/u/ultra-royalist on What are your thoughts on left-wing ideologies that advocate for small, localized/decentralized governments such as anarcho-socialism, anarcho-syndicalism, agorism, mutualism, etc?

Revolutionary Catalonia (July 21, 1936 – 1939) was the part of Catalonia (a region in northeast Spain) controlled by the anarchist and socialist trade unions, parties, and militias during the Spanish Civil War.
https://infogalactic.com/info/Revolutionary_Catalonia
Controlled by trade unions? Not an anarchist venture. It seemed to collapse of its own mismanagement.
The Free Territory (Ukrainian: Вільна територія vilna terytoriya; Russian: свободная территория svobodnaya territoriya) or Makhnovia (Махновщина Makhnovshchyna) resulted from an attempt to form a stateless anarchist[1] society during the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917 to 1921. It existed from 1918 to 1921, during which time "free soviets" and libertarian communes[2] operated under the protection of Nestor Makhno's Revolutionary Insurrectionary Army.

Again, we have strong state presence.
From 1929 to 1931, two million Korean migrants ran an autonomous, Anarchist zone in Shinmin, a rural province in Manchuria (in China) across the border from Korea. Residents made decisions at village assemblies, which confederated into district councils and area councils.[1] The confederation, known as the Korean People’s Association in Manchuria (KPAM), had administrative departments that assisted with agriculture, education, finance, military affairs, and health. Staff in these departments received no more than the province's average wage. The KPAM described itself as "an independent self-governing cooperative system of the Korean people who assembled their full power to save our nation by struggling against Japan".

Another de facto socialist microstate.
All had stability problems, and we have no good example of them functioning because they lasted such a short while.
Currencies like bitcoin aren't managed by the government in any way whatsoever.
Yes, we know. Talking down to your audience helps no one. You missed the point: if currency is distributed, it requires a central authority.

MeWe: A trip report

Among the more frequently mentioned G+ alternatives at the Google+ Mass Migration community, and others, is MeWe with over 250 mentions. The site bills itself as "The Next-Gen Social Network" and the "anti-Facebook": "No Ads, No Political Bias, No Spyware. NO BS. It is headed by professed Libertarian CEO Mark Weinstein.
As the site reveals no public user-generated content to non-members, it's necessary to create an account in order to get a full impression. I thought I'd provide an overview based on recent explorations.
This report leads of with background on the company, though readers may find the report and analysis of specific groups on the site of interest.

Leadership

Founder & CEO Mark Weinstein.
Co-Founder & Chief Scientist, Jonathan Wolfe (no longer with company).
Weinstein previously founded SuperFamily and SuperFriends, "at the turn of the millennium". Weinstein's MeWe biography lists articles published by The Mirror (UK), Huffington Post, USA Today, InfoSecurity Magazine, Dark Reading, and the Nation. His media appearances include MarketWatch, PBS, Fox News, and CNN. He's also the author of several personal-success books.
His Crunchbase bio is a repeat of the MeWe content.

  1. You own your personal information & content. It is explicitly not ours.
  2. You will never receive a targeted advertisement or 3rd party content based on what you do or say online. We think that's creepy.

Press

There are a few mentions of MeWe in the press, some listed on the company's website, others via web search.

Self-reported articles

The following articles are linked directly from MeWe's Press page:
The page also lists a "Privacy Revolution Required Reading" list of 20 articles all addressing Facebook privacy gaffes in the mainstream press (Wired, TechCrunch, Fortune, Gizmodo, The Guardian, etc.).
There are further self-reported mentions in several of the company's PR releases over the years.

Other mentions

A DuckDuckGo search produces several other press mentions, including:

Technology

This section is a basic rundown of the user-visible site technology.

Mobile Web

The site is not natively accessible from a mobile Web browser as it is overlayed with a promotion for the mobile application instead. Selecting "Desktop View" in most mobile browsers should allow browser-based access.

Mobile App

There are both Android and iOS apps for MeWe. I've used neither of these, though the App store entries note:
Crunchbase cites 209,220 mobile downloads over the past 30 days (via Apptopia), an 80.78% monthly growth rate, from Google Play.

