(PDF) What drives Bitcoin price? - ResearchGate

The outer limits of bitcoin price speculation: a nearly vertical move from current levels to $500,000 a coin at the end of 2015. What would the world say if this Black Swan actually happened?

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=800330.0
It sounds ludicrous, and I don't necessarily believe it. But I'm trying to imagine what it would be like if this really happened.
Media would explode, and all the pundits would quickly change their tune. "Well, it's an entire currency exploding into the modern world, a move like this should have been foreseeable."
Institutions would justify spending thousands and then tens of thousands of dollars per coin because that asset will be so hyper-rapidly increasing in value it makes complete sense. This basically is the legend of bitcoin hyperadoption. When the tipping point of bitcoin adoption spills over from technical startup to full on global levels.
Governments recognize a way to finally be a recognized international force, and private institutions see a way to become more powerful than they ever imagined.
And the little man? Me and you? You think we will resist selling our $380 bitcoins for $10,000 or even $50,000? Most will not.
This would be the black Swan of a lifetime, and it's not impossible. Just unlikely. Just like all black swans.

MiniSwap -- A New Hybrid Incentive Model in DeFi

Cryptocurrency exchanges process over $20 billion in trade volume per day. Most of the transactions are going through centralized exchanges, where the users need to fully trust them for managing their assests and transactions. However, the risk of trusting these centralized exchanges has also been seen. For example, QuadrigaCX, which was the largest cryptocurrency exchange in Canada, lost $19 million of their customers' assets [1].
Decentralized Exchanges (DEXes) have been introduced to address this problem -- they allow traders to purchase and sell cryptocurrencies in a peer-to-peer manner, so no involvement of any trusted party is required. Atomic Swap is one of the promising technology for implementing a DEX. While it enables pure peer to peer trading, it also introduces problems such as unfairness and long confirmation latency. While existing work [2] has provided a solution towards a fair atomic swap protocol, the issue of long confirmation latency is inherent.
Another promising direction is leveraging liquidity pools. With liquidity pools, pairs of assets are reserved for trading. For any pair of assets supported by the liquidity pool, traders can exchange their assets without any third party. As traders can only perform the transactions if there are reserved assets, one core problem is how to attract liquidity providers to provide liquidity by reserving assets. It is not difficult to see that incentive [3,4], which has been a key component of all permissionless blockchains, can be equipped to incentivize liqudity providers. However, flawed incentive designs will lead to attacks and other concerns [5-13].
There are two main types of incentive designs, namely "trans-fee mining" and "liquidity mining". They are different from the Proof-of-X mining in blockchains for reaching consensus (a detailed analysis can be found in the survey [14]). Rather, they are used to incentivise users to join the ecosystem.
"Trans-fee mining" was proposed by FCoin in 2018 [15]. With FCoin, each time a transaction is created, 100% of its transaction fee will be returned in FCoin token to the payer as a reward. This is one incentive design to encourage traders to join the system. However, as FCoin may have no value to the trader, FCoin also introduces extra reward to all coin holders -- 80% of the transaction fee in its native currency (such as ETH) will be distributed to all coin holders. So, traders are incentivized to join the system, becoming a holder of FCoin token, and obtaining a share of the transaction fee of every transaction in the FCoin ecosystem.
While this had successful attracted traders, it is not sustainable. Rather than charging a trader to perform transactions, FCoin rewards traders. Profit-driven traders will create transactions at full speed to earn FCoin token and the share as a token holder. Indeed, the trading volume of FCoin was the top one among all exchange services, and the daily reward can be as high as 6000 BTC [16]. However, once all coins are minted, then the system would lose liveness as there is not enough supply to be distributed.
"Liquidity mining" aims at giving reward to the liquidity providers rather than the traders. There are different ways to implement liquidity mining. Compound [17] is a famous example of protocols deploying liquidity mining. With Compound, users become a liquidity provider by supply assets to a pool and obtain interests for its contribution (similar to depositing money into a bank). Liquidity providers first reserve some assets in the pool and obtain "cToken" of Compound which entitles the owner to an increasing quantity of the underlying asset. Users can use their "cToken" to borrow different assets available on the Compound and pay some interests to Compund. The borrowers may have some quick gains through the financial games [18]. Both borrowers and liquidity providers can withdraw their asset by trading them back with "cToken". Oners of "cToken" can also manage the business direction and decisions of Compound through weighted voting. The potential concern here is that rich users might be able to take over the control of the system.
Uniswap [19] is another popular DEX deploying liquidity mining. Uniswap incentivizes liquidity providers by giving them a share of the earned transaction fees. In particular, Uniswap changes each transaction a 0.3% fee, where 0.25% will be distributed to the liquidity providers, and 0.05% will go to the Uniswap account. One issue is how to incentivize traders. With Uniswap, traders are incentivized by the potential profit it can gain through the price difference between Uniswap and other exchanges. Uniswap price oracle is based on a constant function market makers [20,21], where the product of the number of reserved tokens is a constant. For example, if Uniswap has a pair of X token A and Y token B, then when a user using X' token A to buy Y' token B, the product of the reserved number of tokens should remain the same, i.e., XY = (X+X')(Y-Y'). The price of Uniswap (V1) is also defined in this way. This allows traders to speculate in the exchange market as the asset price on Uniswap is changed dynamically and is different from other exchanges. This, on the other hand, may have a security risk as the price can be easily manipulated. Uniswap (V2) fixed this problem by taking an accumulated price over a period of time [22]. However, as speculation/manipulation becomes harder, the trading volume may decrease.
MiniSwap [23] introduces a hybrid model (a mixture of "trans-fee mining" and "liquidity mining") to address the above issues. MiniSwap provides three types of rewards. For each trade with transaction fee f ETH in MiniSwap, a number of MiniSwap tokens (called MINI) worth 2f ETH will be minted. A (parameterized) portion of the tokens are given to the trader, and the rest are distribued to the liqudity providers. The transaction fee (f ETH) is used to exchange MINI in the liquidity pool. 50% of the obtained MINI will be distributed to all MINI holders, and the other 50% will be destroyed. In this way, both traders and liquidity providers are incentivized to join the ecosystem.
Recall that with FCoin, there is a problem when all coins are minted. MiniSwap has an upper bound (of 500,000 tokens) on the number of tokens can be created every day, and this limit reduces every month until a point where the limit (18,000 tokens) remains unchanged. This guarantees the sustainability of the system as the mining process can last for 100 years. The parameterized ratio of tokens as the reward to the trader and liquidity provider can also strengthen sustainability. It enables the system to dynamically balance the incentive of different parties in the system to make it more sustainable.
Overall, the MiniSwap hybrid model has taken the benefit of both "trans-fee mining" model and "liquidity mining" model, while eliminated the potential concerns. Formally defining and analyzing these models, e.g. through the game-theoretic approach [24], would be an interesting direction.

