These 7 Baby Steps will show you how to buy bitcoin, build wealth and take control of your money for good. We recommend having a household budget and emergency fund before embarking on the bitcoin baby steps. BABY STEP 1: Buy a small amount of bitcoin ($100 or so). Buying bitcoin is easy. Tons of apps are available. After you buy, just leave your bitcoin on the app. You will use this same app later if you wish to sell. Great 👍🏼 now you’ve got your first bit of bitcoin! BABY STEP 2: Buy more bitcoin. Now that you’re comfortable buying, it’s time to start stacking sats. Sats are fractions of bitcoins. You want to stack as many as possible. But only stack what you’re comfortable not touching for 5+ years. Bitcoin is a long term investment. BABY STEP 3: Purchase a hardware wallet. Once you have $1,000 or more in bitcoin. It's time to get serious about your bitcoin security by taking your coins off the app. Purchase a hardware wallet. These devices store bitcoin offline (cold storage) so they are safe from hackers BABY STEP 4: Take control of your sats (bitcoin). Up until now you’ve only had an iou, time to get your bitcoins off the app and send to your hardware wallet. Send a small transaction ($10) in order to get comfortable making transactions. Then send the rest of your sats. BABY STEP 5: Learn more about bitcoin. As you wait for the price to rise, learn a little more about bitcoin. There are so many high quality podcasts, books, articles etc... This isn’t like school. Bitcoin content sparks your imagination and makes you excited. BABY STEP 6: Multisig service. Bitcoin can rise pretty fast. You may find yourself in a position where suddenly your $1,000 is now 100k. Multisig provides an extra level of security by splitting access to your bitcoin amongst multiple hardware wallets. We like @CasaHODL. BABY STEP 7: Run a full node. Full node sounds scary and confusing. But a full node is just a copy of the bitcoin blockchain that you will use to receive and send transactions. You can do this by downloading the blockchain on your laptop, or you can buy a node pre-synced. These baby steps are meant as a starting point and a touchstone. You’ll do steps 1 and 2 at the same time. Steps 3 and 4 at the same time and steps 5, 6 and 7 all at the same time. Congratulations! 🎉 You’re now in a position to get rich as bitcoin continues to dominate.
We’re looking to make someone a millionaire. Could it be you? Quarantine may have placed some things at a halt, but we’re still operating as usual, so comment to enter! [Drawing Thread #54]
Depending on who you are, finals are either happening now or you’re done with them. With that being said, we’re still ending our year strong!
Introduction: Welcome to anyone and everyone coming from /popular. Quarantine has been making this subreddit more popular by the day, so thank you to everyone for supporting this. For those who aren't familiar:
Every month, we ask for comments for entry, and we pick one who represents our winner.
This process is completely random and verifiable, using the Bitcoin blockchain as a sophisticated die.
Following this, people then donate to the winner using a variety of mediums, and the winner would go on to be a "millionaire" (arguably, our definition of that term is pretty loose).
Also, I want to clarify on the situation with comments: you need to make only one top-level comment. You can reply as many times as you like. However! If you haven’t made a comment DIRECTLY to this post, you will not be counted. I’ve attached a helpful graphic visually clarifying the difference between a top-level comment and a reply right here: https://imgur.com/Si1VLX4 So once again, thank you for your support. The post lasts for 24 hours before getting locked, so make sure you place your comment before 7 PM ET. In addition, I will make a [Part 2] if we reach the limit, and changing some past precedent, I will extend comment collection by a full day. Let's make a millionaire! In Case You Missed It:
Our last winner, Ultima98, is currently accepting donations! Things have gone a bit rough for him, but that hasn’t stopped him from persevering, as he describes in his post. Donations will go to himself, to his local dog shelter, and among other recipients. If you would like to donate, click on the link here!
REQUIRED: Leave only one (1) top level comment in reply to this thread! (Replying to other comments will not qualify. You must be thirty days old or older to comment.)
A random user who commented will be chosen, and everyone donates a dollar to make a millionaire.
April 15 at 7:00 PM ET (epoch timestamp: 1586991600) is the cutoff for accounts. If you have created your account after this point, you are not eligible to enter and your submission will be disqualified automatically.
May 17 at 12:00 PM ET (epoch timestamp: 1589731200) will begin the process of selecting the winner. At this time, the [Draw] post will be online and start the process of waiting for the blockchain, in order to select the winner randomly and verifiably.
Changing how duplicates are handled: Starting this month, I’ll be changing how duplicates are handled. The TL;DR version is this: make absolute certain that you only left one top-level comment! Prior to this, I have set the comments to “FirstOnly”, meaning that if you have accidentally made more than one comment, you will be forgiven, and your first comment will count. This will not be the case anymore. Make sure that you checked your account and haven’t left any more comments than you should. From now on, if you have left more than one top-level comment on this post, your entry will be automatically removed! Other than that, if you do accidentally leave one and forget to remove it, make sure you enter next month!
May 17 at 12 PM ET (16 UTC), we will be picking our winner, and you won’t want to miss it. The post will be labeled [Draw], and one comment will be selected out of the many made here to make a winner! Remember, this is about generosity, making an impact, and uniting to make someone's life better. It takes three minutes to donate a bit to the winner, whether you're well off and want to donate a couple bucks, or going through tough times and can only donate a few coins. Every cent makes cents, and counts! If a lone $1 can get you an affordable utensil, then imagine the possibilities with $1,000,000. You can get a backpack, a farewell worth remembering, and pay for those pesky classes! A million dollars can make someone’s stay away from school. Spread the word: have your friends and family comment, post the link to your friendly-neighborhood social media network, and share it to anyone interested.
Let’s educate a millionaire!
All rise for this class. Take a stand, pencil in hand. How we’ve come so far.