Desktop Web

Either selecting "View Desktop" or navigating with a Desktop browser to https://www.mewe.com your are presented with a registration screen, with the "About", "Privacy Bill of Rights", "MeWe Challenge", and a language selector across the top of the page. Information requested are first and last name, phone or email, and a password. Pseudonymous identities are permitted, though this isn't noted on the login screen. Returning members can use the "Member Log In" button.
The uMatrix Firefox extension reveals no third-party content: all page elements are served from mewe.com, img.mewe.com, cdn.mewe.com, or ws.mewe.com. (In subsequent browsing, you may find third-party plugins from, for example, YouTube, for videos, or Giphy, for animated GIFs.)
The web front-end is nginx. The site uses SSL v3, issued by DigiCert Inc. to Sgrouples, Inc.

Onboarding

The onboarding experience is stark. There is no default content presented. A set of unidentified icons spans the top of the screen, these turn out to be Home, Chats, Groups, Pages, and Events. New users have to, somehow, find groups or people to connect with, and there's little guidance as to how to do this.

Interface

Generally there is a three panel view, with left- and right-hand sidebars of largely navigational or status information, and a central panel with main content. There are also pop-up elements for chats, an omnipresent feature of the site.
Controls display labels on some devices and/or resolutions. Controls do not provide tooltips for navigational aid.

Features

Among the touted features of MeWe are:

Community

A key aspect of any social network is its community. Some of the available or ascertained information on this follows.

Size

Weinstein claims a "million+ following inside MeWe.com" on Twitter.
The largest visible groups appear to have a maximum of around 15,000 members , for "Awesome gifs". "Clean Comedy" rates 13,350, and the largest open political groups, 11,000+ members.
This compares to Google+ which has a staggering, though Android-registrations-inflated 3.3 billion profiles, and 7.9 million communities, though the largest of these come in at under 10 million members. It's likely that MeWe's membership is on the whole more more active than Google+'s, where generally-visible posting activity was limited to just over 9% of all profiles, and the active user base was well under 1% of the total nominal population.

Active Users

MeWe do not publish active users (e.g., MUA / monthly active users) statistics.

Groups

MeWe is principally a group-oriented discussion site -- interactions take place either between individuals or within group contexts. Virtually all discovery is group-oriented. The selection and dynamics of groups on the site will likely strongly affect user experience, so exploring the available groups and their characteristics is of interest.
"MeWe has over 60,000 open groups" according to its FAQ.
The Open groups -- visible to any registered MeWe user, though not to the general public Web -- are browsable, though sections and topics must be expanded to view the contents: an overview isn't immediately accessible. We provide a taste here.
A selection of ten featured topics spans the top of the browser. As I view these, they are:
Specific groups may appear in multiple categories.
The top Groups within these topics have, variously, 15,482, 7,738, 15,482 (dupe), 7,745, 8,223, 8,220, 1,713, 9,527, 2,716, and 1,516 members. Listings scroll at length -- the Music topic has 234 Groups, ranging in size from 5 to 5,738 members, with a median of 59, mean of 311.4, and a 90%ile of 743.5.
Below this is a grid of topics, 122 in all, ranging from Activism to Wellness, and including among them. A selected sample of these topics, with top groups listed members in (parens), follows:
To be clear: whilst I've not included every topic, I've sampled a majority of them above, and listed not an arbitrary selection, but the top few Groups under each topic.

Google+ Groups

The Google Plus expats group seems the most active of these by far.

Political Groups

It's curious that MeWe make a specific point in their FAQ that:
At MeWe we have absolutely no political agenda and we have a very straightforward Terms of Service. MeWe is for all law-abiding people everywhere in the world, regardless of political, ethnic, religious, sexual, and other preferences.
There are 403 political groups on MeWe. I won't list them all here, but the first 100 or so give a pretty clear idea of flavour. Again, membership is in (parentheses). Note that half the total political Groups memberships are in the first 21 groups listed here, the first 6 are 25% of the total.

It seems there is relatively little representation from the left wing, or even the centre, of the political spectrum. A case-insensitive match for "liberal" turns up:
Mainstream political parties are little represented, though again, the balance seems skewed searching on "(democrat|republic|gop)":
The terms "left" and "right" provide a few matches, not all strictly political-axis aligned:
Socialism and Communism also warrant a few mentions:
And there are some references to green, laboulabor parties:

Conclusion

Whilst there may not be a political agenda, there does appear to be at least a slight political bias to the site. And a distinctive skew on many other topical subjects.
Those seeking new homes online may wish to take this into account.

