What A Day: Stitt Down And Shut Up by Sarah Lazarus & Crooked Media (07/15/20)

"If it’s Goya, it has to be good." - Ivanka Trump, violating federal ethics rules

Bean Here Before

With hospitals filling up and businesses shutting back down across wide swaths of the country, the Trump administration seems to have no pandemic strategy beyond sowing confusion and flogging beans.
Meanwhile, life comes at you fast.
The Trump administration condemned the country to a second surge of infections by refusing to coordinate a national response, leaving even the best state leaders to adopt piecemeal solutions by trial and error. Rather than try a different tack the second time around, Trump has committed to undermining widely trusted health experts and hiding the data that makes even those local decisions possible.

Look No Further Than The Crooked Media

Last week the Adopt a State program sent out our first Call to Action emails, and (without a hint of bias here) Florida crushed it. Team Florida has already raised upwards of $42k to support a Virtual Voter Registration Program—that will help reach 400,000 Floridians, which could cover Trump's margin of victory almost four times over.
We'll be sending each state team new calls to action every week via email, so keep checking your inbox and getting those actions done. And if you haven’t already signed up, head on over to https://votesaveamerica.com/adopt and join the thousands of volunteers looking to flip some swing states.

Under The Radar

The new head of the Postal Service has implemented major operational changes that could slow down mail delivery. Postmaster General and Trump donor Louis DeJoy instructed employees to leave mail behind at distribution centers as needed to avoid delaying mail carriers from completing their routes, a change from postal workers’ traditional mandate to not leave letters behind for the next day. DeJoy cited the agency’s need to cut costs, but the decision could chase away more customers and put the Postal Service in a deeper financial hole. It could also prove disastrous in November, when voters could lose access to mail-in ballots due to slow delivery. The Treasury Department has continued to hold a $10 billion emergency loan hostage until USPS gives in to Trump’s political agenda, and Congress has yet to provide additional funding.

What Else?

President Trump’s lawyers have renewed their efforts to block the release of his tax returns, and now plan to argue that the Manhattan district attorney’s subpoena was too broad and politically motivated. While the Supreme Court slapped down Trump’s first legal claim, it left the door open for him to keep the returns in limbo indefinitely with fake new arguments.
Trump’s also not above straight up ignoring Supreme Court decisions. The administration is still rejecting new DACA applicants, in violation of last month’s ruling.
Some of the most high-profile accounts on Twitter were compromised by bitcoin scammers. Hackers took control of the accounts of Barack Obama, Jeff Bezos, Joe Biden, Elon Musk, Apple, and many more.
The largest U.S. banks have started stockpiling billions of dollars, reflecting their assumption that the recession won’t be easing anytime soon.
Jeff Sessions lost his Alabama Senate primary runoff to Tommy Tuberville, crushed under the presidential boots he never stopped licking Trump’s former physician Dr. Ronny Jackson won his GOP primary runoff for a Texas congressional seat, and Sara Gideon won the Democratic nomination to challenge Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME). In the grander scheme, there are now at least 11 GOP congressional nominees who support QAnon and Republican leaders are quietly backing them.
Gov. Mike Parson (R-MO) said Trump will be “getting involved” in the case of the McCloskeys, the St. Louis couple who pointed guns at Black Lives Matter protesters. Trump passionately defended them on Tuesday, and, in a separate interview, downplayed police violence against Black people and defended the Confederate flag.
Ghislaine Maxwell has a secret husband, according to prosecutors at her bail hearing. Maxwell pleaded not guilty and was denied release on bail.
ViacomCBS cut ties with Nick Cannon over antisemitic comments he made on a podcast.
Kanye West’s presidential campaign to help Donald Trump win re-election has come to end, according to his advisor, though he just made it onto the ballot in Oklahoma, so as with all Kanye news, who the heck knows.
Attn PBS millennials: A Wishbone movie is in development. Our generation has been saddled with two recessions, 9/11, and the worst public health crisis in 100 years, but by god, we still have a Jack Russell Terrier who loves to read.

Be Smarter

Fatal drug overdoses are likely surging during the pandemic. Drug deaths in the U.S. reached record numbers in 2019 after falling the year before, and the pandemic may be worsening the resurgence. A report in May found overdose rates have increased by an average of 20 percent across six states in 2020, and recent drug tests have found a substantial increase in illicit drug use, as well as a geographic spread of fentanyl. Overdoses were increasing before the pandemic, but it’s definitely not helping: Social isolation puts addicts at greater risk, treatment centers have been disrupted, and people who have overdosed are more likely to avoid emergency rooms out of fear of infection.

