If block chain is a 'public ledger', how are bitcoin transactions anonymous?

Also, side question:
I've heard that bitcoin miners solve math problems - thats how they earn the bitcoin. I've heard also that miners approve transactions. Is mining/solving the math problem itself approving transitions? Or is the 'math problem' itself a unrelated, arbitrary problem?

Is anonymity possible during transactions?

I signed up on coinbase thinking it will be a simple process so I can make an online purchase but it forced me to give off all information about myself.
If I continue with the identification, add a bank account and purchase a bitcoin amount will I be able to make bitcoin transactions anonymously?

Is Bitcoin anonymous?

Bitcoin transaction's anonymity depends on public-private keys. The digital tie between a public and a private key is stronger than the tie between a person and his DNA.
If you committed a crime but the police had your DNA you would hardly consider yourself safe.
Furthermore there is a necessarily public list of transactions involving your public key and therefore connecting you to others by their public key.
To call this anonymous seems a stretch!

IWTL how to make a genuinely anonymous transaction using bitcoin online, start to finish.

Hi all,
I know basically nothing about cyber security and I want to learn more. I want to start with being able to make anonymous purchases/money transfers online.
This is brand new territory to me — there's something that I would like to buy online that *is* totally legal where I live, but isn't exactly smiled upon. Just in case it becomes illegal in the future I don't want to end up on a list. What are all of the steps that I need to do to make the purchase anonymously?
This is a general skill that I want to have. I started trying to figure it out on my own and got kinda freaked out. Either it is kinda complicated or I am easily spooked. I am really, really not knowledgeable about these things. I am sorry if some of these questions are dumb.
Questions specific to my situation:
-The online shop in question accepts bitcoin. -The website requires that I create an account with them. Should I create a new email address for this? -I know that I need a VPN, and should probably pay for a good one. What is a good one? Would there be any way to connect my paid VPN account to a transaction made while using the VPN? - Could my internet service provider tell 1) that I am using a VPN and 2) how I used it? - How do I actually buy and use bitcoin? Do I need to use another email address than my primary in order to stay secure once I actually make the transaction?

TLDR: what does a total luddite need to know start to finish to buy and use bitcoin anonymously on a website that accepts payments in bitcoin?

Tax advice for relatively anonymous bitcoin transactions

Hi,
Suppose you had a few bitcoin transactions last year that were relatively anonymous:
Get cash from ATM -> Buy gift cards -> Sell gift cards for BTC online -> Use BTC for a few (legal) online transactions - only buying digital goods
Assume that at no point in the above process did you have to put in your real name, ID, or credit card (outside of the initial ATM transaction). Maybe you did this a few times and spent less than $2000 overall. And overall, lost money on the transactions.
Suppose you also did all of that and then didn't keep records of it (or even the logins you used) because you're an idiot and didn't think that this would impact your taxes.
How can you properly report this on your taxes when you don't know the price that you bought, the price that you sold, the exact dates, amounts, or even the sites used? Would those things be a red flag to the IRS?

Transaction Anonymity via Modified Paillier Cryptosystem

Proposed 28th July 2018
PDF: https://eprint.iacr.org/2018/660.pdf
Although this isn't the first research of its kind, it refers to anonymity between Bitcoin buyers/seller instead of on-chain transaction anonymity, I wanted to raise awareness having just read and found it very interesting.
Excerpt:
In the bitcoin protocol, it is hard to hide the identity of a client who buys a bitcoin from a bitcoin provider when the client pays the provider by bank transfer, credit card, PayPal, or even Ali pay. In this paper, we proposed a new blind ECDSA scheme to achieve bitcoin transaction anonymity. With the new blind ECDSA scheme, the client can pay the provider by any payment approach to exchange a blind signature of the provider on the transaction and later broadcast it in the bitcoin network. The bitcoin provider cannot tell the relationship between the real identities of clients and the sold bitcoins in the blockchain.

Traceability of Bitcoin-Transactions / How to stay fully anonymous?

Hey guys.
I don't really know that much about Bitcoin and got a question, I thought this might be the best place to ask about this.
So I'm planning on finally getting a VPN and have been eyeing Mullvad, which seems to be a very trustable and anonymous Provider. Upon Account-creation you just get a number, that's your whole account: no username, no email, no nothing, just that number. That means not even they can connect your identity with your account.
The only thing that might connect the account and your identity is the payment. To be FULLY anonymous it wouldn't be smart to pay by bank transfer or with your every day PayPal-Account, but luckily they offer to pay with Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash.
As far as I know Bitcoin is just pseudo anonymous, as you can trace back every transaction to the wallets it came from, and at one point in time you had to create an account somewhere with your personal information to even buy Bitcoin in the first place.
Which brings me to my question: Is there any way to stay fully anonymous the whole way, buying and sending Bitcoin?
There are services like anycoindirect.eu where you can buy Bitcoin etc. and send them directly to an address you'd like to. (In this case I'd send it to the payment address for the VPN) But to do that you have to create an account there with your personal information yada yada yada. I guess they have one address where they keep their Bitcoin and send it from this address to wherever. Would this be directly traceable to ones account? Or would this step make the payment of the VPN untraceable to my accountdata on their site?
Before there arises suspicion: I don't wanna do some highly illegal things, don't worry haha. Most illegal thing would maybe be some torrenting from time to time lol. I just want to be sure that there is no way I can be traced by paying and using this VPN.
Well before I write a whole book I'll keep it at that..
Thanks for helping out a cryptodummy :-)