Updates

State of the Libertarian Movement

I think it is time we provided an update on where we are as a movement.
I will break this down into pieces. Additionally, I will include my own observations and suggestions:
Seasteading
Seasteading is progressing faster than any other direct action undertaken by this movement. Anenome5 has established a company called Ventive Floathouse. This company endeavors to establish the first seastead in Richardson Bay, off the coast of California. It will be a visa haven, appealing to those attempting to bypass America's ornery visa requirements. In the following years after this island has been established, Ventive Floathouse will attempt to build the first seastead in international waters, which will be explicitly anarcho-capitalist. They are currently $450k away from funding the first seastead in Richardson Bay. They are currently testing the design of the island and will not begin accepting funding until testing has been completed. If you or anyone you know would be interested in investing in this project, contact Anenome5 through the website link provided above.
The Seasteading Institute has achieved a Memorandum of Understanding with the French Polynesian government. This Memorandum has been criticized by some within the FP government and the FP public, as seen in this article. Regardless, it appears that the project is moving forward. The plan is to create 12 artificial islands within 1 mile of the FP coastline, funded by investors and an ICO. The project is projected to be completed by 2020, however only time will tell if the Institute will meet that deadline.
In other news, a corporation has officially began marketing artificial islands for the price of 300 million dollars, see here. Their target consumers are the ultra-rich. This suggests that, in the coming decades, seasteading will become an increasingly viable alternative to buying an island.
Suggestions: Support Ventive Floathouse in any way you can. Be the change you want to see. This may be our best shot at establishing an anarcho-capitalist society within the next two decades.
Libertarian Party of the United States of America
In the Presidential Election of 2016, the LPUSA achieved 3.2 percent of the popular vote, a total of 4,042,291 voters. This is a significant improvement over the 2012 election, in which roughly 1 million people voted for the LPUSA. The real challenge will be repeating this success in the next election. Gary Johnson has announced that he will not be running for president in 2020.
The LPUSA has announced its intention to get 2,000 candidates on the ballot for the 2018 elections. Whether or not this will occur remains to be seen.
Despite achieving 3.2 percent of the popular vote, the LPUSA is still struggling to acquire permanent ballot access in all 50 states. The LPUSA currently has ballot access in a majority of states.
In the aftermath of the 2016 National Convention, the LPUSA has been experiencing somewhat of an identity crisis. A fat individual in a speedo danced on stage while the event was broadcast live on CSPAN, significantly tarnishing the reputation of the party. Anarcho-capitalists were widely blamed by moderate libertarians for this incident, despite our outright condemnation of said incident. Libertarians are in the process of deciding whether the party should be radical or moderate in its message and platform. The majority of libertarians wish to see the LPUSA become more moderate, and to abandon such phrases as "Taxation is Theft". There is even a socialist caucus within the Libertarian Party.
In an attempt to preserve the radical libertarian and anarcho-capitalist elements within the LPUSA, the Mises Caucus has been established. Together with the Radical Caucus, these organizations seek to promote radical libertarianism and to elect party officials and political candidates who will represent them.
The Libertarian National Committee is comprised of 8 representatives from 8 regions. Region 1, based in Colorado, is represented by an anarcho-capitalist named Caryn Ann Harlos. I do not know if any of the other committee members are anarcho-capitalists.
in 2014, the former chairman of the Libertarian Party Geoff Neale made history when he was appointed to establish the International Alliance of Libertarian Parties. This is the first attempt by the libertarian parties of the world to coordinate internationally.
Suggestions: Libertarians should seek a moderate platform while maintaining a radical message. Efforts should be made to appeal to a majority of voters while raising the libertarian consciousness of the population to the highest degree possible. Libertarians should focus primarily on running in state and local elections in an attempt to maximize our influence on the American population.
The Free State Project
Thousands of libertarians have moved to New Hampshire in an attempt to influence the politics of the state towards a more libertarian direction. Libertarians have run as republicans and democrats and been successfully elected to office. Statist laws have been repealed and more libertarian laws have been enacted, such as protections for Bitcoin sellers.
Suggestions: Libertarians should move to New Hampshire in greater numbers and run for positions in the local and state governments. Organizations should be established to carry out activism, namely:
And more. Which brings me to my next topic:
Activism
Libertarians, especially outside of NH, have engaged in very little activism. This is due to both a lack of organization and a lack of ideas. Meanwhile, non-libertarians have been engaging in activism that might interest radical libertarians. An example of this are the intermittent property tax protests that have swept across parts of rural America.
Suggestions: Libertarians should seek to emulate the Chicago Tax Strike of 1977. Libertarian organizations should hold town hall meetings about issues that concern the public, such as high property taxes, and attempt to radicalize the public toward direct action, such as a protest or tax strike. Once direct action is underway, libertarians should seek to raise the libertarian consciousness of the disgruntled masses. For example, if people are protesting high property taxes, you can attempt to turn their attention (and anger) to the recipients of those taxes, such as the education system. Instead of being angry about just property taxes, you can make them angry at the public schools who receive it (and waste the money). In this manner, you will raise the libertarian consciousness of the protesters. We must always seek to radicalize and raise the libertarian consciousness of the American people.