2018 in Review: A Plateau of Shit

Welcome to my fifth annual Year in Review, in which I chronicle the previous in reddit, circlejerks, and circlebroke. And like the other years, this one was a doozy. So, without further ado, let me present to you...
2018 In Review: A Plateau of Shit
January
The #MeToo movement is still in full swing. The MO for 2018 remains the same, agreeing with anyone who speaks out against the movement and downplaying the actions of people they like.
A redditor takes m’lady out on a date, can’t let go of something minor, and ends up humiliating her in front of the staff. Mods decided that while something bad happened, he didn’t fuck up.
February
Remember Ugandan Knuckles? It was a flavor-of-the-week maymay that was pretty blatantly racist. Redditors decided to shit up /uganda, a place where people once had actual discussions about the country where they lived or visited, with their shitty memes.
Black Panther becomes the first major superhero movie with an all-black cast. Redditors open the racist floodgates, then proceed to get pissy about being accused of being racists.
Did you hear? Daddy Musk launched a car into space. This is such a big deal that reddit has to insult anyone critical of the occasion and also compare his struggle to bitcoin for some reason.
Another mass shooting, another song and dance about how of course guns aren’t the problem, idiot. Only this time, an extra helping of vitriol is directed at teenagers!
March
We did it circlebroke! Racist fake-news mill /uncensorcednews is permabanned!
Survivors of the Parkland shooting organized a nationwide anti-gun march which is like rage-filled catnip for anti-activist and pro-gun redditors.
April
Another Nazi getting punched in the face, another visit from the Volunteer Nazi Safety Brigade.
As a bonus, the events of previous months produced what it probably the cringiest writing prompt ever devised.
May
Rapper Childish Gambino made an music video for the song “This Is America.” It’s not subtle. White redditors dropped by to “well actually” about how it is a critique of black culture.
If only the powers that be listened to redditors, they could have prevented another school shooting, something that redditors know everything about.
In what is becoming a semi-annual occurrence, another swath of gamers pitched a shitfit about women and minorities appearing in their bideo bames. This time, gamers are so fed up after seeing a woman in the trailer for Battlefield V that they wish the Nazis had won WWII
June
CB mods declare Summerbroke. Is that even any different from regular CB?
Happy LGBTQ Pride Month! The World Health Organization removed being transgender as a mental illness. Reddit can’t be having any of that! (WHO also classified “gaming addiction” as a disorder, so there’s a bonus “gamers rise up” jerk in there too).
When virtually every nation on earth condemned the Trump administration’s policy of family separation, reddit chimed in with the usual cold-heartedness and whataboutism.
Some dipshit literally clamped his balls to a car battery and electrocuted himself in order to win a dumb online argument. Reddit has a new hero.
July
The EU was going to ban memes, or something. Reddit did nothing, and then patted themselves on the back once their may-mays were safe.
The founder of KiA scuttled the sub, disgusted at the cesspit of racism and sexism it had become. It took admins less than half an hour to get it up and running.
August
For much of 2017 and 2018, a certain portion of reddit became enamored with Jordan Peterson, a Canadian college professor who said stuff like “There are only two genders” and “All these pronouns aren’t necessary,” but with more words. Perhaps the biggest laff at the expense of Peterson fandom came from redditors who eat nothing but meat because of Peterson.
Certified conspiracy nut Alex Jones got his dangerously stupid and reactionary podcast pull from all the major carriers. Naturally, redditeurs got super mad about it.
The hacker behind 2014’s “The Fappening” scandal was sentenced to prison for his deeds. Queue up “Uptown Funk,” because for a moment it was 2014 again because redditors were back to victim blaming and downplaying the illegal actions.
Reddit’s favorite stand-up comedian, Louis C.K. performed his first stand-up since his #MeToo fall from grace. Time for some revisionist history!
Gamers are still worked up about Battlefield V. One of them calls the Nazis the quote-unquote “bad guys” of WWII
September
Reddit still hates Black Panther
The G in Gamer stands for genocide because a gaming conference held part of an event specifically for women and non-binary people.
More GamerGenocide: A white video game character might have dark skin in the coming TV adaptation. Literal racism.
More tech-bro drama: Linux developers revamp their Code of Conduct. The techbros of /linux can’t possibly be expected to be inclusive and not harass people!
We did it, reddit! An alt-right sub and a hate sub get banned. Later in the month, more shitty subs get quarantined. But what about SRS?
October
Americans of all backgrounds and politics had strong feelings about the Senate confirmation hearing of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. On reddit, the feeling was one of a hard-won victory in the face the ever-present threat of false accusations.
A disciple of Daddy Peterson brought his girlfriend to one of the professor’s lectures and she dumped him. WARNING: Hilarious, but possibly fake.
Gamers are trash, more at 11: While the Trump Administration was busy finding new ways to strip trans* people of their civil rights, a game distribution platform used the resistance hashtag in a cruel, ironic way. Naturally, gamers showed more cruelty and cluelessness in response to the ensuing controversy.
November
Midterm elections happened! When a record number of black women are elected, redditors step in to tell you why that’s a bad thing
Gamers are trash, chapter VIII: Nothing much happened in November because everybody was busy playing Red Dead Redemption 2. When a gAmEr posted a video of him attacking a suffragette and feeding the body to hogs, he got banned from youtube. The RDR sub valiantly came to his defense.
Happy Thanksgiving! If you’re a vegan, you can expect redditors dropping into the vegan sub to lecture you about pushing your “nonsense” on “regular folks”...and then get gilded for it.
Freeze Peach in action: In a victory for edgelord Nazi kids everywhere, some edgelord Nazi kinds giving the Nazi salute in a group photo won’t face any repercussions. Reddit rejoices.
December
Reddit still hates Black Panther.
It’s a tale as old as time: Beloved youtuber-gamer descends into the alt-right rabbit hole, says inexcusable stuff on his podcast, disappears for ten months, makes a crappy video, is welcomed back by the youtuber-gamer-watcher community
Speaking of beloved youtube-gamers, PewDiePie and his fans continue to be garbage.
Analysis
I’ve got some bad news, and some good news.
The bad news: 2018 sucked. Being on reddit in 2018 sucked.
The good news: Being on reddit in 2018 sucked about as much as being on reddit in 2017 sucked.
Things didn’t get noticeably worse this year, plus there wasn’t any large scale drama like Ellen Pao stuff or FPH stuff back in 2015 (my, what a long time ago that was). In 2016 and 2017, reddit became a haven for the alt-right and a nerve center for targeted harassment campaigns. In 2018, more of the same shit was happening, but at more or less the same level we were accustomed to. The Nazis and trolls were still in every nook and cranny, but it seems like they ran out of gamers to indoctrinate or new nooks and crannies to invade. Plus, a few notable cesspools got banned or quarantined. The levels of shit just kinda plateaued. Presently, we stand on a giant plateau of shit. There's shit in every direction, as far as the eye can see. Things could have been better, of course. But things probably could have gone even worse. At least we aren't starting up a mountain of shit.
We survived it.
We got used to it.
You know, like a frog gets used to boiling water.
May we all have a safe, happy, healthy, and sane 2019.