Bitcoin ROI Increases With 3,500% Compared To Traditional Assets Amid Bullish Lookout

The Return-On-Investment For Bitcoin Surpasses The Performance Of Traditional Assets 70 Times In Times When BTC Is Anticipated To Pass The $10,000 Line
Blockchain analyst Justinas Baltrusaitis stated that Bitcoin’s investment returns from June 26, 2015, to June 26, 2020, have increased with over 3,500%, which outperforms the traditional market performance over seventy times.
Baltrusaitis published his report on Buy Shares, citing that the biggest cryptocurrency to date managed to gain over 70 times the performance of major indices like Dow Jones, S&P 500, Nikkei, Nasdaq, and Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 (FTSE 100).
“During the five-year span of the report, Bitcoin recorded a 3,456.98% return on investment. In June 2015, the price per Bitcoin sat at $257.06, while five years later it rose to $,143.58. On the other hand, major indices marked an average ROI value of 49.27%”, Baltrusaitis noted.
Source: Buyshares
For instance, FTSE 100 stayed in red, with a 6.96% ROI decline, while Nikkei rose with 11.94%, Dow Jones marked a 42.16% ROI increase, S&P 500 is slightly in front of Dow Jones with 46.23%. Nasdaq marked the highest five-year ROI, with 96.77%.
Baltrusaitis clarified that ROI is calculated with a base price when crypto holders bought Bitcoin, compared to current prices. Any Bitcoin purchases before December 2017 should see massive ROI gains.” Baltrusaitis added.
According to the crypto analyst, regulations and the recent coronavirus pandemic may have impacted the ROI scores. Also, Baltrusaitis emphasized on how users now perceive Bitcoin “as a store of value, rather than a speculative asset, especially amid the most recent stock market crash.
“Over the past five years, Bitcoin faced increasing popularity, mostly due to its maiden cryptocurrency status in the eyes of crypto newcomers. These factors largely contributed to Bitcoin’s high return on investment. However, the ROI comes despite the widespread opinion Bitcoin and crypto holding involve a high degree of risk.” Baltrusaitis concluded.
On the other hand, as CryptoBrowser reported, there is a substantial correlation between the prices of Bitcoin and traditional stock markets in the face of the S&P 500. Any price volatility in the traditional sector may cause Bitcoin’s price to peak or dip, just like in the March market wipeout.
Source: CryptoBrowser
Meanwhile, Bitcoin bulls still stay shy of pushing, as the price per BTC stays around $9,200, which is below its 20-day Moving Average. If bulls are to to flip the $9,200–$9,500 resistance zone this could clear the path for Bitcoin to reach $10,000. The current situation, however, implies that if Bitcoin can’t support a close of over $10,400, its price may tumble to the $8,800 support zone.

Ways to Buy Bitcoin with ACH

Ways to Buy Bitcoin with ACH

ACH is one of the fastest and cheapest ways to transfer money inside the US. In this post, I’ll cover the different Bitcoin exchanges that accept ACH transfers in order to buy Bitcoin from 3 Ways to Buy Bitcoin with ACH Instantly. Here you can see further details https://www.smartbitcoininvestments.com/buy-bitcoin-with-ach-transfe.
Buy Bitcoin with ACH Summary
ACH allows for faster and cheaper transfers than a traditional wire transfer. There are 3 popular options for buying Bitcoins with ACH – eToro, Coinbase and Gemini. The fastest and cheapest option would be eToro, however, you will not be able to withdraw your coins (only sell them back to USD).
If you want to buy actual Bitcoins with ACH use Coinbase:
· Go to Coinbase and sign up
· Verify your account
· Click on “Buy/Sell”
· Choose the amount to buy
· Choose ACH transfer
That’s how to buy Bitcoin with ACH in a nutshell. If you want a detailed review about the benefits of ACH and exchanges that accept it keep on reading, here’s what I’ll cover:
Why use ACH?
ACH (Automated Clearing House) is an electronic funds-transfer system that is used for payments inside the U.S. The ACH is run by the National Automated Clearing House Association (NACHA). Recent rule changes are enabling most credit and debit transactions made through the ACH to clear on the same business day.
When you use a wire transfer it can take several days for it to show up on an exchange. Alternatively, if you use an instant payment method like a credit card you usually end up paying a hefty amount in fees. ACH allows you the speedy transactions at the cost of a wire transfer.
2.Options for Buying Bitcoin with ACH
eToro
eToro is a trading platform that allows users to easily start buying and selling Bitcoins. They recently opened up their services to over 30 states around the US and are accepting ACH transfers.
The main difference between eToro and other exchanges is that deposits and withdrawals can be done with USD only. In other words, you can’t withdraw the Bitcoins you buy, only speculate on their price and sell them for USD.
There are no deposit fees for ACH transfers with eToro. You can read my eToro review for a complete overview of what eToro offers (including which countries it supports).
Coinbase and Coinbase Pro
Coinbase, established in 2012, is one of the oldest exchanges around. Coinbase is a brokerage service that is more suitable for beginners but it also has a trading platform called Coinbase Pro for more experienced traders.
With Coinbase, ACH transfers are completely free of deposit fees (unlike wire transfers). The transfer typically takes 3-5 business days (which may be as many as 7-10 calendar days, depending on the timing of weekends and other bank holidays) to complete after initiating a purchase. You may see the funds immediately debited from your bank account when you initiate the transfer, but the funds will not be transferred to your wallet until your payment has finished moving between the banks and clears in Coinbase’s bank account.
Gemini
Gemini, established in 2015 by Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss is one of the leading exchanges for buying Bitcoins in the US.
ACH transfers are completely free of deposit fees on Gemini. Although your bank balance may show your funds have left sooner, it typically takes at least 4-5 business days for a bank to communicate this to Gemini.
3. Conclusion
While at the moment the range of options for buying Bitcoin with ACH is a bit limited I’m sure that as more exchanges expand into the US they will also support ACH transfers.
For now, the exchanges listed above should give you a good enough solution as all of them are reputable and well-established exchanges.

I really wanted to buy bitcoin in 2015 and hold for a long time. But did not know how to do it
, since I learned about Bitcoin on television. And I really wanted to buy for $ 270
, but didn’t know how to do it, since there weren’t those who could help to do it.
Then I started buying bitcoins in 2017 in the fall. I wanted to get rich and hold for a long time
This asset, because I think this asset is a very unique and well-known means of exchange
, since no state bank makes international transfers such as bitcoin
, I highly respect this creation and consider it very important and valuable. This asset is the best that came up
for money transfers. I wanted to buy a car, rent out several apartments, as well
create a business. (Buy and open a fishing store, as well as a fishing workshop
bait, as well as rent a lake to grow fish there: carp, grass carp, tench, silver carp and crucian carp)
Then, I started trading with this tool, I did pretty well, but then
started to lose money with margin, and strong pressure from manipulators and speculators began to
deceive the course of movement of the price of bitcoin. In the end, I started taking loans that
to be able to earn and repay debts. I really wanted to be a long-term investor of this asset
but so much manipulation here is dangerous. At the moment I need 2 BTC to calculate
with debts and a small part to leave for long-term storage. I very much
I’m in debt, and I never wanted to be indebted, and I can’t take a big loan at the moment.
If someone can help me, I will give the money back in 6 months. I ask for a loan. If someone can
help me, help me please. I live in Russia, and there is no such opportunity here now
make money. Moreover, quarantine, we are not given cash assistance here. I beg you to help me!