So, last wipe, I thoroughly enjoyed the game. I struggled until I got to about level 35ish, but eventually I got my bitcoin farm going (not full 50 GPU) and my booze generator going, and I was making some decent rubles. I could buy decent gear, the scopes I wanted, the ammo I liked (which was rarely m995,7n37, or m61, btw). And then I could go in raid, do my quests, find items, kill players, take their stuff and leave. Or, I could die and lose all my gear, and it would sting, but not break me. But when I did raids, I almost ALWAYS stayed until <10 minutes remaining, sometimes even getting out with spare seconds left. Yes, by about level 45, I eventually started making more money than I could spend, but ONLY after 50 GPU's in the BC farm and booze generator combined. Now this wipe, instead of enjoying the raids, I'm getting frustrated trying to find progression halting items. Then, when I do find them, I'm STRONGLY encouraged to turtle up, hide until the coast is clear behind counters or in bushes, then extract at 10:01. I'm also having to buy expensive weapons like SVD's to finish quests, which I had to do last wipe too, but my rouble flow was much much higher. I can kill a 3 man squad, and make 200k, because their armor was zero'd out and too high cost to repair and their guns with all their fancy attachments are worth 75k. Or, I can die and lose about that much. There is no real risk/reward any more. Then, when I'm having a particularly bad day dying, I can't even lean back on looting stuff like factory keys and fuel conditioners now, AND WHAT LITTLE BIT OF FIR I SELL HAS ATROCIOUS FEES. I sold 3 packs of bolts for 14k ea and the fee was 12k. It's like BSG isn't even trying to micro adjust the game to dial back the ruble flow. Instead it's full on scorched earth. Only the people with the absolute best combat skills or the most time to rat around have the ability to make any decent money. On top of that, I'm level 33 and JUST got my last FIR flash drive. I have crashed against the rocks to the tune of MILLIONS trying to get a LEDX and 3 FIR graphics cards from Interchange, thanks to RNG. I can't even start Shooter Born In Heaven, and I would be 3/4 done with it by now if I had it 10 levels ago. I'm sure* 3/4 of the subreddit will come by to tell me to quit crying, git gud, it's hardcore, roubles are easy to make, its a BETA, etc.. Well here's my Beta feedback. The game isn't fun when I lose every ruble I scrape up trying to do quests with specific gun/armor requirements and finding FIR items in hotspots, and hiding to avoid losing those items, all while BSG -heavily- deflates the economy and punishes rule obeying players in the name of stamping out RMT. *Left out a word. Edit: let me just say, I don’t mean this as a personal attack towards Nikita or the other devs. It’s simply just my experience, and my thoughts. I don’t have answers on how to make the perfect balances and compromises, or fixes on RMT etc. I just wish it had been publicized ahead of time, something like “Okay guys, next wipe we’re gonna experiment with making it real hard.” Also I’ve gotten a lot of responses saying “you’re not supposed to run the best gear every raid.” And my reply is, my standard kit is a Vepr KM, 6B23 armor, a Ratnik helmet, and comtacs, with self made BP ammo from the hideout. I’ve just recently started adding TV10 armor rigs into the mix. I’m not a META player who has to have iglonik or M995 every raid. I’m not trying to say I want to do that either. For one CONSTRUCTIVE bit, I feel like items should have two different FIR tags. One for flea/resell, one for quests, and the quest one staying if you died with it. That would make life better to me and to a very large population of power players. Also, between FIR changes, reduced loot spawns, increased flea fees, reduced trader sell prices, any 1-2 of those are survivable but all of them together, with more to come I'm sure, are crushing. That's all I'm saying. EDIT Again : I just saw what Jaegers giving for guns. THAT is nice. That makes up a little bit for the stuff like fuel conditioners.
Spent the last few weeks dealing with Streamlabs' game capture feature. Here my suggestions on how to make it work properly and how to workaround eventual missing captures.
First off, after numerous attempts I wanna state out that the result of a successful capture from such feature seems to strongly depend by the number of resources Streamlabs (your cpu in this case) has available.P.S.: Make sure to open it with admin rights. Case 1: Game capture won't capture any game. This happened to me mostly when my GPU or DirectX just faced issues such crashes (of the gpu), driver updates or game crashes. Restart your PC first in safe mode, then restart again in normal mode. Case 1.1: Still not capturing a specific game. First off close all of your FPS / GPU / tweaks softwares such as MSI Afterburner and Rivatuner, or anything that has direct connection to your GPU / CPU hardware. Such softwares, especially the ones mentioned above are known to be great when it comes to play games but are also known to pop incompatibilities when it comes to streaming. Once you're done with that, restart your game and the streaming software (both in admin mode of course, or at least the streaming software). If that doesn't work out, keep those tweaking softwares closed and: Delete your "Game capture" element from ALL the scenes in the streaming software, then close it. Open it again (admin rights), recreate the "Game capture" thingy and set it to "Capture any fullscreen application", head to the game, set the resolution to "windowed" (it should now start capturing it) then go back to "fullscreen" or "fullscreen borderless". Case 2: Game capture works with most games but never does with one specific, or stops doing it after an update. This is gonna take time to figure it out as the community will make their voice be heard. Few games happen to just prevent direct hooks from third-party applications. However if google tells you nothing, it's definitely something on your end. Case 2.1: If it's on your end might be a lack of resources. You may start noticing your computer becomes laggy as fuck while that game is actually running, however, that's not always the case (Apex Legends for example will drain as much as it can without slowing down your PC, though streaming with Display capture will result in a laggy stream). Solution: If you can enable Hyperthreading (HT) in your BIOS this is gonna be lifechanging. Other than that I strongly doubt you're gonna have any chance to stream that and that's due to your hardware or tremendous fuck up out of the game's optimization (early access products won't be your best friends). Case 3: Game capture works just sometimes, like 50/50. Make sure to run the streaming software AND the game as admin. If the game uses a launcher, head to the game's directory, make sure that the .exe are set to be running with admin rights (properties on the .exe). If that's still ignores the capture then I think the only solution you've got is to open/close it over and over until it works, sucks but better than using the "Display capture" thing. Another thing, slightly more common: If you're using "Capture any fullscreen application" try switching to "Capture specific window", also try to disable/enable (eye-off/eye-on) the element while the game is running already (make sure to have it in fullscreen or fullscreen borderless). And viceversa. Case 4: Game capture stops working after specific loading screens in-game. It usually concerns whenever THAT loading screen or THAT action happens and never again. In Apex Legends I had this loading screen where after that, the capture would freeze but the game would run just fine (I didn't even notice it initially that my stream was stuck with the loading frame although the audio was working fine). That's not on you, though, you can close (eye off) the capture and open it again (eye on) after the loading screen, maybe you may want to use an intermission scene and then switch over the game scene after the loading. However, I feel like using the "foreground window hotkey" capture mode was the best but you need to remember about pressing the hotkey every time that loading happens. In some games it just won't fix it and your stream will be stuck in that loading screen forever no matter what you do. Display capture is the only way at this point (Darkest dungeon was an example). Feelsbad. Case 5: Game capture won't find your game window in the list of windows while "Capture specific window" is selected. Usually you want to wait and open/close that droplist over and over until it shows up. However, that's not guaranteed. Don't waste too much time on it, close the streaming software, open the game THEN the software, it should appear now (remember about admin rights for both, game and software). If you can't close the streaming software because you're live for example, delete the "Game capture" element from ALL your scenes, close the game if open, re-open it (or just start it if it wasn't running yet), once it's running you can create again the "Game capture" thingy and it should show up. If it doesn't, bruh, don't play lottery today. Case 6: Game capture works just fine but the stream results to be laggy (although the game is fine). Reduce the weight on your GPU or CPU by limiting the FPS. If you have a 60hz monitor do not allow the game to go beyond that value, same if you have a 144hz and you pc starts shooting a 230fps transmission. Cap that out and you'll solve you problem (it worked absolutely fine with Apex Legends, Planetside Arena, CoD:MW). Last words about general heads up: Hyper threading from the BIOS literally flipped my situation once, my CPU was at 100%, my PC was extremely slowed down and my DirectX was crashing over and over making every single software based on GPU crashing (streamlabs, games, photoshop...). My stream was just lagging costantly although my game was running okay. I've enabled Hyperthreading in the BIOS and that was it, CPU at 60% from then on, game gained over 40FPS (80 to 120+), PC no longer slowed down and I could even increase the quality of my stream (presets, bitrate, resolution from 720 to 1080...). Remember to keep your PC clean, I use MalwareBytes and my AV (Avast lulz) but MalwareBytes does the most as it happened few time to get some Bitcoin miner motherF* that was slowing down my system a lot. CCleaner is okay if you wanna run some scans but don't over use it. Run defrags every month. Create backups before updating your GPU drivers, they are not always your friend and no they don't really make you feel like you now own the best machine of all times. I hope this could help someone, it made me crazy to fix some stuff.
Wholeheartedly willing to get downvoted, but this RMT obsession has to stop.