A Penny For Your THOT

New Cryptocurrency Announced at Secret Hacking Conference in Chicago

Associated Press | November 23, 2032 | 11:27 PM | CHICAGO
Several members of the local DEF CON 312 chapter have quietly unveiled the all-new cryptocurrency THOT at this year’s THOTCON, the 23-year-old hacking conference hosted annually at an undisclosed location within the Chicago Metropolitan Area. While THOTCON is traditionally a platform for the exploration of cutting-edge security issues, the timing of the cryptocurrency’s announcement appears to have been heavily influenced by the collapse of the American economy and the continued embargo against the State of Texas. “They’re all interested in financial security,” Nick Percoco, a THOTCON organizer, said when questioned about this year’s attendees. “It’s a little unusual, but with a big recession looming and a potential retaliatory strike from the Union State, I don’t really blame them.” Originally created by a team of students from the McCormick School of Engineering and named in honour of the main Chicago Area Code (THree-One-Two), THOT is already widely (and unofficially) exchanged throughout Northwestern University’s student body. One of the cryptocurrency’s co-founders, Isaac Jacobs, explained during the conference that THOT “is an open source blockchain-based cryptocurrency that prioritizes privacy and decentralization above all else.”
THOT borrows characteristics from existing blockchain platforms such as Monero and Ethereum. Like the former, it uses an obfuscated public ledger that prevents observers from identifying the source, amount, or destination of the transaction and combines this feature with stealth addresses, ring signatures, and a coinjoin scheme to pool currency, adding additional layers of opaqueness for each individual transaction. While THOT is a pure cryptocurrency (unlike Ethereum, which is both distributed computing platform and operating system), it has a 3.5% inflation cap relying on scaling difficulty in proof of work and uses an internal transaction fee system to allocate resources across the network and reduce spam. THOT uses the Data and Intelligence Corporation’s proprietary method of verification, including a Proof of Work mechanism to issue new tokens, incentivizing miners to secure the network and validate transactions while reducing the advantage of specialized ASICs in mining and keeping the currency decentralized.
“Beyond just a tradeable cryptocurrency, THOTs can act as a stake used to insure financial instruments on the blockchain,” Jacobs stated, when asked about the applications of the new monetary device. “For example, self-executing smart contracts will require a certain amount of THOTs to be sent along as crypto tokens to encourage a given transaction’s inclusion by miners in the blockchain. For any corporations that choose to adopt THOT, execution of instruments would instead result in a dividend paid in cryptocurrency to those processing it, founded on the contract's value. THOT would also be used for data royalties, encouraging third parties to adopt a stake in THOT to insure the security and validity of the instrument.” Jacobs was quick to point out that this architecture incentivizes expenditure of THOT to boost the processing of transactions, encouraging circulation of the currency.
THOT is currently the preferred medium of exchange between participants (and is likely to remain so while THOTCON continues), but its wider impact beyond its initial early adopters is undetermined at this time.