Introduction to Cryptocurrencies: USDT, the most popular stable coin

Introduction to Cryptocurrencies: USDT, the most popular stable coin
Written by the CoinEx Institution, this series of jocular and easy to understand articles will show you everything you need to know about major cryptocurrencies, making you fully prepared before jumping into crypto!
Many novices of cryptocurrencies may feel confused with the obscure difference between USDT and USD at first . Different as they are, there remain some relations. To some extent, the name USDT is like a biased belief implanted in the minds of novices.

https://preview.redd.it/nqp97earybt41.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=84e70cc382389d21e4647b98605f3eabee06936d
USDT (Tether USD), known as Tether, is a token based on the stable value currency US dollar (USD), launched by Tether. In other words, it serves as a currency to replace the US dollar in digital currency trading platforms. (With 1USDT = 1USD, users can exchange USDT for USD at a rate of 1: 1 at any time)
USDT is not a new token It was launched for trading in 2015, and the world-renowned digital asset trading service platform CoinEx supports USDT trading pairs. There are extensive concerns about how to exchange tokens into fiat currencies after the introduction of cryptocurrency trading. USDT has provided part of the solution, and thus has been highly praised by many investors.
In the white paper “Tether: Fiat currencies on the Bitcoin blockchain”, Tether defines USDT as a digital currency pegged to fiat currencies. All Tethers are are initially issued as tokens on the BTC blockchain through the Omni Layer protocol, at a pegged exchange rate of 1:1 against the USD. After launching USDT, Tether strictly adheres to the 1:1 reserve guarantee, which means that for every issued USDT token , its bank account will have 1 USD funding guarantee.
Many people are fond of USDT precisely because of its specific characteristics. In recent years, it remains one of the most popular stablecoins, with a market share of nearly 3 billion US dollars, leaving behind such stablecoins as USDC, Gemini Dollars and JPM Coin
USDT's creator, Tether, is one of the top five digital currency companies by cash flow. They earn 3-5% profit from the $2 billion offered by the users around the world, almost without any operating costs. (This is really cool)
USDT is issued and traded through the Omni (formerly known as Mastercoin) protocol, which is a 2.0 currency based on the Bitcoin blockchain. Transaction confirmation and other parameters of USDT are consistent with those of BTC. Users can transfer USD to the bank account provided by Tether through SWIFT, or get USDT through the exchange. Of course, they can also buy USDT with BTC in the exchange. In short, it is quick and easy!
Unlike other digital currencies, USDT boasts some great features:
1.Intuitive
USDT is equal to the US dollar, with 1 USDT = 1 US dollar. Each currency = how much USDT, which is equal to how many US dollars its unit price is.
2.Stable
As Tether is backed by fiat currencies, users can still trade on the blockchain asset market without being affected by the price fluctuations of most blockchain assets.
3.Transparent
Tether's issuing company, Tether, claims that its fiat currency storage account has regular audits to ensure that each USDT in circulation is backed up by one US dollar. The storage account status is public and can be queried at any time. In addition, all Tether transaction records will be published on the public chain.
4. Low transaction fees
There is no fee for transactions between Tether accounts or between wallets where Tether is stored. Conversion from USDT to a fiat currency requires the transaction fee.
Tether has been frank about the risks of USDT in the white paperAlthough Tether is a decentralized digital currency, Tether company is not that decentralized .. As a centralized depositor of all the assets, the company also faces possibilities of bankruptcy, freezing funds and fund running; what’s more, the re-centralization may also paralyze the entire system. To put it simple: coin speculation could be risky and investors need to be cautious. Such honest companies are hard to find.
Yet in March 2019, Tether changed its terms of service: the USDT's endorsement altered to 75% USD anchorage and 25% iFinex stock-collateral loans. . In April of the same year, Tether issued an additional 640 million USDT, also pushing itself to the forefront.

USDT (Tether USD), known as Tether, is a token based on the stable value currency US dollar (USD), launched by Tether. In other words, it serves as a currency to replace the US dollar in digital currency trading platforms. (With 1USDT = 1USD, users can exchange USDT for USD at a rate of 1: 1 at any time)
USDT is not a new token It was launched for trading in 2015 and the world-renowned digital asset trading service platform CoinEx supports USDT trading pairs.
USDT’s creator, Tether, is one of the top five digital currency companies by cash flow. They earn 3–5% profit from the $2 billion offered by the users around the world, almost without any operating costs.
Tether’s issuing company, Tether, claims that its fiat currency storage account has regular audits to ensure that each USDT in circulation is backed up by one US dollar. The storage account status is public and can be queried at any time. In addition, all Tether transaction records will be published on the public chain.
Yet in March 2019, Tether changed its terms of service: the USDT’s endorsement altered to 75% USD anchorage and 25% iFinex stock-collateral loans. . In April of the same year, Tether issued an additional 640 million USDT, also pushing itself to the forefront.

This seat is occupied.

I’ve been in the ETH community since the very beginning. Hell, since before there even was a community. Pre pre-sale. I was around for the rise and fall of Mt.Gox, Bitcoinica, Havelock Investments, BTCT, Trenton Shavers, and the origination of ‘HODL’. I quit a lucrative job in late 2013 to work at a bitcoin startup, and in 2015 I made a personal transition from BTC to ETH and have been here since. I’m as much of a True Believer as you’re likely to find.
I’m writing this to share my view on where I see this space going and why, like the title alludes, I refuse to give up my seat on this rocket.
After my "lightbulb moment" with the blockchain, I had a simple thesis: given what I saw as the foundations of the technology, it seemed likely that this experiment was going to have a binary outcome: either it was foundational, earth-shaking tech worth untold sums, or it was mostly nonsense. And I resolved to seeing one of those two ends. I think the curious child in me wanted to see what happened when the ignition button was pushed. Whether that resulted in a detonation on the launchpad or a liftoff into orbit. Whatever was going to happen, I’d be there.
So that’s what I’ve done. And will continue to do. That’s not to say I haven’t taken profits, I have - but mostly to salvage some semblance of responsibility as I saw the portion of my net worth held in magic internet money grow. Not because I lost confidence in the technology or its potential. Broadly speaking though, I don't believe we're close to seeing the complete fallout from pushing that button. The reaction is still in-progress and will take years to complete.
As I’ve watched this industry grow, and contract, it remains clear that the genie isn’t going back in the bottle. Crypto truly is a brain virus. Once educated, people understand the value of a scarce, programmable, permissionless, non-sovereign asset and I submit society won’t stop seeing value in this. Now, I believe there's ample evidence to suggest that speculative markets move in cycles. And having been through the peaks and valleys of previous crypto cycles, I am confident we’re in a valley. I’m also confident there will be a future peak. The market is utterly manic, for better or worse.
So I see that a 2017 Ethereum — when app/protocol composability was pure theory, there were no DeFi products whatsoever, enterprise interest was cursory, and the largest, most public demonstration of the tech was collectible digital cats — had people tripping over themselves trying to buy at prices almost 10x higher than they are today. I can’t help but think: if the 2017 fundamentals provided enough of a platform to support the speculative rise we saw to peak prices, what will it look like when the price gets out ahead of current fundamentals? Where we’re in the midst of a Cambrian Explosion of composable apps/protocols, a serious (and growing) portion of total supply locked in DeFi, PoS right around the corner poised to gobble up even more supply, more money legos, more devs, more mindshare. We are in an entirely different realm where fundamentals are concerned.
Crypto peaked in 2017 at shy of $1T. If you don’t think the story so far points to crypto being a multi-trillion dollar asset class in the future, I’m not sure what story you’ve been reading. In comparison, the Dotcom bubble brought peak valuations to $6-7T (inflation adjusted.) This all in a silo’d market where the primary participants were those with access to US equities and early stage investment opportunities. Crypto is global. It’s unrestricted and has no minimums. And it has multiple narratives, which are ultimately additive, that all command their own monetary premium. The SoV aspect is independent from the need to pay for contract execution, yet both work in concert driving demand.
Unless the genie does retreat back into the bottle, I believe we will see prices move out in front of fundamentals yet again. Just like in 2011, 2013, and 2017. Thoughtful people are understandably reluctant to throw-in with what seem like pipe dream valuations. They sound too good to be true. Naive, even. I’ll be the first to admit, talking about returns using an ‘x’ instead of a ‘%’ should always be met with skepticism. But there are two factors at play which I feel are under-appreciated that can (and will) legitimately drive returns of those magnitudes:
Liquidity and reflexivity.
In comparison to other financial markets, crypto markets are extremely illiquid. Not necessarily for retail investors who can move a few hundred thousand around with minimal price slippage, but for the sovereign wealth funds, endowments, pension funds — aka Institutional Money™, it’s a different story. A lot of people talk about how crypto will only rise once institutional money arrives. The reality is that crypto needs to grow in order for institutional money to arrive. This transition from illiquid to liquid is a one-way street and will continue to be responsible for profound price moves as illiquidity is the primary reason crypto prices move as intensely as they do. Sellers are always trying to get the most value for their assets, so if you want Asset X right this minute, you’re going to pay out the nose for it if there isn't sufficient supply when you want it. And having that short time preference leads me to...
Reflexivity, which is especially pronounced in this industry because the two driving components, sentiment and trading based on that sentiment, now both move instantaneously. It’s like this cartoon, but everything moves at the speed of light. Once sentiment changes (which will inevitably happen if you believe in market cycles), the air will get sucked out of the room at a blistering pace. This is where FOMO really ramps up and it grips everyone from fund managers to middle-schoolers. Global fund managers to global middle-schoolers. The result is light-speed FOMO mixed with light-speed trading of an illiquid underlying asset, aka the perfect recipe for face-melting price moves.
Long story short, I think crypto is a gift to this generation. Do with this gift what you will. But when the music stops and the sentiment shifts, I hope you've found your seat. They'll go in a hurry.