This sub hasn't got a clue, I swear. Huge sweeping changes to the game mechanics are a terrible way to combat RMT. It's basically an admission that your anti-cheat doesn't work. Most MMOs suffer in some way from an RMT problem; WoW, Runescape, even Destiny 2 has RMT issues if you just look. Thing is, the anticheat in those games actually works worth a damn, so the entire playerbase doesn't have to suffer from endless tinkering with in-game systems. Before you hit me with 'it's a hardcore game, deal with it, it's supposed to be grindy', just stop. Just don't bother. I've heard it time and time again, and it's bullshit. You know it's bullshit just as well as I do. The changes BSG have been making recently to nerf all forms of progression only make the game 'more hardcore' for people who work full time and don't have the same amount of *time* as streamers who dedicate their entire life to this game. That's not 'hardcore'. The game's difficulty mechanically is 'hardcore' and always have been, and I love it. These changes, though, in my eyes, are just time-wasting for the sake thereof. Since when does the amount of time one has to invest in a game define how fucking hardcore it is? Would you describe WoW as more hardcore than Tarkov because of how long you have to play to progress? Or perhaps beating all three Witcher games back to back is 'hardcore' because it took a long time. Are ARMA or DCS inherently less hardcore than Tarkov because an operation can be completed in an afternoon? No, judging how hardcore a game is by the amount of time one has to invest in it is a joke. *No game* should give enormous *mechanical advantages* to those with more time on their hands. There's already an inherent skill advantage that comes from that amount of practice, designing the mechanics to also reward only those with that much time is a kick in the teeth to all the people who love this game but can't invest that level of time. And yeah, you can go ahead and say 'ummm actualllly it's a beta, so they can do what they like, stop whining', and yep. Yes, they can. You're correct. However, comma, that doesn't mean I have to pretend to like it. Yes, I did buy EoD and no, I don't regret it because of all the fun I've had til now. But suggesting people who don't like the current direction the game is going in aren't allowed to voice their opinion because the game's in beta is fucking ludicrous. What do you think the purpose of a playable beta is? Nikita is more than welcome to ignore all the people who don't like these new changes, but what gives people on this sub the right to tell me that I'm not entitled to an opinion on the product I've chosen to financially support. It's such a toxic, capital-G Gamer attitute to suggest that 'Tarkov is OUR game because we're willing to dump several full days a week into grinding for our Bitcoin farms. You should just go and play something else, this clearly isn't a game for you. Go play Call of Duty.' I shouldn't even have to express how utterly reductive and childish that is. Grow up. I'm getting HUGE red flags with the way this game is currently going, because it's all too similar to a game I used to love, The Culling. That game blew up on launch and a bunch of high profile streamers suggested changes to the game, and the devs went ahead and implemented all of them without so much as *thinking* about how they'd affect the average player. Look at where that game is now. Servers shut down, because the average player simply stopped having fun. I'm not saying BSG is even close to that bad, but this endless tinkering with mechanics for the nebulous, vague purpose of 'RMT' has to stop or I don't know if the 'little guys' are gonna stick around much longer. EDIT: I AM AWARE THAT RMT != CHEATING. But cheating is what makes RMT viable. RMTers need to keep items in supply, and to do that, they cheat. It's much more profitable. Ergo, if you stamp out cheaters, the RMT problem becomes significantly diminished. EDIT 2: u/ArxMessor makes a great point that Tarkov is an MMO and therfore should have some kind of grind. I agree. However, most MMOs use systems like weekly bounties etc to ensure even players with only maybe 10 hours a week to invest in the game can still keep up and compete. Tarkov currently rewards time investment *exponentially* which removes all possibility of catching up. EDIT 3: Yep, my DMs right now are very much confirming the things I said above about a certain subset of this community. Thanks, Gamers. EDIT 4: I get it, Destiny anti-cheat is ass. I made a mistake there, since I don't play Trials of Osiris. However, do you see Bungie making the win requirement for Trials 50 wins instead of 9 or whatever just to slow down the hackers? Of course not, because it hurts normal players more. Edit 5: My first gold! Thanks kind stranger.
You may be in quarantine, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t! For those who don’t know, every month this subreddit makes a millionaire out of one comment, and donates. With danger out and about, take some time and comment to enter! [Drawing Thread #52]
I thought this year would be a lot more normal.
Introduction: Welcome to anyone and everyone coming from /popular. To be honest, I probably should've expected this, given that most of us are staying home. For those who aren't familiar: every month, we ask for comments for entry, and we pick one who represents our winner. This process is completely random and verifiable, using the Bitcoin blockchain as a sophisticated die. Following this, people then donate to the winner using a variety of mediums, and the winner would go on to be a "millionaire" (arguably, our definition of that term is pretty loose). So once again, thank you for your support. The post lasts for 24 hours before getting locked, so make sure you place your comment before 7 PM ET. In addition, I may make a [Part 2] if we reach the limit. If that happens, I will sticky a comment on this post temporarily. Let's make a millionaire! In Case You Missed It:
REQUIRED: Leave only one (1) top level comment in reply to this thread! (Replying to other comments will not qualify. You must be thirty days old or older to comment.)
A random user who commented will be chosen, and everyone donates a dollar to make a millionaire.
February 19 at 7:00 PM ET (epoch timestamp: 1582153200 (a bit tricky taking DST into consideration, it’s been updated)) is the cutoff for accounts. If you have created your account after this point, you are not eligible to enter and your submission will be disqualified automatically.
March 22 at 12:00 PM ET (epoch timestamp: 1584892800) will begin the process of selecting the winner. At this time, the [Draw] post will be online and start the process of waiting for the blockchain, in order to select the winner randomly and verifiably.
Mini Survey: NOTE: A Google account is required to respond to hinder tampering, but you are not obligated to answer. So I’ve been thinking about this for a while: people are not having pleasant experiences with PayPal. If the account isn’t blocked, then there are issues with fees, fear of the seizure of funds, and the risk of revealing personally identifiable information. However, it is the largest platform used by /MillionaireMakers, and is the provider of most donations on this subreddit. This survey is purely to see how people feel about this. Unless if the winner chooses to not accept PayPal, we will continue to offer this service for tonight’s thread. My questions are: 1) How would you feel about a ban on the PayPal service here on /MillionaireMakers? 2) Would removing PayPal as a service affect your ability to donate? 3) Should /MillionaireMakers remove PayPal? I will periodically post results here. If you are interested in responding, please answer here, answers will not be accepted at the time the [Draw] is posted: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSffkP3SKdTi9lLPbtO8taG4_-cdctYlAf8SvohvzoJvTOYdhw/viewform?usp=sf_link Drawing Process Mini-Update: This is as short as they come, leroy627 has made a commit to the repository that adds backwards-compatibility up to Python 3.5. Procedure will be run with the following conditions: the first comment of duplicates are kept for the month of March, and any ineligible comments will be removed. If you are interested in more information, see [Drawing Thread #51]: https://reddit.com/millionairemakers/comments/f7jdxz/alright_were_getting_back_into_the_flow_happy/
Sunday at 12 PM ET (16 UTC), we will be picking our winner, and you won’t want to miss it. If a lone $1 can get you a mask for obvious reasons, then imagine the possibilities with $1,000,000. You can get a full-body suit, new doors, and someone to love you! Admittedly, for the wrong reasons, but the option is there. A million dollars can make someone’s suffering less sufferable. Spread the word: have your friends and family comment, post the link to your friendly-neighborhood social media network, and share it to anyone interested.
Let’s make a millionaire!
Why, kind Haiku? Why? Am I to atone in home? Perhaps. I’ll get by.

Now is a great time to get into bitcoin. I am doing the same. Let's make some coin together by signing up with my link https://www.coinbase.com/join/dopler_4 $10 dollars for the both us! It is a nice way to get started in the game.