U.S. Treasury official: If there is no strong security, cryptocurrency may become a new channel for terrorist organizations to transfer funds. According to Cointelegraph, Sigal Mandelker, deputy minister of terrorism and financial intelligence at the US Treasury, said at the 19th annual International Conference on Counter-Terrorism that terrorist organizations, their supporters and sympathizers are constantly seeking new ways to raise and transfer. Funds are not subject to investigation or tracking by law enforcement agencies. While most terrorist organizations still rely primarily on traditional financial systems and cash transfer funds, cryptocurrencies may become the next area without adequate and strong security.
Libra Association COO: Libra reserves will not exceed 200 billion US dollars at most, and the US dollar is expected to account for half Bertrand Perez, managing director and chief operating officer of the Libra Association, recently refuted the statement that “incorporating French currency into Libra reserves will affect central bank monetary policy”. According to Perez, this is not reasonable, because the reality is that the legal currency policy will affect Libra through a “basket of currencies”, not the other way around. In addition, Perez also said that the maximum Libra reserve will not exceed 200 billion US dollars, this figure seems to be very large, but in the global financial market is actually a “very low” amount, like the US investment management giant BlackRock The management assets of the group (BlackRock) amounted to 6.84 trillion US dollars. Perez also talked about how to deal with a currency crash in the basket: “If there is a currency disaster or crisis before the release of Libra, we can remove it from the basket, but this decision will be two-thirds of the association. The members voted. “Although the association is still deciding how to determine the weight of a basket of currencies, Perez said that the dollar should be very important and is expected to be around half.”
Ethereum 2.0 multi-client test network made new progress: Developer reports 7 client operation confirmation Jonny Rhea, an engineer at ConsenSys’s development team PegaSys, announced on Twitter that Ethereum’s 2.0 client-side operations have been confirmed. Consistency is now achieved by installing the seven clients of the beacon chain and forming the network. The seven clients are: Prysm from Prysmatic Labs, Artemis from PegaSys, Nimbus from Status, Lighthouse from Sigma Prime, Lodestar from Chainsafe, Trinity from Triniy Team, and Harmony from Ether Camp. Ethereum 2.0 is expected to be implemented in 2020 ∼ 2021. The various teams developing the Ethereum 2.0 client have completed the trial network composition as a separate client, but running on multiple clients is still in development. The development team is currently gathering in Boston for on-site verification. On September 12th, Preston Van Loon of Prysmatic Labs also reported on the confirmation of five clients. There are currently 9 clients in Ethereum 2.0. In the operational confirmation of Rhea, Parity and Yeeth are not included. But Parity developer Wei Tang has also reported multi-client operation confirmation for Parity and Lighthouse.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading down marginally at its current price of $10,320, which marks a slight retrace from its daily highs of $10,450.
Ever since BTC bounced from its support level at $10,000, the cryptocurrency has been facing a bout of consolidation after its upwards momentum stalled, which may mean that its bulls do not have enough strength at the moment to push the cryptocurrency higher.