Which brings me to a classic example of what we are trying to achieve:
Free Brazil Movement
A few years ago, the Atlas Network and a coalition of charitable organizations provided millions of dollars in funding and a number of activist leaders to think tanks in Brazil. The provision of funding and leaders culminated in the establishment of the Free Brazil Movement, led by Kim Kataguiri. With the support of the Atlas Network and affiliated think tanks, they were able to mobilize many tens of thousands of Brazilian citizens to take to the streets and protest against the socialist government.
The Free Brazil Movement organized the demonstrations of 15 March and 12 April in 2015 against the social governmental establishment of Dilma Rousseff and the Workers' Party, and was instrumental in the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff. See article and video here.
In the aftermath of the uprising, thousands of Brazilians have converted to libertarianism. Some of them are English speakers who frequent this subreddit's Discord Server.
Suggestions: Do everything within your power to support the blossoming libertarian movement in Brazil. Learn Portuguese, translate literature to Portuguese, print flyers and posters in their language, and donate to libertarian institutions in Brazil. Libertarianism is now an international movement, and it is time we acted like one. Emulate their success in raising the libertarian consciousness of the masses, to such a degree that thousands of libertarians were born. And above all, let us work together. Americans and Brazilians, hand in hand!
Students for Liberty
SFL has evolved into a decentralized international organization, with chapters ranging from America to Brazil to Europe and Asia. Gone are the days when SFL was a small organization; it is now a massive organization with thousands of members across the world. SFL represents the spearhead of the libertarian student movement, providing a presence on college campuses and aiding in the recruitment of new libertarians.
Suggestions: We must do everything in our power to build the libertarian student movement. If you are on college campus, it is in your best interest to organize with other libertarians and engage in whatever activism and propaganda dissemination you can. We must build a Student Libertarian Action Movement (SLAM) on every college campus that we can.
Free Society Foundation
Roger Ver and a group of wealthy individuals have raised 100 million dollars in an attempt to purchase sovereignty from a host nation. While the odds of this succeeding are slim, this amounts to the largest holding of capital ever accumulated by a group of anarcho-capitalists. This money could easily be spent on seasteading, activism, advertising, and more.
Suggestions: Let this serve as an example for others to follow. When we pool our money together and raise capital, we can accomplish great things.
Crypto-Anarchism and Crypto-currencies
Bitcoin has come a long way in the last few years. The price has soared and it is beginning to see widespread adoption. It has also given birth to a multitude of new crypto-currencies, such as BCH, Litecoin, Monero, Ethereum, Ripple, etc. Gone are the days when bitcoin was a secret treasure of libertarians. It has now been co-opted by the average joe, for better or worse. Some libertarians argue that this transition, combined with increasing state regulations on crypto-currency, has challenged Bitcoin’s revolutionary nature. But with new currencies like Monero offering the promise of anonymity, many libertarians believe the full revolutionary potential of crypto-currencies has yet to be realized.
The NSA revelations of recent years have resulted in the popularization of crypto-graphic tools, such as Signal, TOR, I2P, etc. Mass surveillance has provoked a widespread counter-surveillance movement.
The Silk Road is long gone, but on the horizon is a new innovation- the Open Bazaar. Decentralized, reputation-based, and incorporating the use of 3rd party arbitration, the combination of software like Open Bazaar with anonymizing tools will facilitate the establishment of an anarcho-capitalist marketplace on the internet.
In the last few years, we have seen the innovation of new ways of engaging in market activities and contractual arrangements, from smart contracts to multi-sig. With these developments destined to advance, the future of crypto-anarchism looks promising.
Suggestions: Spread the word about Open Bazaar and cryptographic tools. Warn others about the NSA in the hopes that it will entice others to begin using such tools. Help to develop the latest in cryptographic tools and protocols so that we may ore effectively establish radical libertarianism on the internet.
Agorism and Crypto-Agorism
Despite a large number of libertarians claiming to be Agorists, very few libertarians abide by the founding document of Agorism, the New Libertarian Manifesto. Most libertarians do not engage in Agorist praxis beyond holding cryptocurrency and retreating to rural homesteads to live in isolation. The strategy of Agorism traditionally requires organization on the part of New Libertarians. Instead, libertarians seem to have adopted a new strategy, referred to as Crypto-Agorism. Crypto-Agorism is a merger of the strategy of Agorism with Crypto-Anarchism. In other words, it is the attempt to realize Agorism on the internet, through the use of tools such as Monero and the Open Bazaar. While Crypto-Agorism blossoms, traditional Agorism appears to be stagnating.
Suggestions: Crypto-Agorism should continue to be pursued. However, libertarians must organize into chapters of the New Libertarian Alliance, participate in counter-economics (beyond the use of cryptographic tools and currencies) and build alternative institutions if we are to truly develop the counter-economy beyond the confines of the internet.
Conclusion
There is more than I could write about, but I will stop there. The next decade will be a turning point for the libertarian movement. Are we prepared to organize, raise capital, build alternative institutions, and ultimately construct a free society? Only time will tell.