Recently I decided to change all my professional and personal plans. I left my job. I left my friends and family. I left my country. All for Bitcoin. Here is why.
Discovering my core values I was born and raised in an upper-middle income family in Mexico City under catholic values but turned agnostic as I grew older. I kept the values that made sense, such as the importance of charity and giving back, and threw away the ones that were outdated, such as the focus on guilt as a motivator of change. As a kid, I remember how conflicting it was to see other kids working in the streets, starving, drugged, and abused. I couldn’t understand why they couldn’t focus on their education the way I did. That planted a seed in my spirit that still grows. Seeing in economics hope As a teenager, I entered the rabbit hole of economics with hope. Economics seemed to be this mystical force capable of solving the world’s biggest problems: poverty, corruption, global warming, and many more. I knew that the way we were doing economics was wrong and I wanted to change that. Just think about the horrible things that have been done under the name of communism, such as the Cambodian genocide, or how the United States, the crown jewel of capitalism, makes of fundamental rights, such as healthcare and education, profitable businesses instead of granting everyone equal access to them. While studying my undergrad, I quickly fell out of love with the idealistic idea of economics as an almighty force that can conquer all evils. I saw how economics was often used as an excuse to force simplistic representations of culture and society into complex problems. I never understood how that approach of thinking about problems in a vacuum could be useful. Understanding the power of financial services Later in my life, while working as a consultant for McKinsey, I finally understood the importance of financial institutions. They decide who should do business and have access to goods and services and who shouldn’t. And financial institutions don’t grant everyone that right. It was clear to me that that was a problem that needed fixing. That’s why I devoted so much time studying this industry back then. I came to Berkeley to Business School more out of inertia than out of will. I was sponsored by McKinsey and had an offer to go back. I didn’t know exactly what to do with the experience, but I knew I wanted to keep exploring financial services. During my MBA, I heard about Bitcoin in a serious academic environment for the first time and it immediately caught my interest. Via Berkeley-SkyDeck, a startup school, I heard about lastbit (lasbit.io) for the first time. I read everything I could about the project and about the founder, this cool, heavy-metal lover, who wanted to change the world with the disruptive power of Bitcoin. I could see myself in him. I had to meet him. After failing to meet him in person at an event, I just cold emailed him praying for him to answer. He did. That’s how I came in contact with Prashanth for the first time, this impressive 25-year-old genius who managed to get Charlie Lee on board of his project with little more than a prototype. There’s a reason why he managed to do this. Today Bitcoin is almost impossible to spend. With Prashanth’s his solution, anyone will be able to swipe a card or tap their phone and pay with Bitcoin instantly anywhere where they are able to pay with their credit card today. Something not so long ago possible only in bitcoiners’ dreams. Through Prashanth I finally understood what Bitcoin really is. It blew my mind. Unveiling the real meaning of Bitcoin Bitcoin is not an investment asset, it’s the possibility of a new social contract. Bitcoin is a decentralized, transparent, and auditable network to store and transmit value to which everyone in the world can have access to. This presents a real opportunity to redefine money, which today is inherently centralized, first by central banks, and then by financial institutions. The centralization of money has at least three critical problems that Bitcoin solves. First, there is a macroeconomic problem that has to do with monetary policy and that today with the COVID-19 economic crisis is more relevant than ever. Money is supposed to be a reflection of real economic value, but some central banks print money arbitrarily. Bitcoin’s monetary supply is limited by design. Second, centralized financial services are discriminatory and don’t allow free access to everyone. Bitcoin is universal and free. This means that for the first time in human history, everyone will be able to participate in the global economy. And participation is the pillar of democracy. Third, central authorities control private information. The recent attacks to high profile account on Twitter illustrate how vulnerable private information is when stored in centralized networks. Bitcoin allows people to have full ownership and control of their personal and financial information, protecting both their identity and their wealth. As such, Bitcoin emerged in front of my eyes as a way to instrument basic democratic principles in a way in which everyone can have equal representation. Money as we know it will soon be a thing of the past because money as we know it not fair nor egalitarian and now people can choose. I had to quit McKinsey. I had to leave Mexico. I had to stay with lastbit. I had to give this project my all.
[Winner's Thread #55] Looks like the Tooth Fairy is Real!
Hello MillionaireMakers! My name is Tibor, and I’m just a regular every-day normal guy. Going to be celebrating my 33rd b-day in a couple of weeks, and I could not have wished for a nicer present than this! I work as a Technical Consultant at a local IT company, where I facilitate data migration into archiving solutions and cloud storage systems. This is every bit as fascinating as it sounds /s. In my free time I enjoy nature, climbing walls, going biking, and if the weather does not let me go out, I spend my time learning about watch complications or mixing techno with my bedroom DJ setup at home, or just watching stupid movies. Due to an unscheduled dental emergency, I spent most of my week in the dental cabinet, and I was still pumped up on anaesthetics when I got home and opened my laptop to see the news. Surprised is an understatement. The reactions of the people on reddit blew me away, and I tried my best to send a thank-you note to all commenters. Sorry if I missed yours! I'm sure that the winnings will go mostly to cover my medical bills, but I am going to donate 10% of this to a local org called Beard Brothers. They are knows for funding ambulances and creating great care packages for local orphanages and old folks homes. I want to thank you all in advance for your donations and positive vibes. You are all amazing! I have to sleep now, it's past 4 Am where I live. What a day... EDIT: I've been up for a couple of hours now trying to get through all messages and the mountain of notifications. I'm sure this is a once-in-a-lifetime feeling and am trying to ride it while it lasts. I'm overwhelmed by all the positive messages, amazing vibes and b-day wishes. I appreciate all of them. Since people have been asking, I'll try to add some edits to keep you posted with progress. So far it's ~$500 on PayPal and Revolut combined, and ~$45 in combined crypto. I can't thank you enough! I'll be waiting a few days for things to slow down and really looking forward to making my donation. Everything else is going to fund my pearly whites :) EDIT 2: Thank you all for your donations and positive vibes! It's end of day one, and things have finally settled down. A total so far would be $990 on PayPal, $31 on Revolut, $54 in Bitcoin, $34 in Bitcoin Cash, $12 Nano, and $10 in Ether! Wooohoo :) Thank you all!! EDIT 3: The weekend has passed, and I was sort of offline while visiting family. A huge Thank You again to everyone that donated, and sorry for the late reply on your comments. New Total is $1120 Paypal, $31 Revolut, $76 BTC, $34 Bitcoin Cash, $16 in Ether and 14.53 Nano. Thank You!! EDIT 4: I have donated $150 to the local org Beard Brothers. Their newest fundraiser is aiming to build a school for the needy around the Cluj-Napoca area. I can happily provide proof of my donation if asked (with a heads-up that all communication in this regards is, unfortunately, in Romanian). EDIT 5: It's been almost 2 weeks since I posted this, and the new Total would be $1437 on Paypal + Revolut combined and ~ $150 in mixed Crypto. I'll probably hodl the crypto, and the rest is enough to cover a chunk of my dentals. (not bad, for a random comment on Reddit). Thank you to everyone who donated, and everyone that sent congrats! :) EDIT 6 Some (final?) statistics from me after this very interesting and awesome experience. I received ~$70 since my last edit, making the new total a pretty round $1500 on Paypal and Revolut combined, and ~$150 in combined crypto. I want to thank the (approximately) 400 redditors who donated, and I really hope that I was able to reply to all of you kind enough to comment in here. This was truly an unexpected surprise, made more amazing by each and every one of you! P.S. Special thanks to lilfruini for making this entire process amazingly smooth. Everything listed should result in direct lines of payment to tirbert. We ask all users to donate at least $1 USD. Late last year I fell for a romance scam. I was on a dating app and I was chatting with a woman (sure I got catfished). We were chatting (not talking but texting) for a month and she said that she needed help getting home because she was robbed and not in the states at the time. We texted eachother throughout this situation and she sent a check to me. I deposited the check to my acct and sent the money to her through bitcoin (check was found fraudulent a few days after I sent the money). I was hoping to meet this woman but It was an epic fail and I let myself down because I didn't follow my gut feeling (I ignored so many red flags and bought into the story, yes I know I'm a huge idiot). I even did my research prior to this and my dumbass still went on with it smh. My bank acct was closed because of it and I filed a police report, thankfully I didn't get in trouble. This lesson was learned the hard way and I will never make the same mistake again, but I do have regrets because I ignored my intuition and allowed this to happen to me. The check was $2,500 smh and no I didn't have to pay anything back. I have opened up a new bank acct after this issue and blocked the scammer etc. I'm bothered by the fact that this scammer had my # and address. A strange # text me in March, I ignored and haven't been contacted since. How can I stop thinking about my bad decision every day and move on from it ? (I still feel stupid about it).