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival to you all !! ✨ May the round moon brings you happiness, health and prosperity.
Germany plans to block private stable currency According to a report by Der Spiegel, a German ruling coalition, the German ruling coalition, is trying to reject projects like Libra. Thomas Heilmann, a member of the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU), said that this month, members of the German government will approve the country’s blockchain strategy, which will “not allow market-related private stable currencies to exist in the country.” At the same time, Thomas Heilmann said that so far, the measures taken by central banks have done a good job in dealing with the crisis and inflation. But once a digital money provider dominates the market, it will be difficult to do so.
Libra Association: Welcome to the review of regulators, policy makers must carefully consider the application of blockchain technology in financial policy In response to the French Finance Minister’s refusal to develop Libra in Europe, the Libra Association told Coindesk that the comments of the French Finance Minister further underlined the importance of our cooperation with regulators and leaders around the world. In the nearly three months since the announcement of the planned Libra project, we have become the most watched financial technology project in the world. We welcome this review and deliberately designed a long-running runway to conduct these conversations, educate stakeholders and incorporate their feedback into our designs. The Libra Association and its members are committed to working with regulatory agencies. We recognize that blockchain is an emerging technology, and policymakers must carefully consider the application of blockchain technology in financial policy.
French Finance Minister: Digital currency needs a common framework, Europe should consider creating a public digital currency French Finance Minister Lemaire said that digital currencies need a common framework and Europe should consider creating a public digital currency. In addition, we should refuse Facebook to develop its cryptocurrency Libra in the EU. Gold mentioned earlier, it also said that Libra increases the risk of abuse of sovereign status, Libra will also bring systemic risks. In the current situation in Europe, the Libra project cannot be allowed to continue.

BTC briefly fell below the $10,000 mark yesterday to date, then rebounded quickly and is now back near $10,200. In the past 24 hours, the net outflow of BTC funds is close to $450 million, and the outflow of funds has decreased compared with the previous cycle. The BTC continued to withdraw at night yesterday and was quickly pulled up after breaking the $10,000 barrier. The air force remained weak, with strong overall support underneath. Yesterday, the day line closed a long shadow line, the day is expected to oscillate upward, the medium-term trend continues to lean towards bulls, but BC has not given a clear direction, the trading needs to pay attention to risk. In terms of operation, the spot can be held continuously, the strategy of replenishing warehouse at a low level should be maintained, and the risk should be avoided.

The Japan Financial Services Agency held the second round of the Encrypted Assets Roundtable, calling Libra the “alarm clock” According to the official website of the Japan Financial Services Agency on September 9, the Japanese Financial Agency revealed today that the agency had held the second round table on encrypted assets in Tokyo on September 6. The meeting brought together relevant financial regulators and international organizations to discuss and exchange experiences on the latest developments in cryptographic assets, including stable currency. The conference consisted of four main topics, namely: 1. The latest technological developments and challenges of cryptographic assets; 2. Supervision of crypto-equity trading platforms; 3. Investor protection and market integrity; 4. Participation of multiple stakeholders global cooperation. It is reported that the meeting is an invitation system and is not open to the public. At the meeting, the Japanese Finance Agency’s international deputy, Iwami, made an opening speech, saying: “Libra is like a ‘sounding alarm clock’ to all of us. The alarm bell has been ringing, which requires regulators and central bank officials to expand. Eyes, face up to the problem to face sooner or later. Many other clocks may be waiting for the next time.”
US Deputy Treasury Secretary: Libra will accept US anti-money laundering review On the 11th, Sigal Mandelker, deputy secretary of the US Treasury for terrorism and financial intelligence, warned on Tuesday that Libra, the proposed cryptocurrency of Facebook (FB.O), must comply with US anti-money laundering standards in order to survive, even if its headquarters is in Switzerland. Mandelker said: “What we have pointed out to them many times is that they must deploy appropriate anti-money laundering and sanctions programs to combat terrorist financing. I think they are still at a very early stage of thinking about how to meet these requirements.”
Indian parliamentarian: cryptocurrency is more complicated than the Internet in the early stages of development Indian Congressman Rajeev Chandrasekhar said in an interview that cryptocurrency is much more complicated in the early stages of its development than the Internet. The growth and innovation momentum of encryption technology is almost like a perfect storm. Speaking of India’s position on managing encryption for the public, he cautioned that the Supreme Court has ruled that privacy is a fundamental right for all Indians. In addition, he added, there is currently no legislative and legal framework for innovation to allow people to collect data from consumers and to allow consumers to agree. He deliberately confused encryption and privacy because it currently does not have a policy framework.

Bitcoin price is slowly declining and recently broke the $10,000 support area against the US Dollar. The price is facing an uphill task and it might continue to struggle near $10,250 and $10,300. There is a major bearish trend line forming with resistance near $10,250 on the hourly chart of the BTC/USD pair (data feed from Kraken). The price could continue to slide as long as it is trading below the $10,400 pivot level in the near term. Bitcoin price is under pressure below $10,250 against the US Dollar. BTC may perhaps accelerate decline as long as there is no close above the $10,400 and $10,500 levels.