The exponential growth in the crypto market and our vision

The exponential growth in the crypto market and our vision
Starting 2009 and absolutely zero, bitcoin went through and survived a baptism of fire. It was attacked and declared dead hundreds of times, yet each time rose from the ashes and reached new highs, peaking at tens of thousands US dollars in 2017. The unprecedented growth and born greed rooted deeply in humanity induced fickle speculation, short-termism, and pump-and-dumps, which effectively imposes a leverage on the entire market and magnifies all price movements. This is largely the reason all cryptos suffer from supreme volatility.
Nevertheless, we as a professional quantitative team in the stock and crypto markets saw abundant investment opportunities amid noisy data with conventional research tools, including but not limited to factor analysis and fundamental valuation. Quantitative research methodologies continue to offer stable returns and strong predictability in our out-of-sample tests and live trading, which is consistent with our backtest result that dates back to 2015.

From an Elliott Wave perspective, two scenarios are under consideration at this inflection point: a continuing Bull Scenario or a Bear Scenario.
In either scenario, the Elliott Wave model proposes a five wave structure, consisting of: three advancing bull market waves, interwoven with two declining bear market waves. Overlaying this model onto Bitcoin suggests:
Wave-1: the first bull market wave 2010-2013 (1219 days), followed by; Wave-2: the first bear market wave 2013-2015 (426 days), followed by; Wave-3: the second bull market wave 2015-2018 (1065 days), followed by; Wave-4: the second bear market wave 2018-2019 (363 days), followed by; Wave-5: the third and final bull market wave 2019-?
—BLX: https://i.imgur.com/iGXd6tX.png
The five aforementioned have been considered as PRIMARY degree waves —such waves elapse the course of a few months to a couple of years. Each PRIMARY degree wave is constituted of five INTERMEDIATE degree waves; and in turn, so forth into smaller degree fractals.
The Bull Scenario suggests Wave-5 is still underway, with subdividing and extending waves headed for new all-time highs.
The Bear Scenario suggests Wave-5 completed at the 26-JUN-2019 high as a truncated fifth wave failure, and a bear market is underway.
Bull Scenario
The bullish scenario suggests a continuing bull market is underway. PRIMARY[5] wave started from the 06-FEB-2019 low, and has completed its first parabolic uptrend labelled as INTERMEDIATE(1) wave at the 26-JUN-2019 high.
—BTC: https://i.imgur.com/KYg0V4j.png
INTERMEDIATE(2) wave pullback started at the 26-JUN-2019 high, and retraced an almost Fibonacci 61.8% thus far of the 2019 bull market, into the 23-OCT-2019 low.
This 4-month decline had initially appeared to have completed an INTERMEDIATE(2) wave pullback when the market suddenly spiked and surged over 40% within a day —attributed to news of Chinese leader Xi Jinping reportedly stating China should “seize the opportunity” offered by blockchain. The surge was the third largest 24-hour price gain in Bitcoin's history.
However, since the spike high on 26-OCT-2019, the market has steadily sold-off and now returned back to the 23-OCT-2019 low; and hence, erasing the entire late OCT surge. The surge is now being considered as a B-wave as part of an ongoing INTERMEDIATE(2) wave pullback. In hindsight, it ought to have been obvious this Thanksgiving Turkey isn’t cooked yet:
“B waves are phonies. They are sucker plays, bull traps, speculators' paradise, orgies of odd-lotter mentality or expressions of dumb institutional complacency (or both). They often involve a focus on a narrow list of stocks, are often ‘unconfirmed’ by other averages, are rarely technically strong, and are virtually always doomed to complete retracement by wave C. If the analyst can easily say to himself, ‘There is something wrong with this market,’ chances are it's a B wave.” —Elliott Wave Principle Key to Market Behavior; A.J. Frost, Robert Prechter.
From the B-wave high set on 26-OCT-2019, C-wave of INTERMEDIATE(2) wave pullback has been underway and is expected to conclude at the following Fibonacci support zones, using BITSTAMP:
@7230: 61.8% Fibonacci retracement from 15-DEC-2018 to 26-JUN-2019. [AVG] @5425: 78.6% Fibonacci retracement from 15-DEC-2018 to 26-JUN-2019. [MAX] @4350: 88.6% Fibonacci retracement from 15-DEC-2018 to 26-JUN-2019. [WARNING: Bull Market Terminated?]
In addition to the aforementioned support zones, the following additional midway Fibonacci zones can be sought as support for this current INTERMEDIATE(2) decline, using BITSTAMP:
@7055: Wave-C = Wave-A * 0.500 @6280: Wave-C = Wave-A * 0.618 @5170: Wave-C = Wave-A * 0.786
Summary of support zones, using BITSTAMP: 7230, 7055, 6280, 5425, 5170, 4350
At time of writing, price is currently meandering between the first two aforementioned support levels.
Once INTERMEDIATE(2) wave pullback has completed, a rising INTERMEDIATE(3) is expected to commence to resume the bull market. Such a wave is expected to unfold parabolically in nature, and at a minimum, meet or exceed the PRIMARY[3] high set on 17-DEC-2017. In both price and time, this wave is expected to be the longest of the PRIMARY[5] bull market.
Where the PRIMARY[5] bull market ends is open to interpretation and speculation.
From an Elliott Wave perspective: A common wave relationship guides the price of the fifth wave to be equal to; or extend a Fibonacci 1.618 or 2.618 times; the length from the low of the first wave through to the high of third wave; projected from the low of the fourth wave. This provides a conservative target of the current bull market to conclude between $22,912 or $35,127 or $54,892, calculated using the BraveNewCoin (BLX) index:
@22912: PRIMARY[5] = (PRIMARY[1] + PRIMARY[3]) * 1 @35127: PRIMARY[5] = (PRIMARY[1] + PRIMARY[3]) * 1.618 @54892: PRIMARY[5] = (PRIMARY[1] + PRIMARY[3]) * 2.618
—BLX: https://i.imgur.com/Mz3IHcD.png
As and when the waves develop and progress, and in the event of subdividing and extending waves, revised price targets shall be calculated with renewed projections.
Bear Scenario
The bear market scenario suggests the 2019 bull market was a short-lived affair, and PRIMARY[5] terminated as a failed-fifth truncated wave.
PRIMARY[5] started from the 15-DEC-2018 low and completed at the 26-JUN-2019 high. A Fibonacci 88.6% retracement of this uptrend is at 4350 BITSTAMP —a decline to this point ought to signal the goose is cooked and market has favoured to deflate.
—BTC: https://i.imgur.com/OZjUq7g.png
In this scenario, five completed PRIMARY degree waves have completed a CYCLE I wave structure. And now, a CYCLE II wave bear market pullback is underway and headed to break below the 2018 low.
—BLX: https://i.imgur.com/fzmPfhy.png
The wider cryptocurrency market in terms of the Altcoins currently appear to support the outlook of a bear market. So far in 2019, the price structure of majority Altcoins has seemingly unfolded in corrective A-B-C advancing waves, instead of impulsive 1-2-3-4-5 waves. This suggests the majority of Altcoins may be set to break their respective 2018 lows unless an intervention can be coordinated…
—ETH: https://i.imgur.com/AwmCpAh.png
Analysis is purely speculative, and projections are indicative of price & structure, not time. Happy Thanksgiving!