After 1.5 wipes, I finally broke 50% SR + Tips for newer players from an FPS noob
I am so stoked about this finally happening! My gaming background is overwhelmingly WoW, RTS, and single player puzzle/questing games (Skyrim, Zelda). My buddies got me into FPS games with COD almost ten years ago, but it was never my thing. My reflexes are inconsistent, my eyes have trouble with making sense of constant movement and noticing tiny pixel details instantly, and I'm generally slowing down a little over time...but fucking Tarkov. TARKOV! This is the first FPS that ever made sense to me. It's not purely reflexes, run and gun, spawn die, K/D circle jerking. It's okay to literally just hide until enough information is gathered to counter attack. It's okay to hide in a bush for 20 minutes while Omega Chad 9000 runs around trying to find you after massacring 3/4 of the team, wait for him to loot, then pop the squash. It's okay to retreat and wait for a better fight. Every other FPS game I've played has basically punished intelligent fight tactics and patience, which is totally against how I think and mentally approach that sort of situation. After trying all sorts of styles, I finally found what works for me - I aim for a perfect balance of Rat/Chad. I will NEVER take a fight if I can avoid it, but if the firing starts, I instantly suppressive fire and don't worry if I live or die. This has saved my ass countless times since I started doing it. I used to try to turn and run, then die with my back turned most of the time. Most people will panic if their ambush target suddenly unloads a hailstorm of BT ammo at them, and at that point they usually are on the back foot, which is when Chad time happens. Dump grenades, flank with cover, score the kill. If I have the advantage, I hold my fire until it's a clean shot, especially against squads. I've been able to wipe duos, trios, and even quads by picking them off one by one instead of trying to be a hero with my spray. Against a quad, when the first guy drops, the other three will usually run to where they think you are and start sweeping like they're juggernauts. Pick off another and I almost guarantee one of the remaining two will panic and start to run for cover, which makes them a free shot if you gave yourself good visibility. Last man standing will either rush you (again freebie if you hid or re-positioned well) or run like hell and try to camp the bodies. OUT WAIT THEM. Do not get impatient, this will get you killed. Always let them make the first move so you have information advantage. I will likely not win the fight if they are well hidden and I'm making noise, unless they have bad ammo and are a bad shot. Getting over gear fear was extremely critical as well to break 50% SR. If you're panicking at every engagement and thinking about losing your juice, you're probably going to lose your juice. Any stress or worry that isn't towards your immediate threat will make you play differently, and likely worse. I spent last wipe sitting on ~30mil roubles, and would panic over whether or not I was about to lose a ReapIR, instead of just taking the game fight and winning. This wipe, I decided it's all pixels and I want to play better. Fuck the Slick, fuck the EXFIL, it can all be replaced. Take the fight and win with knowledge. If you die, try again. Of course, having enough money to not care anymore is huge, so for anyone reading this that is going "well of course you stopped caring, you can run full kits and replace them 1000x, while I can barely get good ammo," find yourself a loot run that works. Making money is extremely easy if you put in the time. I spent basically the first 3 weeks of this wipe 50/50 between questing and loot runs to Shoreline. I got extremely lucky and found an East 226 key, which gave me ~12 LEDX and easily over 20 GPUs in East 222. I used those funds to buy more keys/rush Bitcoin farm. Once you have a proper Bitcoin income, you can do literally whatever you want in this game with no real financial consequences. SET. GOALS. Every raid I get into I have a plan. Sometimes it's hit up loot spots and avoid fights when possible. Other times it's quests. Change your plans on the fly and get weird with it. I have a rule that if I hear an M4 shooting, I have to kill that guy. I don't care what's in the way, I don't care how big the squad is, that son of a bitch is using my favorite gun without my permission and must be dealt with. The first week I started doing that, I took a fight on Interchange that I would NEVER take normally. Slick/EXFIL/full meta M4 absolutely massacring the server. I waited my turn and essentially herded the guy, slowly closing in on him, until I had him pinned. Then I rushed him with my RPK and somehow won the fight with 5 blacked limbs. This was probably my most ballsy play in Tarkov, and it happened because I set some idiotic and borderline suicidal rule for myself in every raid. Seriously, just set yourself any goal, no matter how little, big, or straight up insane, and try. You'll start playing differently to achieve that goal, doing everything you can to make it happen. Also, just have fun. It's a damn video game after all. The most memorable raids I've had are when me and my buddies do ridiculous shit and die trying. Cowboy hats and ironsight Hunters into resort while pretending to be cowboys? Absolute blast, just try it and don't worry. Captain Price hats and 'staches into woods with no armor? Absurdly enjoyable. Well lads, that's the ramblings of an FPS noob who is slowly getting better and better at a game I never suspected to continue playing past the first few hours. It's been an absolute roller coaster ride, but I've loved every second of random death, anxiety, and last stands. For any new players out there, feel free to ask me any questions about anything - money making, play style, builds, whatever you're curious about. For the vets, I look forward to trading shots with you! Hope to learn a thing or two from how effectively you gave me some aggressive body modifications. https://preview.redd.it/muidzl4r0ya51.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=ab4a0eaa3949bbc75d05029e053b5b4424e5c5d1
The Twitter hack was the biggest media hijack of all time and it makes no sense
The (alleged) story so far: Some scammer(s) paid off a Twitter employee to give them access to their admin tools and took over the accounts of Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Elon Musk, Kanye West etc. just to use them for a simple Bitcoin scam that netted them some $120K. Why that's ridiculous: The hackers got full access to the accounts of many of the most powerful people in the world. To have that level of access in the 1980s they would have had to hijack the broadcasts of several national TV networks for 5 minutes AND have the capability to create content that would have been impossible to separate from the normal scheduled programming. The 80s equivalent of this scam would have been broadcasting a low-rent infomercial urging people to send a check or money order to a P.O. box with a return envelope to receive double the amount back. With such access one could either make a fortune, or fuck with the US in a way that's never seen before. The conspiracy part: The access they had to Twitter would have been worth magnitudes more than what they made. That's why it makes no sense to waste it on a small time hustle. So, my theories from the least likely to the most likely are:
Some inept but incredibly lucky criminals stumbled onto the opportunity of a lifetime and used it before anyone else could.
The scam is just a smokescreen and the hacker's actual goal was getting to the private messages on those accounts.