2018 in Review: A Plateau of Shit [x-post from /r/circlebroke]

May we all have a safe, happy, healthy, and sane 2019.

morning briefing

Shares of Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) were hit after the close on Tuesday, all falling over 1%, as the DOJ followed Attorney General William Barr's interest in launching a broad antitrust investigation into Big Tech. Much of the rally on U.S. indices has been fueled by the FAANG stocks and a prolonged legal affair - as well as Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) growth worries - could erode some of that sentiment. Nasdaq futures are off by 0.7% on the news, ahead of today's quarterly report from Facebook, and Q2 results from Amazon and Alphabet on Thursday.

Boris Johnson will formally take office this afternoon, unveiling the names of his Cabinet and the team he has tasked with delivering Brexit. Investors are particularly interested to see who will be handed the top jobs such as chancellor of the exchequer, foreign secretary and Brexit minister. Johnson has pledged to negotiate a new Brexit agreemnt with the EU before Oct. 31, but if the bloc refuses, he has promised to leave without a deal on Halloween. The International Monetary Fund cut its global growth outlook yesterday to 3.2% in 2019 and 3.5% in 2020, both down 0.1 percentage points from its April projections. "Dynamism in the global economy is being weighed down by prolonged policy uncertainty as trade tensions remain heightened despite the recent U.S.-China trade truce, technology tensions have erupted threatening global technology supply chains, and the prospects of a no-deal Brexit have increased," the IMF said in a statement. Go Deeper: Review economic performance by country over the past year.
Restructuring costs bite
Deutsche Bank (NYSE:DB) is off 3.5% premarket after reporting a €3.15B loss in the second quarter, due to a large restructuring charge that wiped out what would have been a modest profit. "This decline is mainly due to our decision to exit substantially all of our equities sales and trading business," the bank said in a statement. Deutsche's shares have fallen more than 30% in the last 12 months, hit by a host of scandals relating to historical anti-money laundering failures. Car cuts
A big wave of layoffs is coming to Nissan Motor (OTCPK:NSANY) as the automaker plans 10,000 job cuts globally as part of efforts to turn around its business, Kyodo News reports. The number, which represents around 10% of its global workforce, is much larger than an earlier 4,800 estimate. The announcement will be revealed along with Nissan's Q2 results tomorrow and comes as the automaker struggles to restructure its management team following the arrest of former Chairman Carlos Ghosn.
More auto news
Due to legal risks for diesel-related issues and the cost of replacing Takata (OTCPK:TKTDQ) airbags, Germany's Daimler (OTCPK:DDAIF) said it would intensify cost cuts after reporting a €1.56B loss before interest and taxes in the second quarter. French peer PSA Group (OTCPK:PEUGF) still managed to turn a profit in that period despite a weaker outlook for car sales. Recurring operating income at the maker of Peugeot and Citroen cars rose 10.6% to €3.34B, lifting its operating margin to a new record of 8.7% in January-June. F-35 parts sourcing
Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) is working to establish alternate supply sources for F-35 parts in the U.S. after the Pentagon decided last week to remove Turkey from the fighter jet program. "We have a timeline that we're working towards... it's out through March of 2020 that we think it will all be resolved," CEO Marillyn Hewson said on a conference call. Turkey previously said it planned to buy a total of 100 aircraft over the years, but following President Trump's sanctions, Ankara will not be able to buy the jets.
KKR devours Arnott's
Just weeks after offloading its Kelsen snacks line to Nutella maker Ferrero, Campbell Soup (NYSE:CPB) is selling its Australian snacks unit Arnott's to KKR (NYSE:KKR), in a deal local media reported was worth $2.2B. Food M&A in Australia is getting hot. Last Friday, Anheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE:BUD) agreed to divest its Australian operations - with best-selling labels like VB and Carlton Draught - to Japan's Asahi (OTCPK:ASBRF) for $11B. CPB +1.3% premarket.
Sunday and drone delivery
United Parcel Service (NYSE:UPS) will start delivering packages on Sundays starting in January, following FedEx's (NYSE:FDX) announced move to seven-day delivery as the two work to meet the demands of online shopping. UPS also announced a new drone delivery subsidiary called UPS Flight Forward and said it has applied for FAA certifications needed to expand the business. Those would allow drone flights beyond an operator's visual line of sight, at night and without limit to the number of drones or operators in command. Decred Journal – September 2018

Note: you can read this on GitHub (link), Medium (link) or old Reddit (link).