The biggest cryptocurrency thefts in the last 10 years

In this article, we will try to remember all the major theft of cryptocurrencies over the past 10 years.
1. Bitstamp $5.3 mln (BTC), January 4th, 2015
On January 4, 2015, the operational hot wallet of Bitstamp announced that it was hacked by an anonymous hacker and 19,000 Bitcoins (worth of $5 million) were lost.
The initiation of the attack fell on November 4, 2014. Then Damian Merlak, the CTO of the exchange, was offered free tickets to punk rock festival Punk Rock Holiday 2015 via Skype, knowing that Merlak is interested in such music and he plays in the band. To receive the tickets, he was asked to fill out a participant questionnaire by sending a file named “Punk Rock Holiday 2015 TICKET Form1.doc”. This file contained the VBA script. By opening the file, he downloaded the malware on his computer. Although Merlak did not suspect wrong and has opened the "application form", to any critical consequences, this did not open access to the funds of exchange.
The attackers, however, did not give up. The attack continued for five weeks, during which hackers presented themselves as journalists, then headhunters.
Finally, the attackers were lucky. On December 11, 2014, the infected word document was opened on his machine by Bitstamp system administrator Luka Kodric, who had access to the exchange wallet. The file came to the victim by email, allegedly on behalf of an employee of the Association for computer science, although in fact, as the investigation showed, the traces of the file lead deep into Tor. Hackers were not limited to just one letter. Skype attacker pretending to be an employee of the Association for computing machinery, convinced that his Frame though to make international honor society, which required some paperwork. Kodric believed.
By installing a Trojan on Kodriс's computer hackers were able to obtain direct access to the hot wallet of the exchange. The logs show that the attacker, under the account of Kodric, gained access to the server LNXSRVBTC, where he kept the wallet file.dat, and the DORNATA server where the password was stored. Then the servers were redirected to a certain IP address that belongs to one of the providers of Germany.
There are still no official reports of arrests in this case. Obviously, the case is complicated by the fact that the hackers are outside the UK, and the investigation has to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in other countries.
2. GateHub $9.5 mln (XRP), June 1th, 2019
Hackers have compromised nearly 100 XRP Ledger wallets on cryptocurrency wallet service GateHub. The incident was reported by GateHub in a preliminary statement on June 6.
XRP enthusiast Thomas Silkjær, who first noticed the suspicious activity, estimates that the hackers have stolen nearly $10 million worth of cryptocurrency (23,200,000 XRP), $5.5 million (13,100,000 XRP) of which has already been laundered through exchanges and mixer services.
GateHub notes that it is still conducting an investigation and therefore cannot publish any official findings. Also, GateHub advises victims to make complaints to the relevant authorities of their jurisdiction.
3. Tether, $30.9 mln (USDT), November 19th, 2017
Tether created a digital currency called "US tokens" (USDT) — they could be used to trade real goods using Bitcoin, Litecoin and Ether. By depositing $1 in Tether, the user received 1 USD, which can be converted back into fiat. On November 19, 2017, the attacker gained access to the main Tether wallet and withdrew $ 30.9 million in tokens. For the transaction, he used a Bitcoin address, which means that it was irreversible.
To fix the situation, Tether took action by which the hacker was unable to withdraw the stolen money to fiat or Bitcoin, but the panic led to a decrease in the value of Bitcoin.
4. Ethereum, $31 mln (ETH), July 20th, 2017
On July 20, 2017, the hacker transferred 153,037 Ethers to $31 million from three very large wallets owned by SwarmCity, Edgeless Casino and Eternity. Unknown fraudster managed to change the ownership of wallets, taking advantage of the vulnerability with multiple signatures.
First, the theft was noticed by the developers of SwarmCity.
Further events deserve a place in history: "white hackers" returned the stolen funds, and then protected other compromised accounts. They acted in the same way as criminals, who stole funds from vulnerable wallets — just not for themselves. And it all happened in less than a day.
5. Dao (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) $70 mln (ETH), June 18th, 2016
On June 18, 2016, members of the Ethereum community noticed that funds were being drained from the DAO and the overall ETH balance of the smart contract was going down. A total of 3.6 million Ether (worth around $70 million at the time) was drained by the hacker in the first few hours. The attack was possible because of an exploit found in the splitting function. The attackes withdrew Ether from the DAO smart contract multiple times using the same DAO Tokens. This was possible due to what is known as a recursive call exploit.
In this exploit, the attacker was able to "ask" the smart contract (DAO) to give the Ether back multiple times before the smart contract could update its own balance. There were two main faults that made this possible: the fact that when the DAO smart contract was created the coders did not take into account the possibility of a recursive call, and the fact that the smart contract first sent the ETH funds and then updated the internal token balance.
It's important to understand that this bug did not come from Ethereum itself, but from this one application that was built on Ethereum. The code written for the DAO had multiple bugs, and the recursive call exploit was one of them. Another way to look at this situation is to compare Ethereum to the Internet and any application based on Ethereum to a website: if a website is not working, it doesn't mean that the Internet is not working, it simply means that one website has a problem.
The hacker stopped draining the DAO for unknown reasons, even though they could have continued to do so.
The Ethereum community and team quickly took control of the situation and presented multiple proposals to deal with the exploit. In order to prevent the hacker from cashing in the Ether from his child DAO after the standard 28 days, a soft-fork was voted on and came very close to being introduced. A few hours before it was set to be released, a few members of the community found a bug with the implementation that opened a denial-of-service attack vector. This soft fork was designed to blacklist all the transactions made from the DAO.
6. NiceHash, 4736.42 (BTC), December 6th, 2017
NiceHash is a Slovenian cryptocurrency hash power broker with integrated marketplace that connects sellers of hashing power (miners) with buyers of hashing power using the sharing economy approach.
On December 6, 2017, the company's servers became the target of attack. At first, Reddit users reported that they could not access their funds and make transactions — when they tried to log in, they were shown a message about a service interruption. In the end, it became known that the service had undergone a major cyberattack and 4736,42 Bitcoins disappeared without a trace.
Despite heavy losses, NiceHash was able to continue working, but CEO and founder Marco Koval resigned, giving way to a new team. The company managed to maintain the trust of investors and began to strengthen the protection of its systems.
7. Mt.Gox, 850000 (BTC), June 19th, 2011
The Hacking Of Mt.Gox was one of the biggest Bitcoin thefts in history. It was the work of highly professional hackers using complex vulnerabilities.
A hacker (or a group of hackers) allegedly gained access to a computer owned by one of the auditors and used a security vulnerability to access Mt.Gox servers, then changed the nominal value of Bitcoin to 1 cent per coin.
Then they brought out about 2000 BTC. Some customers, without knowing it, conducted transactions at this low price, a total of 650 BTC, and despite the fact that the hacking hit the headlines around the world, no Bitcoin could be returned.
To increase investor confidence, the company has compensated all of the stolen coins, placed most of the remaining funds in offline storage, and the next couple of years was considered the most reliable Bitcoin exchanger in the world.
However, it was only an illusion of reliability.
The problems of the organization were much more serious, and the management probably did not even know about them.
CEO of Mt.Gox, Mark Karpeles, was originally a developer, but over time he stopped delving into technical details, basking in the rays of glory — because he created the world's largest platform for cryptocurrency exchange. At that time Mt.Gox handled over 70% of all Bitcoin transactions.
And, of course, there were those who wanted to take advantage of the technological weakness of the service. At some point, hackers made it so that Bitcoins could be bought at any price, and within minutes millions of dollars worth of coins were sold — mostly for pennies. World prices for Bitcoin stabilized in a few minutes, but it was too late.
