The Bitcoin Boy (aka bitcoin as clickbait)

So I picked the latest issue of New York Magazine this morning, and there's an article titled "The Bitcoin Boy", so I'm excited that I'll have something good to read on the subway. But as it turns out the article has nothing to do with bitcoin. There's 1 paragraph that mentions Erik Finman buying bitcoin in early 2013 and then selling it later in the year. Seriously?!
But maybe this is a good thing that "bitcoin" is being used as clickbait.

Fixing Crypto - The issues of a static legend in a fast paced battle royale (Long post)

Crypto, the least picked legend and arguably the least viable. He is, theoretically, the perfect recon character. His drone grants him a detailed insight to access massive areas , something which no other legends can come even close to doing; he can see who's fighting who, deathbox locations, traps and everything in between. His ultimate, if used correctly, can be the perfect engagement tool: one that grants your team a potentially invaluable advantage and allow you to win battles solely due to the advantage of being able to take more hits (hypothetically of course, discounting the type of shields equipped by both parties).
Alas, Crypto remains firmly outside of the meta and is instead stuck as a bottom tier legend. In fact, whilst I am personally a massive fan of him, I am myself hesitant to use him and am writing this today as I had a damage challenge on him. I played three games in total, winning one and unlocking the apex predator badge (just one quick flex I'm sorry). But it was this that lead me to a solid conclusion, one that has undoubtedly been reached by the majority of players who have played as, or even just been in a squad with, Crypto. Apex is a game that relies heavily on speed and precision: where legends like octane, wraith and pathfinder (pre-nerf at least, according to many) can engage and disengage at lightning quick speed. And yet, inexplicably, to use his full abilities Crypto must remain static for large portions of time.
Now, many people will become outraged with what I have just said. I can hear cries echoing in my ears from a dozen youtube guides; "You're not playing him right!" or "It's about playing in a pre-made squad". But here are two points I would like to make, defending the argument that Crypto is a sub-par legend.
  1. If so many people find themselves unable to use Crypto effectively, to the point that he is reduced to a sub par legend, then is that a fault of the player or of the character? Of course, a player can learn to play Crypto with some guise of effectual use, but to do so requires the player to act outside of the box: to play in a style which is an antithesis of how Crypto's current abilities work. To activate his drone you must sacrifice your ability to move (even when sliding you must come to a stop at some point, and there is not always chance to slide). In a game with the aforementioned rapidness of legends, even a split second pause as you change from drone to Crypto can be costly.
  2. Requiring a team is not a valid argument for playing a character. No other legend has this handicap to be used to the utmost effectiveness. Every single one can be played solo, using only the ping system to communicate with your teammates. And yet, to use Crypto effectively, you need a team.
So what is the major problem with Crypto? I've already mentioned it but I'll go into a bit more detail here. He is static, and he is the only legend to face this issue. Sure, some legends do not have any movement based ability (caustic, my main legend, and Wattson surely come to mind for many due to their defensive natures). But that isn't what I mean. Every other tactical ability in the game is usable with a single button press. You use an ability and it is used, and you can continue fighting. Caustic throws a trap and returns seamlessly to firing his gun. Wattson places a fence and revives a teammate in the brief interlude of peace that has been garnered by her ability. Every other legend can integrate their abilities seamlessly into combat. But Crypto can not. He is bound to the corners of room, sweating nervously as he drones an area, knowing that if he is caught of guard he is likely to perish before he can raise his gun. And in the cases where the drone is positioned and he is logged off? The drone is a massive, stationary target.
But do not despair! I have devised an ingenious solution: a rework that would make the use of the drone a seamless one and grant Crypto more chance to fight.

Passive: This is a passive that has been mentioned by many before and for good reason; it is useful without being too overpowered. Whilst sheathed, the drone will spot enemies behind Crypto. Whilst functionally similar to Wraith's passive, the drone would trade the 360 degree radius of Wraith's passive for the ability to know the precise location of your target for a few moments (the ping on the target would prevail through walls for two seconds or so, similar to bloodhound's tactical). However there is a problem with this passive; whilst the drone is in use the passive becomes useless.
This is why I am proposing that Crypto acts as a mode switching character; that is, his abilities are different depending on whether the player is in control of him or the drone. This means that the neurolink passive would remain whilst the drone is in flight, switching to the aforementioned passive whilst the drone is sheathed.
Tactical: The ultimate downfall of Crypto, requiring so much effort to use. But what if the tactical had two functions? Firstly, whilst sheathed, pressing the tactical button will cause the drone to fly to the targeted location like a mirage clone would. When it reaches the target location it will remain still and scan anyone entering the field of few. This would allow Crypto to use the drone in a more passive manner; directing it into a house to scan for targets or sending it to the left to cover a passage whilst he goes right. The important matter is that the use of the drone is seamless, done without breaking control of Crypto.
Once the drone is out you have two options. Pressing the tactical button will switch between drone view and Crypto view, just as it currently does. Holding the button will return the drone to his sheathe. Voila, simple,
One quick thing to note is the visibility of the drone. I believe that the drone should only have the glow around it to enemies that are being scanned by it. You would still be able to see it from afar of course, as long as you have a keen eye, but it will not be a massive target. This should preserve Crypto's ability to use his tactical without providing too much of a disadvantage to players being scanned.
Ultimate: I personally think the ultimate is fine as it is, though being unable to use it is when the drone is destroyed can be frustrating. The one thing I will note is that Crypto should be able to activate his EMP whilst using the quick tap tactical, making the use of the ultimate more seamless and allowing for Crypto to push alongside his team.
So there we have it, the end of a text post that is probably unnecessarily long. If you have read this far then I appreciate your dedication to the Bitcoin Boy. Please feel free to ask any questions below, to call be an idiot for my idea or even to just say that I'm not playing him right.

Portsmouth, NH “Crypto city” has lost Dash

Here’s an unfortunate story I heard recently that has me a little worried about the nature of Dash. I went to Portsmouth NH not too long ago to use some Dash, but the stores are all either shuttered or have stopped accepting it. When I asked why, they said “the bitcoin boys went to Amsterdam.” Apparently the merchants were not advised to sell around the purchase time in order to maintain their net sales profits. It sounds like the merchants started losing money by holding their Dash in the recent price downturn, and that the people who helped them set up Dash in the first place were unreachable. Kind of a shame, but it looks like we’ve lost Portsmouth NH, at least for now. The lesson I learned is that I f you’re out there, trying to get merchants to accept Dash, make sure they have a FIAT offramp and are well informed about the risk of holding coins well past the sales date at a business, since the person I talked to didn’t seem too happy about it and didn’t really want to talk about it. Thanks for listening.