Development

Final version 1.3.0 of the core software was released bringing all the enhancements reported last month to the rest of the community. The groundwork for SPV (simplified payment verification) is complete, another reduction of fees is being deployed, and performance stepped up once again with a 50% reduction in startup time, 20% increased sync speed and more than 3x faster peer delivery of block headers (a key update for SPV). Decrediton's integrations of SPV and Politeia are open for testing by experienced users. Read the full release notes and get the downloads on GitHub. As always, don't forget to verify signatures.
dcrd: completed several steps towards multipeer downloads, improved introduction to the software in the main README, continued porting cleanups and refactoring from upstream btcd.
Currently in review are initial release of smart fee estimator and a change to UTXO set semantics. The latter is a large and important change that provides simpler handling, and resolves various issues with the previous approach. A lot of testing and careful review is needed so help is welcome.
Educational series for new Decred developers by @matheusd added two episodes: 02 Simnet Setup shows how to automate simnet management with tmux and 03 Miner Reward Invalidation explains block validity rules.
Finally, a pull request template with a list of checks was added to help guide the contributors to dcrd.
dcrwallet: bugfixes and RPC improvements to support desktop and mobile wallets.
Developers are welcome to comment on this idea to derive stakepool keys from the HD wallet seed. This would eliminate the need to backup and restore redeem scripts, thus greatly improving wallet UX. (missed in July issue)
Decrediton: bugfixes, refactoring to make the sync process more robust, new loading animations, design polishing.
Politeia: multiple improvements to the CLI client (security conscious users with more funds at risk might prefer CLI) and security hardening. A feature to deprecate or timeout proposals was identified as necessary for initial release and the work started. A privacy enhancement to not leak metadata of ticket holders was merged.
Android: update from @collins: "Second test release for dcrandroid is out. Major bugs have been fixed since last test. Latest code from SPV sync has been integrated. Once again, bug reports are welcome and issues can be opened on GitHub". Ask in #dev room for the APK to join testing.
A new security page was added that allows one to validate addresses and to sign/verify messages, similar to Decrediton's Security Center. Work on translations is beginning.
Overall the app is quite stable and accepting more testers. Next milestone is getting the test app on the app store.
iOS: the app started accepting testers last week. @macsleven: "the test version of Decred Wallet for iOS is available, we have a link for installing the app but the builds currently require your UDID. Contact either @macsleven or @raedah with your UDID if you would like to help test.".
Nearest goal is to make the app crash free.
Both mobile apps received new design themes.
dcrdata: v3.0 was released for mainnet! Highlights: charts, "merged debits" view, agendas page, Insight API support, side chain tracking, Go 1.11 support with module builds, numerous backend improvements. Full release notes here. This release featured 9 contributors and development lead @chappjc noted: "This collaboration with @raedahgroup on our own block explorer and web API for @decredproject has been super productive.".
Up next is supporting dynamic page widths site wide and deploying new visual blocks home page.
Trezor: proof of concept implementation for Trezor Model T firmware is in the works (previous work was for Model One).
Ticket splitting: updated to use Go modules and added simnet support, several fixes.
docs: beginner's guide overhaul, multiple fixes and cleanups.
decred.org: added 3rd party wallets, removed inactive PoW pools and removed web wallet.
@Richard-Red is building a curated list of Decred-related GitHub repositories.
Welcome to new people contributing for the first time: @klebe, @s_ben, @victorguedes, and PrimeDominus!
Dev activity stats for September: 219 active PRs, 197 commits, 28.7k added and 18.8k deleted lines spread across 6 repositories. Contributions came from 4-10 developers per repository. (chart)

Network

Hashrate: started and ended the month around 75 PH/s, hitting a low of 60.5 and a new high of 110 PH/s. BeePool is again the leader with their share varying between 23-54%, followed by F2Pool 13-30%, Coinmine 4-6% and Luxor 3-5%. As in previous months, there were multiple spikes of unidentified hashrate.
Staking: 30-day average ticket price is 98 DCR (+2.4). The price varied between 95.7 and 101.9 DCR. Locked DCR amount was 3.86-3.96 million DCR, or 45.7-46.5% of the supply.
Nodes: there are 201 public listening nodes and 325 normal nodes per dcred.eu. Version distribution: 5% are v1.4.0(pre) dev builds (+3%), 30% on v1.3.0 (+25%), 42% on v1.2.0 (-20%), 15% on v1.1.2 (-7%), 6% on v1.1.0. More than 76% of nodes run v1.2.0 and higher and therefore support client filters. Data as of Oct 1.