As a result, Mt.Gox lost about 850,000 Bitcoins. The exchange had to declare bankruptcy, hundreds of thousands of people lost money, and the Japanese authorities arrested CEO Mark Karpeles for fraud. He pleaded not guilty and was subsequently released. In 2014, the authorities restored some of the Bitcoins remaining at the old addresses, but did not transfer them to the exchange, and created a trust to compensate for the losses of creditors.
8. Coincheck, $530 mln, January 26th, 2018
The sum was astonishing, and even surpassed the infamous Mt.Gox hack.
While Mt.Gox shortly filed for bankruptcy following the hack, Coincheck has surprisingly remained in business and was even recently approved as a licensed exchange by Japan’s Financial Services (FSA).
Coincheck was founded in 2014 in Japan and was one of the most popular cryptocurrency exchanges in the country. Offering a wide variety of digital assets including Bitcoin, Ether, LISK, and NEM, Coincheck was an emerging exchange that joined the Japan Blockchain Association.
Since Coincheck was founded it 2014, it was incidentally not subject to new exchange registration requirements with Japan’s FSA — who rolled out a framework after Mt. Gox –, and eventually was a contributing factor to its poor security standards that led to the hack.
On January 26th, 2018, Coincheck posted on their blog detailing that they were restricting NEM deposits and withdrawals, along with most other methods for buying or selling cryptocurrencies on the platform. Speculation arose that the exchange had been hacked, and the NEM developers issued a statement saying they were unaware of any technical glitches in the NEM protocol and any issues were a result of the exchange’s security.
Coincheck subsequently held a high-profile conference where they confirmed that hackers had absconded with 500 million NEM tokens that were then distributed to 19 different addresses on the network. Totaling roughly $530 million at the time — NEM was hovering around $1 then — the Coincheck hack was considered the largest theft in the industry’s history.
Coincheck was compelled to reveal some embarrassing details about their exchange’s security, mentioning how they stored all of the NEM in a single hot wallet and did not use the NEM multisignature contract security recommended by the developers.
Simultaneously, the NEM developers team had tagged all of the NEM stolen in the hack with a message identifying the funds as stolen so that other exchanges would not accept them. However, NEM announced they were ending their hunt for the stolen NEM for unspecified reasons several months later, and speculation persisted that hackers were close to cashing out the stolen funds on the dark web.
Mainstream media covered the hack extensively and compared it to similar failures by cryptocurrency exchanges in the past to meet adequate security standards. At the time, most media coverage of cryptocurrencies was centered on their obscure nature, dramatic volatility, and lack of security. Coincheck’s hack fueled that narrative considerably as the stolen sum was eye-popping and the cryptocurrency used — NEM — was unknown to most in the mainstream.
NEM depreciated rapidly following the hack, and the price fell even more throughout 2018, in line with the extended bear market in the broader industry. Currently, NEM is trading at approximately $0.07, a precipitous fall from ATH over $1.60 in early January.
The extent of the Coincheck hack was rivaled by only a few other hacks, notably the Mt.Gox hack. While nominally Coincheck is the largest hack in the industry’s history, the effects of Mt.Gox were significantly more impactful since the stolen funds consisted only of Bitcoin and caused a sustained market correction as well as an ongoing controversy with the stolen funds and founder. Moreover, Mt.Gox squandered 6% of the overall Bitcoin circulation at the time in a market that was much less mature than it is today.
Despite the fallout, Coincheck is now fully operational and registered with Japan’s FSA.
As practice shows, people make mistakes and these mistakes can cost a lot. Especially, when we talk about mad cryptoworld. Be careful and keep your private keys in a safe place.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5128394.msg53430396#msg53430396
Summary: Bitcoin remains in a bull market with an outlook to exceed the 2017 high. However, a price move below $5000 suggests Bitcoin is in a bear market, with price headed to break below the 2018 lows. The majority of Altcoins favour an extended bear market unless an intervention can be coordinated. The outlook for the stockmarket, in particular the USA, is extremely bullish.
—BLX: https://i.imgur.com/FOZu1mH.png
The five aforementioned have been considered as PRIMARY degree waves —such waves elapse the course of a few months to a couple of years. Each PRIMARY degree wave is constituted of five INTERMEDIATE degree waves; and in turn, so forth into smaller degree fractals.
The Bull Scenario suggests Wave-5 is still underway, with subdividing and extending waves headed for new all-time highs.
The Bear Scenario suggests Wave-5 completed at the 26-JUN-2019 high as a truncated fifth wave failure, and a bear market is underway. The majority of Altcoins favour an ongoing bear market.
—BTC: https://i.imgur.com/tw6ZguX.png
Since the 26-JUN-2019 high, INTERMEDIATE(2) wave pullback has been underway and has thus far declined 55% into the low of 18-DEC-2019.
The structure of INTERMEDIATE(2) wave decline has thus far unfolded as three A-B-C waves of MINOR degree as follows:
—Wave-A decline started at the high of 26-JUN-2019 and completed as a complex structure at the low of 23-OCT-2019.
—Wave-B bounce started at the low of 23-OCT-2019 when the market suddenly spiked and surged over 40% within a day —attributed to news of Chinese leader Xi Jinping reportedly stating China should “seize the opportunity” offered by blockchain. The surge was the third largest 24-hour price gain in Bitcoin's history and a simple structure completed at the high of 26-OCT-2019.
—Wave-C decline has been underway since the high of 26-OCT-2019. At the low of 18-DEC-2019, Wave-C reached a Fibonacci 0.618% of Wave-A in length on notable BITFINEX and COINBASE exchanges; in addition, created positive divergence of price against momentum indicators such as the Relative Strength Index on the daily timeframe.
Given the potential of a completed correction as described in the aforementioned A-B-C decline, the market has arrived at a juncture to consider the end of INTERMEDIATE(2) wave decline at the 18-DEC-2019 low.
To provide any credibility to this consideration, price is required to rise from the 18-DEC-2019 low and exceed the high of 29-NOV-2019. In addition, price Is required to unfold in five impulsive i-ii-iii-iv-v rising waves. Thus far as of Christmas Eve, price has risen in one wave from the 18-DEC-2019 low and is below the 29-NOV-2019 high.
Alternatively, the INTERMEDIATE(2) wave decline is still to further subdivide and extend lower. A decline below the 18-DEC-2019 low confirms an ongoing INTERMEDIATE(2) wave decline. The following Fibonacci-based levels may be sought as support zones to conclude the pullback; using COINBASE pricing:
@5431: 78.6% Fibonacci retracement of the entire INTERMEDIATE(1) wave from 15-DEC-2018 to 26-JUN-2019. @5374: MINOR C = MINOR A * 0.786 @4358: 88.6% Fibonacci retracement of the entire INTERMEDIATE(1) wave from 15-DEC-2018 to 26-JUN-2019. [WARNING: Bull Market Terminated?]
—BTC: https://i.imgur.com/6ORFqnV.png
Using the Greyscale Bitcoin Fund (GBTC) as a proxy to Bitcoin, the rise from the 18-DEC-2019 low thus far, as of Christmas Eve, appears corrective. Therefore, price action currently favours an ongoing decline:
—GBTC: https://i.imgur.com/W5TNedb.png
Once INTERMEDIATE(2) wave pullback has completed, a rising INTERMEDIATE(3) is expected to commence and resume the bull market.
@22912: PRIMARY[5] = (PRIMARY[1] + PRIMARY[3]) * 1 @35127: PRIMARY[5] = (PRIMARY[1] + PRIMARY[3]) * 1.618 @54892: PRIMARY[5] = (PRIMARY[1] + PRIMARY[3]) * 2.618
—BLX: https://i.imgur.com/PnMZf9x.png
As and when the waves develop and progress, and in the event of subdividing and extending waves, revised price targets shall be calculated with renewed projections.
Bear Scenario
The bear market scenario suggests the 2019 bull market was a short-lived affair, and PRIMARY[5] terminated as a failed-fifth truncated wave.
PRIMARY[5] started from the 15-DEC-2018 low and completed at the 26-JUN-2019 high. A Fibonacci 88.6% retracement of this uptrend is at 4350 COINBASE —a decline to this point ought to signal the market has favoured to deflate.
—BTC: https://i.imgur.com/sOefCp8.png
In this scenario, five completed PRIMARY degree waves have completed a CYCLE I wave structure. And now, a CYCLE II wave bear market pullback is underway and headed to break below the 2018 low.
—BLX: https://i.imgur.com/fJGOI7e.png
The wider cryptocurrency market in terms of the Altcoins currently appear to support the outlook of a bear market. So far in 2019, the price structure of majority Altcoins has seemingly unfolded in corrective A-B-C advancing waves, instead of impulsive 1-2-3-4-5 waves. This suggests the majority of Altcoins may be set to break their respective 2018 lows unless an intervention can be coordinated…