Some "friendly" glow-in-the-dark types knew about the vulnerability and intentionally burned it so others couldn't use it to influence the elections.
The number of users stagnates since ATH. Is this a problem or just a reddit-community thing? Do we need more "Newbies"? My opinion: "I think its time to get disappointed "Bitcoin-Follower" (yeah i know they hate us and we hate them) to our platform. Iota needs more co-creation to be better prepared for a future. " I would like to hear your opinion!
Living in a post-GPT-3 world: What will the consequences be?
As you have probably noticed, the recently published GPT-3 language model from OpenAI has captured the attention of this and some other communities and deservedly so: Another previously exclusive domain of human intellect, namely speech generation, has seemingly fallen. Sure, the text isn't always coherent and the semantics can be lacking, but consider that we have been working on this problem since the 60-70s; take ELIZA as an example. A lot of the work that later ended up in stuff like compilers was also about natural language generation and understanding. But, using the techniques from that time, language generation turned out to be more or less impossible; ELIZA was just a party trick. But now, AI has seemingly conquered this domain as well. Some people think that with some tweaks, such models can achieve human-like intelligence; GAI as a sequence-generation problem. I personally am not quite that optimistic (or pessimistic?), but let's consider the direct impact of GPT-like models on our society.
Spam, SEO and fraud: A very high fraction of texts generated are indistinguishable from low-effort human text; GPT-3 can basically write high-school essays. Spam has been a persistent problem for the internet since its inception; fraud and phishing are some of the most prevalent forms of cybercrime. SEO is slowly making the internet unusable. Automated SEO, spam, fraud and phishing might be a severe disruption to user-generated content on the internet. One of my bolder predictions is that we will see proof-of-work schemes like HashCash being used; these are the precursor to Bitcoin and were intended to solve the spam problem in the 90s by making e-mails have a small cost. CAPTCHAs are already something like that; we might have to solve a lot more of them in the future. Maybe you will have to pay 0.00005 cents to write internet comments. Or, alternatively, half of all the internet content might get written by a bot and we'll be none the wiser.
Political propaganda: A very common accusation on Reddit is to accuse ones debate opponent of being a political shill; for the CCP, the Russians, the Democrats, whatever. Internet comment section have certainly become a battleground for various state actors. Astroturfing refers to artificial grassroots movements; making people believe there is broad support for certain causes could certainly be a potent political tool. GPT-3 could help by auto-generating millions of plausible-seeming comments. It could generate normal, non-political comments as well, to make the account seem genuine. Lowering the costs of astroturfing might further inflame polarization; or it might lead to an abandonment of the internet as a political battleground, as there can be no trust that you are speaking to humans.
Because the recent influx of scammers lately I want to do something nice for everybody. $50 of Bitcoin to the first 10 people to post their wallet address.
Because I've been seen a lot of post lately about people getting scammed with these free Bitcoin giveaways and how you have to send the money to receive money I'm going to send $50 a Bitcoin to the next 10 people to post there wallet addresses. There's nothing else to it. edit:.OKAY NO MORE ADDRESSES. As for the paranoid dude with top comment... Do you even understand how Bitcoin and Bitcoin wallets work? You're loss. Everyone else, thanks for letting me farm your data. Suckers.... Jk. Edit 2: Okay, I lied. I sent 12 of you $50 in bitcoin BUT, the fee came out of your $50 so you're receiving $49.00 instead. Edit 3:Proof Edit 4: I was going to do another giveaway of $100 to 10 random redditors but now I'm regretting even doing the first giveaway. There's so many paranoid fucks that need to go outside and stop being cynical. No one on reddit is a unique snowflake, nor do any of you matter to the point that someone would give away $1000 dollars in Bitcoin just to find out who you are. Get the fuck over yourself naysayers. The reason I did this was because I made a post on Facebook to give $100 in Bitcoin to 10 random people that wanted to get started with Bitcoin. Only 1 person responded so I came here to make some people happy. My life is shit and the only way I can make myself happy is to make others happy. So thank you to the people that decided to shit in my Cheerios. My time on this earth is limited and I can't take my money to hell with me. Edit 5: I didn't realize how much this blew up. In 8 days I will be doing another giveaway of $100 worth of Bitcoin to the first 10 people to reply to the post (when it goes up in 8 days).
Taproot! Everybody wants to have it, somebody wants to make it, nobody knows how to get it! (If you are asking why everybody wants it, see: Technical: Taproot: Why Activate?) (Pedants: I mostly elide over lockin times) Briefly, Taproot is that neat new thing that gets us:
Multisignatures (n-of-n, k-of-n) that are just 1 signature (1-of-1) in length!! (MuSig/Schnorr)
Better privacy!! If all contract participants can agree, just use a multisignature. If there is a dispute, show the contract publicly and have the Bitcoin network resolve it (Taproot/MAST).
Activation lets devs work get back to work on the even newer stuff like!!!
Cross-input signature aggregation!! (transaction with multiple inputs can have a single signature for all inputs) --- needs Schnorr, but some more work needed to ensure that the interactions with SCRIPT are okay.
Block validation - Schnorr signatures for all taproot spends in a block can be validated in a single operation instead of for each transaction!! Speed up validation and maybe we can actually afford to increase block sizes (maybe)!!
SIGHASH_ANYPREVOUT - you know, for Decker-Russell-Osuntokun ("eltoo") magic!!!
OP_CHECKTEMPLATEVERIFY - vaulty vaults without requiring storing signatures, just transaction details!!
So yes, let's activate taproot!
The SegWit Wars
The biggest problem with activating Taproot is PTSD from the previous softfork, SegWit. Pieter Wuille, one of the authors of the current Taproot proposal, has consistently held the position that he will not discuss activation, and will accept whatever activation process is imposed on Taproot. Other developers have expressed similar opinions. So what happened with SegWit activation that was so traumatic? SegWit used the BIP9 activation method. Let's dive into BIP9!
bit - A field in the block header, the nVersion, has a number of bits. By setting a particular bit, the miner making the block indicates that it has upgraded its software to support a particular soft fork. The bit parameter for a BIP9 activation is which bit in this nVersion is used to indicate that the miner has upgraded software for a particular soft fork.
timeout - a time limit, expressed as an end date. If this timeout is reached without sufficient number of miners signaling that they upgraded, then the activation fails and Bitcoin Core goes back to the drawing board.
Now there are other parameters (name, starttime) but they are not anywhere near as important as the above two. A number that is not a parameter, is 95%. Basically, activation of a BIP9 softfork is considered as actually succeeding if at least 95% of blocks in the last 2 weeks had the specified bit in the nVersion set. If less than 95% had this bit set before the timeout, then the upgrade fails and never goes into the network. This is not a parameter: it is a constant defined by BIP9, and developers using BIP9 activation cannot change this. So, first some simple questions and their answers:
Why not just set a day when everyone starts imposing the new rules of the softfork?
This was done classically (in the days when Satoshi was still among us). But this might argued to put too much power to developers, since there would be no way to reject an upgrade without possible bad consequences. For example, developers might package an upgrade that the users do not want, together with vital security bugfixes. Either you live without vital security bugfixes and hire some other developers to fix it for you (which can be difficult, presumably the best developers are already the ones working on the codebase) or you get the vital security bugfixes and implicitly support the upgrade you might not want.
Sure, you could fork the code yourself (the ultimate threat in the FOSS world) and hire another set of developers who aren't assholes to do the dreary maintenance work of fixing security bugs, but Bitcoin needs strong bug-for-bug compatibility so everyone should really congregate around a single codebase.