The word "Government" also means 'mind control'

This issue has been talked about before and remains controversial.[1][2]
The linguistic ambiguity of the word Government suggests it is an compount word, an etymological cryptonym, that simultaneously means mind control, 'state of control', or 'whose product is control'.
What 'ment' meant
The controversy stems over the etymology of the suffix -ment, taken as a 'state of being' or 'state of action', "product or means"[3][4] (as in implement or compliment), in contrast to a 'state of the mind' or 'having to do with the mind" (latter two examples being similar to ment of mental), given that it is a one-to-one match with the Latin ment. The controversy being that compound words do exist, even in Latin[5]. Though it's not listed among this list, need i remind you there's not a statement of it being all-inclusive, and that the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, unless you want to rethink your consent for the entire Iraq War.
Key Ver Nos
That said, the etymology of govern is very clear and unambiguous--Govern means to control, to 'steer' (as in a ship).
Middle English: from Old French governer, from Latin gubernare ‘to steer, rule,’ from Greek kubernan ‘to steer.’[5]
Therefore in a nutshell, Government means one of the following
  • The State of Control (Steering / Guiding, as in a ship or vessel)
  • The Process of Control
  • Whose product is Control
  • Mind Control
  • Control over the mind or state of mind
I suggest that government is all these things. That the word government means control grid, "social control",, the process and activity of the same, creating the same for itself; for the self-serving purpose of maintaining itself within a state of control; the control created by itself, for itself and of itself; and of course mind control, the process and activity of steering the mind, the product described as control of the mind. The word is ALL of these things, simultaneously.
That's the true function of government : control. Or given the superset of all contexts we described above, perception management. The wizard of oz was guy behind a curtain pulling levers, appearing to be big and powerful. He was very much involved in perception management. He was a metaphor for the government.
Now one of the most salient characteristics of government is it's extreme willingness to demonize any attempts to dimish it, even if it would help those whom it purports to serve by making its systems more efficient and effective. This suggests governement only wants to maintain its size or grow. Therefore such things as agorism, anarchism, actual democracy (not the illusury representitive fascist oligarchism or inverted totalitarianism we have now), cooperationism, cooperatives, "crowd funded" or peer technologies etc (uber, bitcoin, airbnb), are such a threat to shrink the government--as their decentralized ad-hoc paradigms threaten to disintermediate and diminish its attempts at central control.
Interesting digression, the word cybernetics shares a common etymology (kubernikos) with government[666]. It's also a worthy showerthought to note that cy of cyber is a homonym with psy as in psychology, and yet both cybernetics and government both have to do with 'steering'.
It's all a Big Ship and you aren't on it
If Government is a ship to be steered, what happens when the mateys stop swabbing the deck, and instead build their own skiffs and jump ship? Government crashes on shoals that's what. Full stop.
This is why Government better start making the mateys happy and more free, restoring rights to 70s rights, or else they will see what kind of ingenuity modern digruntled pirates--who basically did all the work to build the world around them--have in crafting heir own lifeboats.