—LTC: https://i.imgur.com/OoZOuMa.png
—XRP: https://i.imgur.com/hNGFkpw.png
Stockmarket
The outlook for the major global equity stockmarkets, in particular the USA, is extremely bullish.
From the 2009 low of the great financial crises, the Dow Jones Industrial Average index has risen in four PRIMARY degree waves, with a fifth and final rising wave underway which began from the low of 2018.
In 2020, the stockmarket will be entering its 11th bull market year since the low of 2009. Fibonacci numbers next in sequence are 13, 21, 34. Therefore, the stockmarket isn’t likely to run into major headwinds until 2022; or until 2030 if the bull market extends to 21 years:

Since the Brexit vote in 2016, the UK FTSE100 has been directionless. With clarity now emerging on Brexit since the 12-DEC-2019 UK election, the FTSE100 is poised to resume a strong bull market:

European Investors are Renewing Their Interest in Gold

European investors are showing a heightened level of interest in gold. This trend reflects a turnaround in the status of gold as an asset in the world’s economy.
Before the 2008 financial crash, European central banks were net sellers of gold. Gold represented a bygone era: a barbaric relic without periodic yield that was fast falling out of favor with institutional investors.
Europe was undoubtedly the most advanced region in the world between the 11 than 20th centuries. Much of the continent had royal families that donned plenty of gold as a sign of status and wealth. As the continent modernized through the 20th century, the shift to paper money and more equal societies swept this order aside. Gold had the vestiges of this era, and by the 1990s, it seemed to be relegated to a fringe asset.
Fast forward a decade, and gold is once again popular with the high and mighty, as well as individual investors.
A 2019 statement on the website of the Dutch central bank, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), best shows the perspective shift in the past two decades. The Netherlands has raised its gold holdings to over 600 tons despite being a pretty modern economy.
The statement in part read:
“Shares, bonds, and other securities are not without risk, and prices can go down. But a bar of gold retains its value, even in times of crisis. That is why central banks, including DNB, have traditionally held considerable amounts of gold. Gold is the perfect piggy bank — it’s the anchor of trust for the financial system. If the system collapses, the gold stock can serve as a basis to build it up again. Gold bolsters confidence in the stability of the central bank’s balance sheet and creates a sense of security.”

A Sense of Realism

Central banks have a track record of cautious, balanced communication meant to prevent overreaction from the public. Therefore, it is somewhat surprising to see some European central banks giving gold a direct endorsement.
Many would associate these institutions with a conservative approach that appraises paper money and the stability of the status quo.
Hungary is another country where monetary policy is shifting toward gold. The country’s central bank (MNB) conducted its first gold purchases since 1986 last year.
To explain this move, MNB described its rationale as follows:
“In normal circumstances, gold has a confidence-building feature, i.e., it may play a stabilizing role and act as a major line of defense under extreme market conditions or in times of structural changes in the international financial system or deep geopolitical crises. In addition, gold continues to be one of the safest assets, which can be related to individual properties such as the limited supply of physical precious metal. This asset does not have a link to credit or counterparty risk, given that gold is not a claim on a specific counterparty or country.”
Interestingly, the features that made gold an old-school, boring asset in the 90s have made it extremely appealing today. European institutional investors are now increasingly appreciating this reality. In hindsight, the decision by the Bank of England to sell off large amounts of gold in the late 90s looks foolish now. A lot of European central banks shared this dismissive sentiment.

Reasons for the Renewed Interest in Gold

As the new millennium started, the European Union couldn’t be stronger. The Euro was a darling for investors, economies like Greece were still decent, and the region generally faced fewer geopolitical crises.
The 2008 financial meltdown was a devastating reality check for the region. Many countries, especially in Southern Europe, have never truly recovered from this crisis. In 2019, the region’s economy was still barely growing. Europe’s largest economy, Germany, just about managed to beat a recession.
This region is not immune to geopolitical crises either. The migrant crisis in the aftermath of the Syrian civil war threatened to tear Europe apart, not only from a political standpoint but also economically.
Individualistic approaches to national economies are back in fashion. Therefore, European central banks are following recent trends from the likes of Russia, Turkey, and Kazakhstan in shoring up their gold reserves.
Moreover, Europe and most of the Western world is in a zero to negative interest era. With such circumstances prevailing, investors are looking to gold as a store of value.
Central banks have pushed low-interest policies for a decade now, flooding the global economy with cheap fiat money. Inevitably, investors’ trust in cash-backed investments dissipates with time because there is no timeline of departure for this policy.
Even ordinary investors seem to be catching on. Germany, for instance, is reportedly looking to lower the anonymous purchase limit for gold, from €10,000 to €2,000. Lowering the limit comes under the guise of anti money-laundering.
Such measures are a response to the increasing appetite for the precious metal, even among regular investors. Gold is an attractive asset to hedge against inflation. This quality is something useful in such uncertain times, hence the higher demand.