Basically: even the devs do not want this power, because they fear being coerced into putting "upgrades" that are detrimental to users. Satoshi got a pass because nobody knew who he was and how to coerce him.
Suppose the threshold were lower, like 51%. If so, after activation, somebody can disrupt the Bitcoin network by creating a transaction that is valid under the pre-softfork rules, but are invalid under the post-softfork rules. Upgraded nodes would reject it, but 49% of miners would accept it and include it in a block (which makes the block invalid) And then the same 49% would accept the invalid block and build on top of that, possibly creating a short chain of doomed invalid blocks that confirm an invalid spend. This can confuse SPV wallets, who might see multiple confirmations of a transaction and accept the funds, but later find that in fact it is invalid under the now-activated softfork rules.
Thus, a very high threshold was imposed. 95% is considered safe. 50% is definitely not safe. Due to variance in the mining process, 80% could also be potentially unsafe (i.e. 80% of blocks signaling might have a good chance of coming from only 60% of miners), so a threshold of 95% was considered "safe enough for Bitcoin work".
Why have a timeout that disables the upgrade?
Before BIP9, what was used was either flag day or BIP34. BIP34 had no flag day of activation or a bit, instead, it was just a 95% threshold to signal an nVersion value greater than a specific value. Actually, it was two thresholds: at 75%, blocks with the new nVersion would have the new softfork rules imposed, but at 95% blocks with the old nVersion would be rejected (and only the new blocks, with the new softfork rules, were accepted). For one, between 75% and 95%, there was a situation where the softfork was only "partially imposed", only blocks signaling the new rules would actually have those rules, but blocks with the old rules were still valid. This was fine for BIP34, which only added rules for miners with negligible use for non-miners.
The reasons miners signalled support was because they felt they were being pressured to signal support. So they signalled support, with plans to actually upgrade later, but because of the widespread signalling, the new BIP66 version locked in before upgrade plans were finished. Thus, the timeout that disables the upgrade was added in BIP9 to allow miners an escape hatch.
The Great Battles of the SegWit Wars
SegWit not only fixed transaction malleability, it also created a practical softforkable blocksize increase that also rebalanced weights so that the cost of spending a UTXO is about the same as the cost of creating UTXOs (and spending UTXOs is "better" since it limits the size of the UTXO set that every fullnode has to maintain). So SegWit was written, the activation was decided to be BIP9, and then.... miner signalling stalled at below 75%. Thus were the Great SegWit Wars started.
BIP9 Feature Hostage
If you are a miner with at least 5% global hashpower, you can hold a BIP9-activated softfork hostage. You might even secretly want the softfork to actually push through. But you might want to extract concession from the users and the developers. Like removing the halvening. Or raising or even removing the block size caps (which helps larger miners more than smaller miners, making it easier to become a bigger fish that eats all the smaller fishes). Or whatever. With BIP9, you can hold the softfork hostage. You just hold out and refuse to signal. You tell everyone you will signal, if and only if certain concessions are given to you. This ability by miners to hold a feature hostage was enabled because of the miner-exit allowed by the timeout on BIP9. Prior to that, miners were considered little more than expendable security guards, paid for the risk they take to secure the network, but not special in the grand scheme of Bitcoin.
ASICBoost was a novel way of optimizing SHA256 mining, by taking advantage of the structure of the 80-byte header that is hashed in order to perform proof-of-work. The details of ASICBoost are out-of-scope here but you can read about it elsewhere Here is a short summary of the two types of ASICBoost, relevant to the activation discussion.
Overt ASICBoost - Manipulates the unused bits in nVersion to reduce power consumption in mining.
Covert ASICBoost - Manipulates the order of transactions in the block to reduce power consumption in mining.
Now, "overt" means "obvious", while "covert" means hidden. Overt ASICBoost is obvious because nVersion bits that are not currently in use for BIP9 activations are usually 0 by default, so setting those bits to 1 makes it obvious that you are doing something weird (namely, Overt ASICBoost). Covert ASICBoost is non-obvious because the order of transactions in a block are up to the miner anyway, so the miner rearranging the transactions in order to get lower power consumption is not going to be detected. Unfortunately, while Overt ASICBoost was compatible with SegWit, Covert ASICBoost was not. This is because, pre-SegWit, only the block header Merkle tree committed to the transaction ordering. However, with SegWit, another Merkle tree exists, which commits to transaction ordering as well. Covert ASICBoost would require more computation to manipulate two Merkle trees, obviating the power benefits of Covert ASICBoost anyway. Now, miners want to use ASICBoost (indeed, about 60->70% of current miners probably use the Overt ASICBoost nowadays; if you have a Bitcoin fullnode running you will see the logs with lots of "60 of last 100 blocks had unexpected versions" which is exactly what you would see with the nVersion manipulation that Overt ASICBoost does). But remember: ASICBoost was, at around the time, a novel improvement. Not all miners had ASICBoost hardware. Those who did, did not want it known that they had ASICBoost hardware, and wanted to do Covert ASICBoost! But Covert ASICBoost is incompatible with SegWit, because SegWit actually has two Merkle trees of transaction data, and Covert ASICBoost works by fudging around with transaction ordering in a block, and recomputing two Merkle Trees is more expensive than recomputing just one (and loses the ASICBoost advantage). Of course, those miners that wanted Covert ASICBoost did not want to openly admit that they had ASICBoost hardware, they wanted to keep their advantage secret because miners are strongly competitive in a very tight market. And doing ASICBoost Covertly was just the ticket, but they could not work post-SegWit. Fortunately, due to the BIP9 activation process, they could hold SegWit hostage while covertly taking advantage of Covert ASICBoost!
UASF: BIP148 and BIP8
When the incompatibility between Covert ASICBoost and SegWit was realized, still, activation of SegWit stalled, and miners were still not openly claiming that ASICBoost was related to non-activation of SegWit. Eventually, a new proposal was created: BIP148. With this rule, 3 months before the end of the SegWit timeout, nodes would reject blocks that did not signal SegWit. Thus, 3 months before SegWit timeout, BIP148 would force activation of SegWit. This proposal was not accepted by Bitcoin Core, due to the shortening of the timeout (it effectively times out 3 months before the initial SegWit timeout). Instead, a fork of Bitcoin Core was created which added the patch to comply with BIP148. This was claimed as a User Activated Soft Fork, UASF, since users could freely download the alternate fork rather than sticking with the developers of Bitcoin Core. Now, BIP148 effectively is just a BIP9 activation, except at its (earlier) timeout, the new rules would be activated anyway (instead of the BIP9-mandated behavior that the upgrade is cancelled at the end of the timeout). BIP148 was actually inspired by the BIP8 proposal (the link here is a historical version; BIP8 has been updated recently, precisely in preparation for Taproot activation). BIP8 is basically BIP9, but at the end of timeout, the softfork is activated anyway rather than cancelled. This removed the ability of miners to hold the softfork hostage. At best, they can delay the activation, but not stop it entirely by holding out as in BIP9. Of course, this implies risk that not all miners have upgraded before activation, leading to possible losses for SPV users, as well as again re-pressuring miners to signal activation, possibly without the miners actually upgrading their software to properly impose the new softfork rules.
BIP91, SegWit2X, and The Aftermath
BIP148 inspired countermeasures, possibly from the Covert ASiCBoost miners, possibly from concerned users who wanted to offer concessions to miners. To this day, the common name for BIP148 - UASF - remains an emotionally-charged rallying cry for parts of the Bitcoin community. One of these was SegWit2X. This was brokered in a deal between some Bitcoin personalities at a conference in New York, and thus part of the so-called "New York Agreement" or NYA, another emotionally-charged acronym. The text of the NYA was basically:
Set up a new activation threshold at 80% signalled at bit 4 (vs bit 1 for SegWit).