Hi /r/cascadia! My friend and I are thinking about living in Portland on Bitcoins alone. Who should we talk to?

If you can help us find a space, or Know People who might be interested in selling goods and services, please let us know!
Some background:
I'm a 22 y.o. EE who took a Bitcoin Roadtrip from Hartford to Los Angeles, spending only Bitcoins for two months. I spent the most on gas and food, usually with proxy buys.
I'm an agorist, so I think having a local non-FRN currency will lead to more efficient businesses, cheaper products, and reduced need for government.
So we'll be starting from the ground up, building the community of Cascadians who are interested in participating. We'll set up an open source framework to make it easy to trade goods and services, and use a web of trust to let you filter content according to the people you trust.
I ended up in Portland in late June after finishing up the roadtrip and I really like it here. I'm keeping an eye out for EE jobs but in the meantime, I'm unemployed. This puts me in a catch 22 because it's damn difficult to get a roof over my head without income and it's damn difficult to do anything productive without a workspace. My buddy took a bus from the Northeast and he's right here with me. We've been couchsurfing for a few weeks but our welcome is wearing thin and my car's in the shop.
So, finding some housing is our number one priority. We're looking for a headquarters where we live and work. We'll consider anything with plumbing, wiring, and cell/internet coverage. A cheap penthouse in Metro Portland would be the best location, or barring that, at least somewhere with MAX access. We'd like to find some housemates to participate in the project, so the ideal space could fit maybe 4-8 people.
I'm willing to spend dollars for utilities and rent if necessary; the housemates can pool their bitcoins and sell them at the end of the month for these bills. Of course, this does kinda feel like cheating, so we would be happier if a landlord was willing to accept BTC. They can always sell the btc for dollars immediately.
Finding food and clothing will be a second priority. Got a food truck or a shop somewhere? It'll be really easy for you to participate - I've seen some nice web apps, android apps, and exchanges that are all improving the bitcoin user experience.
We might get some IP cameras and sell access to live streams, make it a reality show type deal. We won't start living on Bitcoins alone until a) we've planned this out thoroughly enough or b) I hit my credit card limit, whichever comes first.

NSA's Leaked Malware is Being Weaponized by Criminals

This is an automatic summary, original reduced by 75%.
" The article explains, "In its seventh CIA leak since March 23rd, WikiLeaks has just revealed the user manual of a CIA hacking tool known as 'Archimedes' which is purportedly used to attack computers inside a Local Area Network. The CIA tool works by redirecting a target's webpage search to a CIA server which serves up a webpage that looks exactly like the original page they were expecting to be served, but which contains malware. It's only possible to detect the attack by examining the page source."
The article explains, "The Shadow Brokers has now appeared to have put up the NSA's hacking tools and exploits for direct sale on an underground website. Each of the items on the site is categorized into a type - like"exploits," "Trojans," and "implant" - each of which is ranged from 1 to 100 Bitcoins.
Four months after the private sale, the hacker group Shadow Brokers released a treasure trove of documents and executables that disclosed some NSA surveillance tools, strategies and targets.
Ars Technica supplies a valuable list and brief summary of the NSA tools that may be weaponized.
The Register reports, "The leaked archive also contains the NSA's equivalent of the Metasploit hacking toolkit: FUZZBUNCH. Matthew Hickey, cofounder of British security shop Hacker House, told The Register FUZZBUNCH is a very well-developed package that allows servers to be penetrated with a few strokes of the keyboard. The toolkit has modules to install a backdoor on invaded boxes to remote control the gear and romp through file systems."

Bitcoin blocks are designed to be discovered every ten minutes. To achieve this gap in time, mining is designed to be computationally expensive through a process called proof of work . Bitcoin's proof of work algorithm, called Hashcash , uses the SHA-256 hash algorithm to generate verifiably "random" numbers in a way that requires a predictable Bitcoin uses: SHA256(SHA256(Block_Header)) but you have to be careful about byte-order. For example, this python code will calculate the hash of the block with the smallest hash as of June 2011, Block 125552.