A Reflection of Global Trends

Despite the significance of this turnaround, Europe is relatively late to the party. Central banks across the world have been rapidly increasing their gold reserves, especially in the latter part of the previous decade.
In the past couple of years, central banks have bought gold at rates unseen since the end of the US gold standard in 1971. Countries like Russia lead the onslaught, with demand likely to remain solid for the foreseeable future.
Interestingly, Hungary and Poland feature prominently among the largest purchasers. Global data from the World Gold Council spanning the first three quarters of 2019 indicates that last year will likely break records in annual central bank gold purchases.
Gold provides an opportunity for countries with stuttering currencies like Russia to hedge against inflation. The yellow metal has a standard price in international markets and presents an opportunity to shore up against further currency slides. Gold’s standing as a safe-haven asset among central banks has never been higher in recent times. For investors, it is a viable asset for portfolio diversification.
As a regional bloc, European central banks already have the highest amount of gold reserves worldwide, although the USA leads among individual countries by some distance. This positioning puts into perspective the importance of Europe to global gold trading. With the region looking to become one with a robust demand for gold, this could boost prices tremendously.
Investor interest in gold-related products like ETFs is equally strong. Inflows into gold-backed ETFs since the end of 2015 have been on the rise. ETFs are the primary tool for stock market gold exposure, and their popularity is a reflection of investor sentiment.
Even in this asset class, European investors are increasingly active with assets under management in European gold ETFs rising to 1,134 tons by the end of 2018.

The Role of Private Investors

In a zero or negative interest rate regime, and fears of a European recession and weaker European stocks relative to the American market, individual investors are showing high interest in gold. In Switzerland, gold ranks second only to real estate in terms of which asset ordinary people consider purchasing. Gold offers security and stability, which don’t seem so sure in a stuttering Europe.
The behavior of private gold investors points at individuals looking for such stability. Short-term speculation with the bull gold market is not a huge factor, although it may provide an incentive for some. Prominent investors like Ray Dalio suggest that gold may maintain its bull run for the rest of the year.
In summary, Europe is fast catching on to the new gold rush. With a struggling economy and geopolitical crises, gold popularity in this market is a logical result. The yellow metal has proven its mettle many times over during financial turmoil. Gold is making a strong comeback in this region not only among central banks but also private investors.

You Asked for It: Fundamental Reasons for Crypto to Explode

No triangles or memes here but if we look at the graph that everyone knows, https://i.imgur.com/y2oqsV8.png, I can tell you why I believe we are in the bear trap phase, and not the despair phase.

Smart Money: People like you, me, friends/family we convinced to get in, whales (rich trust fund kids/hedge funds) that were "smart" to realize the potential of cryptos while Joe Shmo is just hearing of it and thinks its a scam or just too risky.

Institutional Investors: The same week that bitcoin futures was launched is when the price of bitcoin popped and it all went downhill from there, putting us into the bear trap. We are still in the institutional phase and we just had a huge announcement to get us out of the bear trap, that being Fidelity is providing a platform for institutional investors. SEC rules require institutional investors to maintain their assets with a third-party “qualified custodian”. Before Fidelity, the only place that had this was coinbase and that was launched last summer, but no large institution is going to want to use coinbase, just type in coinbase in google and you will hear countless nightmare scenarios (flash crashes, servers crashing during the most crucial trading times, security issues, locked accounts, you name it). Just imagine how difficult it would be for an institution, let alone their clients, to trust Coinbase with millions if not billions of their dollars. Hell you can't even talk to someone over the phone with Coinbase (except for "unauthorized access to your account"). Fidelity is providing a trustful platform for them (tons already use fidelty, its the fifth largest investment company in the world and if its coming here, you can bet its coming to other places like vanguard and blackrock (experts are saying this as well). Another reason they wouldn't want to use Coinbase is for liquidity. Meaning they don't want to have their money in two different places. If they put it in Coinbase, they can only buy crypto with it, well these guys like to move their money around a lot and don't want to be tied to one type of asset. If everything is in one account they can do as they please.

Public Phase: This is when crypto trading comes to places that most people already have access to like Charles Schwab, E-trade, fidelity (retail), and currently robinhood (after they just removed the waiting list in January 2019. Joe Shmo would be much more comfortable buying something from a place he has been using for years but also not having transfer money out of his investment account into another account (bigger deal than you think, its a big step transferring money into coinbase and a much bigger step putting money back into Coinbase after you removed it from there).

China (not a significant reason and pretty speculative): Their HSI stock market index has been only increased 5% since 2015. The nasdaq 100 has increased by 65% in the same time. Investors in China are growing impatient and irritated by the stagnant market. To combat this (and to protect their money from their government) they have been buying up properties like crazy in the US and Canada over the past few years. However the housing market has also been stagnate for the past year. Couple this with the year of the pig (hear me out). The Chinese are VERY superstitious, ask any Chinese person that is actually from China. They don't even have 13th floors in their buildings because its an unlucky number (they just skip that floor number, you would be called stupid and insane here if you did that), they also don't want a house with the front door facing the street because then their "money will run away", and for 8888 yuan ($1,300) was a major resistance level for Bitcoin because the number 8 is considered their lucky number and they would sell at this price. The year of the pig symbolizes a year that brings great wealth, they will use this as a reason to invest (call me crazy, I don't care), but remember that the Chinese have 50% of the money in the world. We also know that China also has 80% of the bitcoin mining pools, and more importantly that 20% of the cypto volume comes from China.

Japan: Their largest bank, MUFG, 5th largest in the world, is developing a cryptocurrency that can handle a million transactions a second. They need to have this in time for the 2020 Summer Olympics because Japan's current financial system won't be able to handle the volume of transactions they expect during the event. Also its a solution to the government's plan to go cashless by 2025. We know that 40% of the crypto trading volume comes from Japan and so if Japan replaces cash with cryptos or even just becomes part of the economy, well then we know what this means.

Lastly here is a technical analysis showing that we have hit bottom because BTC used the 200 moving week average as a support (couldn't show this with ETH because it hasn't been around long enough but we know ETH and BTC are correlated).

If we really are in a bear trap, I speculate the price could go to $4,200 by the end of 2020.

Don't invest recklessly

I posted about this just a few months ago, but I feel that it's necessary to repeat. The Bitcoin price is on an unbelievably ridiculous upswing which is rather likely to be a bubble. If you're trying to get rich quick by dumping your retirement funds into BTC at $10k, then your "investment strategy" is not much better than someone betting everything on a game of roulette. High-risk-high-reward investing is not necessarily bad, but you have to seriously look at your thought process to make sure that you're not:
It is entirely possible that the massive price increase of the last year is based on lasting fundamentals. In addition to things like the fairly recent subsidy halving, the defeat of B2X, etc., the world fiat-based economy is in many ways on very shaky ground, and getting worse all the time. There are many good reasons why BTC should have a larger market cap than every fiat currency combined. It's even possible that the price will increase quite a bit more from now. But for goodness sake, don't think that Bitcoin is the first-ever infinite-money generator that will continue to rise exponentially forever (in real terms). I can nearly guarantee that there will be a large and long-lasting crash/downturn at some point. Maybe it will be $10k to $5k, maybe it will be $50k to $30k, who knows. But if you're thinking for example that the current $5k+ price range is absolutely secure after only existing for a few months, then you're traveling blind through very dangerous territory.
Some points to consider:
I'm not telling you to buy or sell, and I'm not giving financial advice here. I'm just urging everyone to think rationally, not emotionally or recklessly.