When this 80% signalling was reached, miners would require that bit 1 for SegWit be signalled to achive the 95% activation needed for SegWit.
If the bit 4 signalling reached 80%, increase the block weight limit from the SegWit 4000000 to the SegWit2X 8000000, 6 months after bit 1 activation.
The first item above was coded in BIP91. Unfortunately, if you read the BIP91, independently of NYA, you might come to the conclusion that BIP91 was only about lowering the threshold to 80%. In particular, BIP91 never mentions anything about the second point above, it never mentions that bit 4 80% threshold would also signal for a later hardfork increase in weight limit. Because of this, even though there are claims that NYA (SegWit2X) reached 80% dominance, a close reading of BIP91 shows that the 80% dominance was only for SegWit activation, without necessarily a later 2x capacity hardfork (SegWit2X). This ambiguity of bit 4 (NYA says it includes a 2x capacity hardfork, BIP91 says it does not) has continued to be a thorn in blocksize debates later. Economically speaking, Bitcoin futures between SegWit and SegWit2X showed strong economic dominance in favor of SegWit (SegWit2X futures were traded at a fraction in value of SegWit futures: I personally made a tidy but small amount of money betting against SegWit2X in the futures market), so suggesting that NYA achieved 80% dominance even in mining is laughable, but the NYA text that ties bit 4 to SegWit2X still exists. Historically, BIP91 triggered which caused SegWit to activate before the BIP148 shorter timeout. BIP148 proponents continue to hold this day that it was the BIP148 shorter timeout and no-compromises-activate-on-August-1 that made miners flock to BIP91 as a face-saving tactic that actually removed the second clause of NYA. NYA supporters keep pointing to the bit 4 text in the NYA and the historical activation of BIP91 as a failed promise by Bitcoin developers.
We have discussed BIP8: roughly, it has bit and timeout, if 95% of miners signal bit it activates, at the end of timeout it activates. (EDIT: BIP8 has had recent updates: at the end of timeout it can now activate or fail. For the most part, in the below text "BIP8", means BIP8-and-activate-at-timeout, and "BIP9" means BIP8-and-fail-at-timeout) So let's take a look at Modern Softfork Activation!
Modern Softfork Activation
This is a more complex activation method, composed of BIP9 and BIP8 as supcomponents.
First have a 12-month BIP9 (fail at timeout).
If the above fails to activate, have a 6-month discussion period during which users and developers and miners discuss whether to continue to step 3.
Have a 24-month BIP8 (activate at timeout).
The total above is 42 months, if you are counting: 3.5 years worst-case activation. The logic here is that if there are no problems, BIP9 will work just fine anyway. And if there are problems, the 6-month period should weed it out. Finally, miners cannot hold the feature hostage since the 24-month BIP8 period will exist anyway.
PSA: Being Resilient to Upgrades
Software is very birttle. Anyone who has been using software for a long time has experienced something like this:
You hear a new version of your favorite software has a nice new feature.
Excited, you install the new version.
You find that the new version has subtle incompatibilities with your current workflow.
You are sad and downgrade to the older version.
You find out that the new version has changed your files in incompatible ways that the old version cannot work with anymore.
You tearfully reinstall the newer version and figure out how to get your lost productivity now that you have to adapt to a new workflow
If you are a technically-competent user, you might codify your workflow into a bunch of programs. And then you upgrade one of the external pieces of software you are using, and find that it has a subtle incompatibility with your current workflow which is based on a bunch of simple programs you wrote yourself. And if those simple programs are used as the basis of some important production system, you hve just screwed up because you upgraded software on an important production system. And well, one of the issues with new softfork activation is that if not enough people (users and miners) upgrade to the newest Bitcoin software, the security of the new softfork rules are at risk. Upgrading software of any kind is always a risk, and the more software you build on top of the software-being-upgraded, the greater you risk your tower of software collapsing while you change its foundations. So if you have some complex Bitcoin-manipulating system with Bitcoin somewhere at the foundations, consider running two Bitcoin nodes:
One is a "stable-version" Bitcoin node. Once it has synced, set it up to connect=x.x.x.x to the second node below (so that your ISP bandwidth is only spent on the second node). Use this node to run all your software: it's a stable version that you don't change for long periods of time. Enable txiindex, disable pruning, whatever your software needs.
The other is an "always-up-to-date" Bitcoin Node. Keep its stoarge down with pruning (initially sync it off the "stable-version" node). You can't use blocksonly if your "stable-version" node needs to send transactions, but otherwise this "always-up-to-date" Bitcoin node can be kept as a low-resource node, so you can run both nodes in the same machine.
When a new Bitcoin version comes up, you just upgrade the "always-up-to-date" Bitcoin node. This protects you if a future softfork activates, you will only receive valid Bitcoin blocks and transactions. Since this node has nothing running on top of it, it is just a special peer of the "stable-version" node, any software incompatibilities with your system software do not exist. Your "stable-version" Bitcoin node remains the same version until you are ready to actually upgrade this node and are prepared to rewrite most of the software you have running on top of it due to version compatibility problems. When upgrading the "always-up-to-date", you can bring it down safely and then start it later. Your "stable-version" wil keep running, disconnected from the network, but otherwise still available for whatever queries. You do need some system to stop the "always-up-to-date" node if for any reason the "stable-version" goes down (otherwisee if the "always-up-to-date" advances its pruning window past what your "stable-version" has, the "stable-version" cannot sync afterwards), but if you are technically competent enough that you need to do this, you are technically competent enough to write such a trivial monitor program (EDIT: gmax notes you can adjust the pruning window by RPC commands to help with this as well). This recommendation is from gmaxwell on IRC, by the way.
LPT: If you get an email saying someone has digital evidence of you watching pornography or having sex, and will distribute it to all your contacts unless you pay them bitcoin, put that email right in your junk mail. It’s a scam.
I just got this email today and even knowing it seemed phishy, I couldn’t help but panic. The subject line included my username and a password that I have (stupidly) been using on various unimportant websites since I was a teenager. The email was looong and written using those weird characters spam emails often use, but it was fairly well written grammatically. Essentially, I was told that this person (or human equivalent of decades old pond scum) had managed to gain access to my phone, had recorded me, and unless I paid it $1900 was going to send that recording to all of my contacts on messenger, Facebook, and email. It said I had a certain amount of time to pay up, and that even if I went to the police there was no way the email could be traced. It even went so far as to say there was a specific pixel in the email showing that I had read it. Thankfully my boyfriend was with me and quick to notice it had to be a scam since I don’t even have Facebook. He was immediately able to find an article online to confirm that this “sextortion” scam has been going on for the past couple years. The wording of my own little special delivery of an email was almost verbatim the wording of the email in the article. As someone who has always considered myself fairly savvy to recognizing a scam, I have to say this one really got to me. Even knowing it’s a scam, I still can’t help but feel violated. No one wants to be confronted with the potential that there is some utter creep out there with compromising footage of their private lives, especially in a time when there’s no telling what hackers on the dark web are capable of. I just wanted to share in case any one else here happens to get a similar email. Don’t let them get under your skin, and definitely don’t send them any money. Unfortunately there are a lot of slime balls out there trying to scare money out of us. But the more we stick together and keep each other informed, hopefully we can minimize the number of people they take advantage of.
