet and click Submit. Note this can be done offline for safety.
This will give you another block of hex, the SIGNED transaction.
Broadcast
Copy this and paste it in the Broadcast tab and click Submit.
That’s it. Your coins are on their way. Make a cuppa and settle in while they arrive in a minute or three.
Note: All fields retain their values unless you refresh the page! This can be a boon when doing multiple transactions, such as when emptying a huge wallet. But it can also be a trap for the unsuspecting. Refresh or close the window when you’re done.

Who?

Who should use this?
Absolutely EVERYONE!
Even if you’re wedded to your client in some satanic blood-contract, you should still know how this works, because sooner or later you’re going to have a problem you can’t fix without it.
Definitely download the site and store it on every device you have. On every USB backup of your wallets. On your phone (well, except iOS which doesn’t do local HTML), etc, etc, etc.
Oh, and if you’re a programmer SmartyShibe, do consider improving the code over on GitHub.