ASICs

Obelisk posted two updates on their mailing list. 70% of Batch 1 units are shipped, an extensive user guide is available, Obelisk Scanner application was released that allows one to automatically update firmware. First firmware update was released and bumped SC1 hashrate by 10-20%, added new pools and fixed multiple bugs. Next update will focus on DCR1. It is worth a special mention that the firmware source code is now open! Let us hope more manufacturers will follow this example.
A few details about Whatsminer surfaced this month. The manufacturer is MicroBT, also known as Bitwei and commonly misspelled as Bitewei. Pangolinminer is a reseller, and the model name is Whatsminer D1.
Bitmain has finally entered Decred ASIC space with their Antminer DR3. Hash rate is 7.8 TH/s while pulling 1410 W, at the price of $673. These specs mean it has the best GH/W and GH/USD of currently sold miners until the Whatsminer or others come out, although its GH/USD of 11.6 already competes with Whatsminer's 10.5. Discussed on Reddit and bitcointalk, unboxing video here.

Integrations

Meet our 17th voting service provider: decredvoting.com. It is operated by @david, has 2% fee and supports ticket splitting. Reddit thread is here.
For a historical note, the first VSP to support ticket splitting was decredbrasil.com:
@matheusd started tests on testnet several months ago. I contacted him so we could integrate with the pool in June this year. We set up the machine in July and bought the first split ticket on mainnet, using the decredbrasil pool, on July 19. It was voted on July 30. After this first vote on mainnet, we opened the tests to selected users (with more technical background) on the pool. In August we opened the tests to everyone, and would call people who want to join to the #ticket_splitting channel, or to our own Slack (in Portuguese, so mostly Brazilian users). We have 28 split tickets already voted, and 16 are live. So little more than 40 split tickets total were bought on decredbrasil pool. (@girino in #pos-voting)
KuCoin exchange listed DCBTC and DCETH pairs. To celebrate their anniversary they had a 99% trading fees discount on DCR pairs for 2 weeks.
Three more wallets integrated Decred in September:
ChangeNow announced Decred addition to their Android app that allows accountless swaps between 150+ assets.
Coinbase launched informational asset pages for top 50 coins by market cap, including Decred. First the pages started showing in the Coinbase app for a small group of testers, and later the web price dashboard went live.

Adoption

The birth of a Brazilian girl was registered on the Decred blockchain using OriginalMy, a blockchain proof of authenticity services provider. Read the full story in Portuguese and in English.

Marketing

Advertising report for September is ready. Next month the graphics for all the ads will be changing.
Marketing might seem quiet right now, but a ton is actually going on behind the scenes to put the right foundation in place for the future. Discovery data are being analyzed to generate a positioning strategy, as well as a messaging hierarchy that can guide how to talk about Decred. This will all be agreed upon via consensus of the community in the work channels, and materials will be distributed.
Next, work is being done to identify the right PR partner to help with media relations, media training, and coordination at events. While all of this is coming up to speed, we believe the website needs a refresher reflecting the soon to be agreed upon messaging, plus a more intuitive architecture to make it easier to navigate. (@Dustorf)

Events

Upcoming:
We'll begin shortly reviewing conferences and events planned for the first half of 2019. Highlights are sure to include The North American Bitcoin Conference in Miami (Jan 16-18) and Consensus in NYC (May 14-16). If you have suggestions of events or conferences Decred should attend, please share them in #event_planning. In 2019, we would like to expand our presence in Europe, Asia, and South America, and we're looking for community members to help identify and staff those events. (@Dustorf)

Markets

In September DCR was trading in the range of USD 34-45 / BTC 0.0054-0.0063. On Sep 6, DCR revisited the bottom of USD 34 / BTC 0.0054 when BTC quickly dropped from USD 7,300 to 6,400. On Sep 14, a small price rise coincided with both the start of KuCoin trading and hashrate spike to 104 PH/s. Looking at coinmarketcap charts, the trading volume is a bit lower than in July and August.
As of Oct 4, Decred is #18 by the number of daily transactions with 3,200 tx, and #9 by the USD value of daily issuance with $230k. (source: onchainfx)
Interesting observation by @ImacallyouJawdy: while we sit at 2018 price lows the amount locked in tickets is testing 2018 high.

Coinbase announced new asset listing process and is accepting submissions on their listing portal. (decred)
The New York State Office of the Attorney General posted a study of 13 exchanges that contains many insights.
A critical vulnerability was discovered and fixed in Bitcoin Core. Few days later a full disclosure was posted revealing the severity of the bug. In a bitcointalk thread btcd was called 'amateur' despite not being vulnerable, and some Core developers voiced their concerns about multiple implementations. The Bitcoin Unlimited developer who found the bug shared his perspective in a blog post. Decred's vision so far is that more full node implementations is a strength, just like for any Internet protocol.
